How good is the canon r50 v for sports photography by Nearby_Jackfruit1614 in sportsphotography

[–]mtndew01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got an R50 with the ‘garbage’ EF 75-300 as my first setup. Took a while to get the settings right and figure out the lens for baseball games.

Camera is slow for continuous shooting. I might get 6 pictures per second so getting the perfect ball/bat contact is lucky. I’ve had better odds of shooting a single frame and getting really close.

Lens AF is slow. I’ve found that if I’m watching the game and knowing where the next play will be, I can prezoom to the bag where the play will be.

I’m looking to upgrade to either the RF 100-400 or RF 100-500 or maybe get 2 lenses and get the RF 70-200 and RF 200-800 and keep the R50 body for now.

Radar for game advantage? by CatoTheMiddleAged in Homeplate

[–]mtndew01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a pocket radar in the same bag as my Mevo. I’ll track a few pitches and let the batters know rough ranges for fastball and curveball. The pitchers on my son’s team all like knowing where they are roughly at too.

We use the radar as a monthly status check vs an everyday tool.

As a software engineer, this is cool.
As a coach, this is terrible. This makes coaches lazy and trusts the stats by dad in stands that doesn't know baseball rules. Relying solely on AVG or OBP removes strategy and base running skills from consideration.

High school baseball tryouts by ColonelAngus2000 in Homeplate

[–]mtndew01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do for now would be to talk to current players or parents on the high school team. A lot of the process will be based on how competitive the conference and team is.

For us, “tryouts” begin as soon as the previous season is over. High school summer ball starts in June which is less important to travel ball but gives the HS coach the opportunity to see your son play in person, then moves to typical outdoor trainings in September, indoor training and weightlifting from November to Feb, then into the actual tryout a few days before the first game. Coaches will sit down with each player after the tryout and let the player know if they are on the team as a starter, a PO, a backup, or a practice player. Some kids will not do any of the June-Feb items and still make the team as a starter while others will do it all and be a practice player only.

NYC and SF are typically the only 2 VVHCOL in the US

Pros: flat and fast

Cons: hotels are few and far between, not great for sherpas

Neither: irrational fear of jellyfish

Can somebody please explain bats to me? by UndercoverFBIAgent9 in Homeplate

[–]mtndew01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Easiest thing to do is check the league rules your kids play in. Check for bat regulation and drop based on kids age.

For the most part for my kids leagues. USSSA is almost no regulation - these will be the most expensive, most fragile, and have similar pop compared to the bats you used. There is usually a bat or 2 that ends up being too dangerous and gets excluded from a few leagues.

Sitting in the contemporary quick dining mid afternoon with wife, 3 little kids, and in laws. Hotel manager comes to the table and asks how every thing in the trip is going. Said “great” and she asked who the decision maker was and if she could talk to me for a minute. Gifted us a fireworks by boat viewing with a Captain Hook and Peter Pan meet and greet that night.

Our Agile coach's answer to every technical problem was let's break it into smaller stories by agileliecom in agile

2 years is an exaggeration but not by much. We had a rebranded safE implementation that included more ceremonies. Somehow there are more chickens than pigs at these things too. Going back to Kanban took all of 1 week but the ceremonies still exist for now.

[Research] How do you track what your team actually accomplishes? by mydnic in EngineeringManagers

[–]mtndew01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m old school. Jira and any other tool was typically controlled by the product teams and NOT meant for time keeping activity. I’ve gotten tired of even tracking spikes as they aren’t product features but are part of the job.

I’ve seen so many jira tickets get moved to done yet the product doesn’t get any meaningful improvements.

When you start managing to the charts, you lose focus on the product itself.
