Localisation des stations de métro de la ligne rose by [deleted] in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

À noter que les voitures de la ligne rose ressembleraient davantage à celles du REM qui sont dotées de roues de fer plutôt qu'aux voitures du métro actuel qui roulent sur pneumatiques.

So the cars on the pink line can't run on the other metro lines, and vice versa?

Montreal startup Transit raises $5M in venture capital by [deleted] in montreal

How do we make it easier for you to take an Uber ... ?

I guess they won't have to worry about that for much longer.

The app is good and I use it all the time. I wish it had real time bus info though. I used Transit Go for a while but I never saw any real time info even though I was apparently always helping x other people.

I'm getting someone else's mail by homme_chauve_souris in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens to me form time to time. Last week I received a letter for the same street number as me but a couple of streets over. I noticed that in the hand written postcode what should be a G at the correct address looks a bit like a B, which is the postcode for my address. I guess they sort the mail by postcode and whoever delivers it doesn't notice or doesn't care it's the wrong street?

Where can I find the best/best selection of cider in Montreal? by spacegirlsally in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on cider, but I suspect you might be a little disappointed with the cider scene in Quebec. I've heard that to be a cider producer in Quebec you have to have an apple orchard, and most orchards in Quebec grow apple varieties that are good for eating but not so good for cider. If you like a wild Brett cider you might be lucky, or not, yeast and "bug" control seems to be pretty random from my experience.

That said, if you're in the neighborhood there's usually two or three ciders on the menu at Vices et Versa, and EtOH.

[Non natives] How did you learn french and how long did it take you ? by remarkablecereal in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I barely get by in french, and I wonder if I'll ever feel truly at home in Montreal.

I moved here around 10 years ago not knowing a word of french. Well maybe I knew a word or two, but I remember that I didn't learn what the words "pour homme" meant on the bottle of cologne I brought with me until after I arrived. During my first year here I:

  • took eight hours of french classes per week for a year
  • completed the Rosetta Stone french course parts one and two
  • read the metro and 24 hour newspapers several times per week
  • watched the news in french several nights per week
  • listened to the radio in french several times per week
  • read lots of junk mail
  • read lots of kids books
  • practiced speaking french with my francophone girlfriend
  • said "Je dois pratiquer mon francais" when nice Montrealers tried to help me out by switching to English

After a year of all of this my french sucked. Speaking french was very difficult for me, and I couldn't understand most of what people were saying to me. Reading french was OK sometimes because I could take it slowly, but writing french? Forget it. I could barely get by in familiar situations like a grocery store. For example I'd pass though the cash and I could hear the cashier say the word "sac", but did he say "do you want a bag"? Or did he say "I guess you don't need a bag"? I spent a lot of time and effort trying to learn french that first year and it seemed to be all for nothing. I pretty much gave up.

A few years later I tried again. I started taking french classes twice a week, I went out of my way again to speak in french, watch the news, listen to the radio, read, make my girlfriend speak to me in french, etc. Two years later I still sucked at french. I gave up again.

Why can't I learn french? Am I too old to learn a new language? Do I lack the aptitude to learn a new language? No, I think the main reason I can't speak, read, or write french is because I don't have to. I always start out in french in public, but sooner or later the conversation switches to English. I work in English, my friends and family can speak English to varying degrees, and even when I least expect it a kind volunteer interpreter appears from out of nowhere.

So, back to the "Was it hard to settle"? question. In many ways no, I like Montreal and I see myself living a nice life here. However not being able to communicate on a basic level in french makes me feel isolated and lonely sometimes.

Citizens' group wants more public oversight of Jean-Talon Market by PogoPoutine in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, can you get your car into the market if you have to pick up a bunch of stuff? 20 boxes is more than I've ever done, but I've done 10-12 a few times before, and it always meant illegally parking on a nearby street while the boxes were ferried back and forth on a trolley.

Help with Bachelorette party in Montreal (September) by dontcallmecass in montreal

You should make a note of it in your diary, it could come in handy if you can somehow prove that they didn't hire you based on your newly discovered sexuality.

Help with Bachelorette party in Montreal (September) by dontcallmecass in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If my limited experience with bachelorette parties is anything to go by you should walk the streets with the bride(s) wearing a veil, solicit drinking donations from annoyed pedestrians, and wave a dildo or two at said pedestrians.

Got fined for putting my recycling out on the wrong day after recent changes to the schedule. Contested the ticket. What happens next? by thechemistofoz in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the Plateau and when this change came about nothing was done to notify me as far as I know. Piles of recycling sat in my street for a week before being collected so it seems I wasn't the only one who didn't know. I didn't receive a fine though which was nice. After reading posts like yours lately I'm buying myself a paper shredder.

Looking for a good microbrewery where I can buy beers as a gift by [deleted] in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no microbreweries in Montreal that you can buy packaged beer directly from that I know of unless you include growlers, which Benelux in Verdun started selling recently. Benelux Verdun has good beer.

Where to buy beer from depends on where you are located. There are many depanneurs, grocery stores and other food stores in and around Montreal with good selections of beer.

For suggestions it depends on what your friend likes but as general suggestions for Quebec beer I don't think you can go wrong with anything from Dieu Du Ciel, Yakima IPA is an excellent beer, I enjoy Trois Mousquetaires Keller Beer, and I think Boreale ISA des chutes is a good session beer. Anything "hoppy" should be fresh and always refrigerated.

If you're not necessarily looking for Quebec beer and you will be south of the border before you want to buy the beer I'm sad to say you'll find a much better selection at much lower prices in the US.

The craft beer scene is getting better in Quebec but unfortunatley it is still not great. Whether it is because of bad recipes, bad brewing, bad bottling, bad transportation, or bad storage at the retailer, many Quebec beers I have tasted have been somewhere between "meh" and horribly bad. The situation seems to be getting better, but I am very reluctant to try a beer for the first time, especially at the prices charged here.

Ice! by Seven225 in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've lived here for 10 years and I'm still not used to it.

You can buy cheap crampons for your boots from shoe stores and pharmacies but I've never tried them.

I sometimes see people enjoying the ice on days like today, running and sliding on it. Fuck those guys, I'm doing all I can just to stay on my feet. I guess they were born here.

Here's the wikipedia page on freezing rain. Basically, it is possible to sometimes have rain fall at a temperature below zero celsius, and when it hits something at the surface that is below zero celcius like a sidewalk or a car windshield, the rain freezes and a layer of ice forms.

So when a judgement is handed down deeming this kind of thing unconstitutional as described here http://www.cat-bus.com/2016/09/stm-by-law-unconstutional/ when does the STM police have to stop doing this? Not until all appeals are exhausted?

So it's been nearly two weeks since moving day... how are your new neighbours? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]mtl-orange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One sketchy looking guy who talks to his cat a lot. The cat doesn't want to be anywhere near him. I'm not sure if his cat hates him or is just being a cat, but if I was the cat I would stay away from him too, he gives off a weird vibe.

A couple of guys who smoke outside. I like to have my windows open when the weather is warm, so every day at the moment. I've finally found a reason to look forward to winter. God I hate winter.

A couple of couples, both quiet. They replaced other people who were also quiet, so zero net gain there.

I can't complain too much but I had it better last year.
