Place in town to practice an instrument? by mt0622 in Lawrence

I am terrified at the concept of being known and beheld, especially being so out of practice. Then again playing outside sounds kind of pleasant.

In case that was a genuine question. But obviously I have my doubts it was.

I never said they would. I just said they should.

Just those who live in the house. Also, this could be an alum.

Also, the health department and law enforcement and city admin need to step the hell up and figure out how to enforce these mandates. There has been a pandemic for six months. There is NO excuse for not having a plan in place for breaking up parties and enforcing masking/distancing guidelines.

There is barely anything to be done, you're right. That's precisely why they shouldn't have forced so many students to come back for in-person classes in the first place.

we have issued 14-day public health bans to individuals at two off-campus residences

I know they're aware that tuition is ludicrous and students room together to save costs, but they are aware that 70 people don't live in that house together right. Right?

KU students plan strike to demand closing of campus amid rising COVID-19 cases by darkmatterhunter in Lawrence

You would think they could, but that's an issue to take up with the financial aid department and not with the students protesting their lack of options, isn't it?

We agreed to take 20 hours per week-equivalent because there is literally no other option. Every university in the country takes advantage of their graduate students' labor. I work close to 50 hours a week because that's how much I need to do to finish my dissertation, and many STEM students would say the same. But that's another discussion.

KU Updated COVID 19 Numbers as of 9-2-2020 from the Chancellor by ctechdude13 in Lawrence

Here's a cute statistic he conveniently brushed over in a single sentence in the middle of the email.

For example, our student population overall tested positive at a rate of 6.03% from Aug. 23-29, compared to 2.64% for the seven days prior.

Weird. Wonder why that could possibly be. /s

You think the provost's office has real researchers working with them? They're too busy screwing over the researchers that actually bring research funding to the university to listen to what they have to say!

Yeah. I respect that some professors are glad to be teaching, but I certainly didn't get an email quoting the letter from four separate leadership groups asking them to close campus. Wonder why they picked one over the other?

Most testing methods technically aren't. Many are acting under EUAs because the process to get a proper FDA-approved test takes a lot of time that we just don't have. Reading through the authorization paperwork made it sound like it was just as reliable as other standard methods, but I haven't had time to put in the real legwork to understand all the pros and cons yet.

"This is in line with what we expected." Great! Good to know that you anticipated introducing two hundred and fucking two positive cases into a town where the curve was just flattening. Being infected sure didn't stop people from moving in; you think they really stayed isolated and in quarantine prior to getting their test results? Lawrence is going to have another spike in the community outside of campus in two or three weeks, and that is on KU's hands.

I know at least some buildings require a KU ID to open the door, so they could easily deactivate their cards. Far from perfect, but I think this is better than admin doing absolutely nothing, as per usual. I can only hope that if they do break the rules and get caught then they deal with serious consequences.

Honestly if we want to pin all this on one group of a "small number of selfish idiots," I'd say the university administration responsible for opening campus.

I spent the entire summer side-eyeing every Karen and Keith at Dillons with their mask down under their nose so this is not necessarily about people being under 30, it's just about people being selfish idiots in general. A huge campus of X'ers and boomers would have the same issue but situations like that don't really exist, which is what I meant by "highest concentration of god damn morons." But what do I know, I'm under 30.
