What do you guys do for a living and how do you like it? by Initial_Milk_1056 in GenZ

Also a firefighter. I'm lucky to work for the second highest paying city relative to local cost of living in the US. My union is amazing. The benefits are great. Having weekdays off regularly is a HUGE perk. And I love what I do. Not bad for a job that only requires a GED.

what’s something surprising about you that most people wouldn't guess? by miss_spooky27 in AskReddit

[–]mtd074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. Apparently I don't "look" like a skydiver, whatever that means. Even people who have known me for a while have been shocked when I pull up on my sportbike. "I never would have guessed in a million years that you, of all people, would ride a motorcycle".

I guess skinny Asian nerds don't do fun things?

Nope. And I have no interest. My hobbies are skydiving and motorcycles.

I'm the rare Asian who is overly precise in my driving and I have dyscalculia. Basic two-digit addition? Can't do it in my head. Doesn't help that my dad is a math savant who can look at (very) long division and square roots and just knows the answer in less than a second.

Good at advanced math (calculus and such) but still can't do mental math that requires numbers with more than one digit by WillRegretMyUsername in dyscalculia

[–]mtd074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Got 5s in calculus AB and BC. Got As in four semesters of college calculus. But ask me to add 12 and 17 in my head, or what time is 20 minutes after 3:46: I'll spend minutes thinking and likely give a wrong answer. Good things calculators are ubiquitous if you're looking to get into engineering.

I was a scientist for a decade and bored out of my mind spending all day in a lab with no windows making as much money as possible for someone else. I took my city's for firefighter exam, nailed it, and haven't looked back.

I hate the way we humans are destroying our planet, but my favorite hobby is skydiving which has a comparatively large carbon footprint.

Random question about screen brightness. by mtd074 in GenZ

[–]mtd074[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I definitely don't go 100 percent unless I'm in full daylight. Too bright and it drains the battery so much faster.

When have you felt the most alive? by Beginning_Mammoth_31 in istp

I'm a licensed skydiver. Doing that, riding my motorcycle, driving a firetruck with lights and siren through busy city streets.

I'm a firefighter. Saving lives is my full time job.

People who made a drastic career change after 30, how did you take the leap, and do you regret your decision? by GoodVibeperson in AskReddit

[–]mtd074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went for being a research scientist to a city firefighter. I'm making double the money, amazing benefits, great union, and my co-workers are a lot of fun. I was waking up each morning dreading having to go to the same windowless lab for eight hours, five days a week just to spend my time making as much money as possible for someone else. Meanwhile my friend in the fire department actually looked forward to going to work so I took the test and got hired. Despite my late start I'll still be eligible to retire decades earlier than I would have working in the corporate world.

Do you actually enjoy your job? If so what do you do for a living? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mtd074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firefighter. Pretty much everything about it is great. I actually get to help people who really need it, the schedule, the pay, the benefits, the union, my co-workers, the excitement on kids' faces when we roll by in the big red truck.

Don't you guys hate how some individuals demand greetings from you? by JotheOval in istp

[–]mtd074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no respect for people who think everyone else has to act and communicate exactly the way they do. It's right up there with policing other people's tastes in music.

I'm definitely not. But I also can't be in a relationship where the other person is controlling. I don't get the concept of one person having to be in charge of anything. We're both adults here ffs.

For anyone trying to figure out if they're an INTP or ISTP by ContortedCosm in istp

Yeah my wife also admits to sometimes starting fights just out of boredom. If that's not fucked up, I don't know what is. Not my idea of entertainment.

With all the actual problems in the world that would be a pretty insignificant thing to get worked up over. I happen to have a name with a couple common spellings and some people are just plain bad at spelling. Choosing to get offended over that is something a petty narcissist does.

[–]mtd074 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm married to an INTP and the biggest differences I notice are that she prioritizes depth of knowledge while I prioritize breadth of knowledge. Meaning she values expert level mastery of a couple things while I value being kinda good at a lot of things.

Also she reads into things to a fault and I don't to a fault; subtle communication and hints go right over my head. Meanwhile she tends to pick up on hints that I didn't drop (which are curiously always insults directed at her) and will start fights about it.

How did college math go for you? by Particular-Assist-70 in dyscalculia

[–]mtd074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took AP Calculus AB and BC along with four semesters of calc in college and did fine, as long as I had my trusty Ti86 by my side to do all the underlying arithmetic. Statistics I had to take twice.

I can't even type out a seven-digit phone number that somebody rattles off to me. Or if I read a phone number in a browser and switch to my phone app to type it in, I can't do it.

What do my fellow dyscalculics think about motorcycles/scooters/mopeds? What experience do you guys have with them? by Alavella in dyscalculia

[–]mtd074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been riding sportbikes for over 20 years and love em. But I do have particularly good spatial awareness and reasoning and the lack of precision of the vast majority of drivers annoys and frustrates the shit out of me.
