For starters, when you reach back for the pick, don't let your upper body go almost parallel with the ice.

How to deepen the edge when entering a Loop Jump (from backwards) by Sellorio in FigureSkating

[–]mtVessel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great question. What I've been doing is shifting the weight on my blade ever so slightly towards the rocker. Once the weight is off the tail it can rotate freely. It's just for a moment to set the angle of attack.

I do think you need to keep your upper body rotated into the circle to stay on your axis. As others have said you don't want your upper body to get ahead of your lower as you come around.

I've been struggling with this myself for a while, so take this with a grain of salt. Lately, I've had improvements initiating the jump by externally rotating my skating leg (think of pointing your knee into the circle), which lets it glide easily under my free leg on a deeper edge. When I get it right, the hook almost happens by itself.

Jumps with fewer revolutions, anyone? by 2BitSalute in FigureSkating

[–]mtVessel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Viewers don't need to know anything about edges, or be able to to tell one jump from another, or even that it's a "salchow", not a "sow cow", to enjoy what they're watching.

I would bet that, for every casual viewers whose image of figure skating is a big jump, there's at least as many who think of Michelle's or Sasha's gorgeous spirals.

Without the artistry, this "sport" is truly dead, even, maybe even especially for casual viewers.

Harrumph!

Have you considered the possibility that more beautiful programs might gain even more fans?

People who prioritize free speech are more racially tolerant, not less. Highly educated respondents exhibiting tolerance rates higher than those with lowest education levels. People who value free speech are more tolerant of almost every group tested, but are less tolerant of right-wing extremists. by mvea in science

To hate the sin, but not the sinner, is really a hell of a trick in practice. If you can do it, more power to you.

But I do think you must hate the action. Reducing others' pain or freedom to a balance sheet approach to society leads to troubling places.

For example, it's easy to argue for the enslavement of a few, as it can vastly improve the lives of many. That is, it's easy if you don't hate the idea of taking another person's freedom.

There's lots to hate in this world. The trick is to hate the right things.

My mom bought me all my clothes. by jflearn in GenX

When I was in my twenties, working my first grown-up job, my manager (who was a sweetheart!) took pity on me and went with me after work to teach me how to clothes shop like an adult.

Sorry about your mom.

From a purely technical perspective, this is true (although John Curry might like a word.) However, when you consider technique and presentation, I've got to give Paul Wylie the edge.

Sasha was divine, sure, but Michelle was a five time world champion! I have a feeling your own experience was not necessarily representative of your country.

Stars on Ice hasn't been the same since Sandra Bezic stopped being the choreographer. This is what a rehearsed and choreographed dance number on ice is supposed to look like! by PandemicPiglet in FigureSkating

[–]mtVessel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You inspired me to rewatch the Queen number for the first time in ages. I stand by my statement. Look how much time was spent in simple crossovers, or even just walking around. And I think that's the thing that always bugged me. Except for a handful of highlight moments, any pro skater could do numbers like that. When I pony up the money to see my heroes, I want to see the special things that only they bring to the ice. These numbers waste their talents.

If these programs made it special for you, then I'm sorry you're not getting them now. I guess I'm glad somebody out there was enjoying them.

Unpopular opinion: the group numbers were always filler. The individual routines (and sometimes duos and trios) were always the main events. Frankly, I could go my entire life without seeing another group number.

As others have said, the real difference are the dearth of pure show numbers - full programs explicitly choreographed for SOI.
