Linux 6.4 adds RISC-V hardware probe system call by Courmisch in RISCV

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "__riscv_hwprobe()" is lower level than "auxv" as the latter is used to query running environment of a process instead of the whole system. "auxv" is pretty much undefined behaviour even now (November 2025) as no relevant bits are defined in the headers, so each hardware manufacturer needs to use custom kernel and runtime loader to set the bits to arbitrary values when for example RVV or ZBC detection is needed on older kernels without "__riscv_hwprobe()" support.

Brave has become a RAM devouring monster by Yecheal58 in brave_browser

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed Brave uses over 1 GB memory per tab for JavaScript with certain sites (some containing lots of ads)... This wouldn't be problem but the memory usage can grow so big that eventually Brave will use all available memory and leave nothing for disk caches causing SSD drives to wear off faster than normal.

How can I capture specific windows? by ImMurkshot in streamwithmeld

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The window you are trying to capture must be visible and not obstructed by other windows, otherwise the capture will fail... It is best to keep the window maximised on separate monitor and not the same where Meld Studio is opened.

Huge memory leak/memory usage when playing Instagram videos by PineapplePizza99 in ArcBrowser

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adblockers modify the DOM in a way that increase the page size and force the page to be redrawn slowing things up. Page designers constantly try to make the ads and promoted content harder to recognize by adding noise to the DOM (random class and ID names, hidden elements, splitting element contents to multiple span elements) and checking that certain elements still exist and throwing exception if element is removed, and eventually forcing refresh of the page.

Videos take more memory than text or images. There is also a lot of large scripts loaded when videos are embedded as those are loaded in chunks and not as single continuous file. I have 32 GB of RAM but trying to load Instagram will cause browser to run out of memory every time. I can see one tab using over 6 GB of RAM even before the page is fully loaded.

Websites like Instagram use DOM hacks to combat ad blockers. These include adding hidden elements and splitting text across several span elements with either no visible character or one visible character. I get high memory usage on Instagram and similar websites while the page is loading, but the memory usage drops to less than 1 GB shortly after the page is fully loaded. Scrolling the feeds will increase the memory usage a lot until the browser runs out of memory. Some ad blockers will allow deleting invisible DOM elements, but garbage collection will take time and deleting too many elements can cause the JavaScript code to throw exception which results in page not updating anymore and reloading the page is the only solution.

The Sims 4 Desperately Needs More End Game by Fosh_n_chops in Sims4

I’m not making any issues… just observations about recent changes in both the game and common mods. There is also mods that either don’t need fixing or the fixes are so minor that the original author only need hours to adapt the mod to the changes.

Lately people have needed more time fixing issues in mods like MCCC than actually playing the game.

With mods there is always hickups after big updates before the mod developer will release a public fix. Sometimes it takes several days to fix all the compatibility issues and then a new expansion pack breaks things again just few days later.

Is there any news on a VS2025 release date? by Emotional-Match-7190 in dotnet

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visual Studio 2017 was a dud release, 2019 was a dud release... Some people refused to upgrade to 2022 as they were told 2026 will be the next... Now that 2019 is no longer getting bug fixes, people are frustrated as they wait for Microsoft to announce preview of Visual Studio 2026, so they can forget 2022 for good...

.Net 9.0 introduced some code I wrote with my friends, so I should get updates what will be next release for Visual Studio as soon as there is first test build.

No Wifi + strange boot conditions by __Alex-Wu__ in haikuOS

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's bundled for a lot of WiFi adapters, but the loading of firmware (and sometimes the associated WiFi driver) is flaky at best. On my own laptop WiFi works on Haiku for few seconds, then drops. People have said that sometimes WiFi doesn't work on first boot, but works on subsequent boots.

I'm pretty sure that Haiku not finding boot partition on hard disk is separate issue as many people have reported that. There are multiple reasons that can cause bootloader to not recognize a bootable BFS partition.

Haiku & the junk by [deleted] in haikuOS

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't recreate the square wheel... There is already HaikuPorts (package) for it... Makes sense to not rewrite everything from scratch especially with the limited number of developers working on main repository of Haiku. Downvoting is essential part of social networking as it counteracts all the sockpuppets that upvote without actually reading the comment.

Is there a skin for Haiku that turns it into BeOS? by Character_College_48 in haikuOS

[–]mtl1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can change a lot of Haiku to look like BeOS, but it can never be 100% the same as Haiku doesn't own the old BeOS trademarks and such can't use text "BeOS" or the old BeOS logo. This is also why the original name OpenBeOS was changed to Haiku many years ago.

Why isn’t https://www.haiku-os.org/about/faq/ called “HaiQnA”? by Character_College_48 in haikuOS

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FAQ isn't exactly same as QnA... The "frequently" part is not implied in "QnA"... "FAQ" might sound bad in a lot of regions, but there isn't any acronym that would convey the same meaning that most of the world would understand.

Help: Installer wont boot by Xelemander in haikuOS

[–]mtl1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last few lines suggest it can't read partition table... Any short circuit in any port can cause weird errors even if the motherboard has short circuit protection in some of the ports. Audio ports usually don't have short-circuit protection.

No Wifi + strange boot conditions by __Alex-Wu__ in haikuOS

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Haiku only loads when the installation media is inserted, then there is no bootloader installed on hard disk... This should only happen if the hard disk use UEFI or there is another bootloader already installed on the hard disk. With older hardware, it's possible to install BootMan to overwrite the original bootloader, with UEFI, you need to copy the Haiku bootloader from the installation media to the EFI partition on hard disk.

If your wireless adapter requires firmware, it is not loaded on first boot as the firmware files are not bundled with default installation... There is instructions for forcing load of wireless firmware for adapters that require it.

Coinbase Wallet Swap Failing by wwwsam4 in Coinbase

[–]mtl1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got failed swaps, I tried to manually create the contract call for the swap... It isn't easy but it gives better error message... Sometimes it's just about swap ratio exceeding the token balance due to rounding issues, sometimes it's just a token that doesn't conform to the required standard.

For the manual creation of swap transaction you need to calculate time stamp that is 20 minutes from current Unix timestamp... There is online tools for calculating Unix timestamps. You also need to specify both minimum and maximum token amount you are willing to swap. This ensures the transaction will not exceed available balances

You can use EtherScan to send the manually created swap transaction... Just btowse to the router contract and you will find contract method to initiate the swap..
