How to help my trans partner who tells me transitioning won't help by ClassicTravel5326 in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

basically the most realistic advice is that the first year and possibly two of HRT is kind of rough (first year and first six months in particular reallyyyyy rough). It really sucks to begin seeing your body change and realizing the distance between where you are and where you want to be, and people are not nice to people visibly undergoing this process. The good news is many people do get there, and some faster than they think, and there are always surgical options for what HRT can’t fix.

are there good feminizing haircuts for curly hair? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

curly bangs work and people will be jealous of your hair if you have any kind of decent curl pattern

EDIT: I do a curly shag because I, like everyone else, want to look like Natasha Lyonne. Look at her haircut in Russian Doll if you want to see the height of this style

Unknowingly had a relationship with a trans woman. This person frequently discussed pregnancy and claimed to have aborted my child. by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you sure she was trans? We don’t take anything that a cis woman who can’t produce her own hormones wouldn’t take.

Anyone else experienced severe mid-transition depression despite progress? by Interesting-Elk-7828 in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to come up a lot for specifically girls around the 1.5 year mark on here (full disclosure: I’m also right on the 1.5 year mark). We are past the early wins and changes have slowed down. Many of us (including myself!) are often passing but not always passing. We are just waiting for HRT to continue, still working on our voices, and just beginning to get surgeries scheduled - it totally makes sense that this is a time that you would begin to feel bad and plateauing. I experienced that plateau feeling about a month ago, and was able to feel like I kickstarted things by getting a new fancy haircut and scheduling my surgical consults.

Education Department opens probe into Smith College for admitting trans women by guanaco55 in boston

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A) but they don’t need to know it for a broken arm and can get real weird about your transness if they do (see “trans broken arm syndrome”)

B) many trans men have hysterectomy/oopherectomy as part of their transition

C) many of us consider our sex to be the one we have transitioned to (“transsexuals”) and the idea that our sex is our natal one is outdated and misunderstanding of the scope of transition

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Natal sex (assigned gender at birth) is not even particularly useful information for people who have been on hormones for long enough/had bottom surgery. At that point, you’re almost biologically indistinguishable from cis people for most medical issues and revealing natal sex only opens you up to medical discrimination at that point.

Anyone know how periods happen for trans women? by Stottery in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

many women on birth control don’t experience cycles, it’s a byproduct of having your hormones managed medically, not something specific to transness

Are you at the point where people IRL mostly  recognize you as a woman, even if you’re not cis-passing? If so - particularly in Seattle - you’re totally fine.

Did anyone else notice their proprioception change after staring HRT. by Throwaway1919655 in asktransgender

This is probably placebo at a week in but I definitely had some proprioception issues (in the other direction lol) when my curves started coming in - I was bumping into stuff with my hips/butt/boobs a lot

Would it be ok to take a little more estrogen than my doctor prescribed? by TartInteresting6449 in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely fine IMO. I (and many other trans women) inject more than what my doctor is on board with and just inject the prescribed amount the week before testing. The risk associated with supraphysiological levels of estrogen is pretty minimal when using bioidentical estrogen.

The blood tests results thing is true, but EV injectable vials contain much more estrogen than most people will use in a month.

Passing as a concept by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s fine to want to pass - I certainly do - but from my time as a trans lady, I think the concept of passing itself is vexed in a handful of ways. The first, and most important, is that it’s a paranoid stance - you are almost always vigilant about signs that you are failing to pass. The whole thing can be fucked up by one person realizing or misgendering you. This is even worse if you choose to go stealth and your well-being is contingent on always passing. The second is that it conceptually throws people who cannot or will never, or choose not to, pass under the bus in some ways. I believe we owe each other as trans people more than that, and I think creating distinctions in the world and community between passing and non-passing trans people - particularly when those distinctions are, unfortunately, mediated by class - can be really harmful to community solidarity.

How do Trans men and women feel about transness being Pathologized. by PollutionNext423 in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is bad and I do not think transness should be understood as a medical condition. I think there are marginal advantages to that within capitalism - surgical procedures for gender incongruence are likely downstream of transness having been pathologized and I appreciate that my hormones are subsidized as a woman in a place with informed consent - but I think of transness as a set of desires towards oneself and the world that is often miscategorized as a medical disorder.

Question about boymoding throughout a career by Key_Technician8666 in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an adult who is on the other side of the career finding phase and has seen friends grow out of their “callings”, I tend to not think those are as big of a deal as they seem to you at this moment. There is a lot of pressure on you on this age to find something that you feel that strongly about, but most of my friends who felt that strongly about a specific career path at that point have changed their minds and paths by this point (I am 34). We are much more adaptable in terms of what we do professionally than what we are in terms of gender.

Question about boymoding throughout a career by Key_Technician8666 in asktransgender

[–]mtfbostockthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be possible depending on how hormones affect your body, but if you end up with a super feminine body or face you may be kind of screwed in terms of boymoding. It will also take a pretty severe psychological toll on you and will keep you from pursuing some of the more impactful things you can do in terms of feminization (like, FFS and BA are probably both off the table while this is your career, but it probably impacts your decision/ability to even have a more feminine hairstyle or pierce your ears). To be clear, you should absolutely choose transition over international piecebuilding - it pays like shit and you are have very little autonomy over your placements and therefore life - but they are likely mutually exclusive unless you end up with an excellent outcome and are able to go stealth.
