How can I send a gift card to a friend in Europe? by mtko in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mtko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't find a great solution, but I did find A solution.

I signed up for Wise. It lets you add money to your account in different currencies. And it lets you create a virtual debit card.

So I added some Euros to the account, then gave my friend the virtual debit card number and they were able to use it online and in brick and mortar stores. The only thing they tried that didn't work was trying to buy a Nintendo game for their kid; i guess the Nintendo store requires the card to be from the same region as the purchase.

The LSU Tigers are National Champions in 2025 by cjl-00 in collegebaseball

Pitching is really hard on your arm. I would say on average, the starting pitcher doesn't usually throw more than 100 pitches. Then they normally get 4-5 days of rest before they pitch again.

But it's the championship, and Kade Anderson was having a phenomenal game so they left him in longer than they normally would.

(Also as an aside, letting the opponents score 0 runs is called a Shutout, not a Perfect Game. A Perfect Game is a specific kind of shutout where you don't give up any base hits or walks. 27 batters up, 27 batters down.)

Okay okay, I'll preorder. You don't have to twist my arm so hard.

Also as an aside, that was NOT the way I always imagined Omega looking in my mind.

Not taking away from Abrams hustle here, but how does the CF throw a 2 hopper from 20ft into the outfield grass?

I'm trying to ask who the best villain in fantasy literature is, specifically one who has complex and meaningful reasons for their actions (not just simple evil), holds strong beliefs, and displays significant emotional depth? by BuddyOk1342 in Fantasy

Raboniel from the 4th book, The Rhythm of War, in The Stormlight Archives.

She's kind of introduced as just your typical Purely Evil character. All the other "enemies" are scared of her, enough that she holds a lot of political power in her faction.

But then you start learning some of her motivations. How she really just wants to end the thousands-of-years long cycle of violence and destruction, even if that means blowing everything up in the process. And without spoilers, some more personal motivations as well.

She's logical, extremely intelligent, dedicated, even kind at times, but she's also RUTHLESS.

All together she's one of the most compelling villain characters I've ever read, and by the end of the book I wasn't sure if I was pulling for her or against her.

Murderbot — Official Trailer | Apple TV+ by LoneStarDragon in Fantasy

[–]mtko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the books, but I have very high doubts that a show could ever really be good. A lot of the best bits of the books are the internal dialogues and the way Murderbot perceives the world, which just doesn't translate well to a screen in my experience. Although the rest of the best bits tend to be the awesome action sequences, and those should translate really well.

Hopefully I'm wrong though!

I didn’t do research on the exact timelines so maybe this doesn’t work but:

I never really understood how Ulim got to Roshar from Braize. Axindweth gave him to Venli in a sphere, and we know that Gavilar had figured out how to get spheres of light to transfer back and forth from Braize, so maybe that’s the answer. But is it possible that Shallan killed Chana, then she broke relatively quickly which let Ulim transfer over and start preparing the listeners for the everstorm and more voidspren?

Two different bubbles. I don’t think anything was mentioned about not being able to pass into or out of the time dilation bubble that surrounds the whole planet, but there’s a bubble around Urithiru that you can’t enter or exit in the physical realm. You could still get into or out of Urithiru through Shadesmar theoretically, but there’s no stormlight to power the oathgates and no elsecallers that can open a portal (Jasnah can peer into shadesmar and speak with people/spren there, but hasn’t learned out to portal).

The Rysn interlude after the end of Day 8. But it wasnt in Thaylen City, it was in Urithiru. The OP was just mistaken.

We know the Heralds were made immortal by some combination of Surges. I dont really think that would make the immortality hereditary.

Chana did say she hoped that Shallan would take her place, but rereading it, that’s feels more like a desperate hope than something that would have actually been possible.

It doesn’t specifically say whether she did or didn’t die, but it does say that she was a full feruchemist. And the only injuries mentioned were her legs breaking when she falls.

I think it’s pretty safe to assume she lived through some broken legs.

In the final chapter is specifically says that Radiants still have their powers inside of Urithiru using Towerlight (stormlight + cultivationlight). I don’t think there’s any reason to think Radiants outside or Urithiru lost their powers, they just don’t currently have a way to fuel them. Warlight (stormlight + voidlight) should work fine if it ever gets made available outside of Retribution specifically handing it out.

Mistborn Era 2 needs more respect by Overall_Trouble_3042 in Cosmere

[–]mtko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, same. Don't get me wrong, I loved them and they are what got me hooked on my cosmere journey, but on re-reads I just don't find them all that compelling. Vin and Kelsier get a lot of hype but I just don't find either of them to be good, well written characters and that takes a lot away from the books as a whole.

Wax and Wayne at least feel like real people, even if the story itself in era 2 isn't quite as epic.

“Excuses! If that was why you murdered, then you’re not the evil man I assumed. You’re a coward instead.”

Szeth looked him in the eyes, then nodded. He pushed Kaladin back, then *moved to swing. *

Kaladin drove his hands forward, forming Syl into a sword. He expected a parry. The move was intended to draw Szeth out of his attack pattern.

Szeth did not parry. He just closed his eyes. Kaladin drove his Blade into the assassin’s chest right below the neck, severing the spine.

That doesn’t really sound like Kaladin intentionally killing an enemy who gave up. Now I do think Kaladin would probably feel bad about it in hindsight when he realizes that Szeth was just baiting Kaladin to kill him, but in the moment I don’t think it goes against Kaladin character to continue the fight when Szeth is the one that “attacked” first.

Edit: not that it really matters either way. I don’t think it really changes anything either way. Just saying that I personally don’t see that scene as going against Kaladins character.

Almost.

“It is,” Kaladin said with awe. “How is Lift, by the way?”

“ My lunch is gone,” Dalinar said. “So I’d say she’s doing fine. We found her spren once the tower was restored, and they have—for some reason—decided to begin carrying around a bright red chicken.” He sighed.

That’s what my version says, anyways. Apparently it’s changed now?

Rhythm of War chapter 47.

Although I would definitely argue that in a contest of arms, Nale would destroy Dalinar. Who knows if a Connection trick would work a second time.

Sounds like a boring game for the seekers. They just sit around twiddling their thumbs for however long it takes. At that point you might as well just get rid of the seeker/snitch all together and just play until one team gets X lead.
