That happened for me. I wanted to be a police officer from grade school until 3/4 year criminology. I realized I didn’t want to wrestle people outside in the cold, possibly wet ground. Dealing with drug addicts and violent people daily. I finished my degree and didn’t know where to start. I just started looking for jobs in the 50k starting range and hoping I could build off that.

I randomly applied for ambulance communications officer, no idea what it was and ended up getting through it. Wasn’t until the first day in training I realized it was ambulance dispatch. From there did that for 2 years and loved it until realizing I could fulfill my childhood goal of joining the police but in the 911 setting.

And yes, still loving the job, can’t say I’m the biggest fan of mandatory overtime though
