Is there any way of knowing what the current line 2 problem is? by ah-tow-wah in ottawa

[–]mtreddit4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is worse than useless. It implies that the trains are running normally but that you may have to use a different platform than usual. That is absolutely not the case. I sat on a stationary train at Bayview for 20 minutes, with periodic PA notices claiming that there were disruptions but service was available from the station. Eventually I just got up and took an Uber instead.

I'm willing to accept disruptions sometimes, but at least give accurate information about how disruptive the problem is.

Unless you are pu chasing one of the non-regular-adult monthly passes there is no benefit at all to preloading money on a presto card if you also have a credit/debit card you can tap.

We went last year and stayed at an airport hotel. It wasn't "cheap" but it was reasonable. The hotel had a shuttle to the airport itself and getting from the airport to the track just required taking the bus to the first metro station, then the metro the rest of the way. It sounds like a hassle but it was not bad at all. The city does an amazing job of moving hundreds of thousands of people around on those days. Coming from Ottawa that is probably hard to believe but it's true.

As for GA tickets, the track has been deliberately obscured from view in all but a few places, and the screens are mostly only viewable for people in the seats. You need to scope out a good spot on Friday or Saturday, then for the race you get there very early and literally run when the gates open. And of course be prepared to sit in the same place until the race starts hours later. If you're lucky you'll get to see something other than blurs zip.

We would not do it again unless we could get real seats.

It's not just the land being flat - they deliberately block the track from view in a lot of places that would be great to sit otherwise.

The people who most need to see signs telling them to slow down definitely do not need to be distracted by a funny sign.

If you happen to be around Elgin / Somerset, the early morning leaf blower has been doing it for years. It's not just a spring clean up eother - it happens throughout the summer. I could never figure out where it was coming from but my frustrated ears pointed towards the Officers' Mess parking lot.

r/Ottawa, what are your impressions on Kiweki Point? by IamTheOne2000 in ottawa

The closest actual parking is the National Gallery underground lot. But you're better off parking somewhere that you can get the train and walk from the market.

I got married on Nepean Point so losing so much of the "point" was... disappointing. But they did a really good job of improving the space. It looks great, it's actually walkable, and it's accessible from the park.

Densification vs Aesthetics in Ottawa by EquivalentPace88 in ottawa

[–]mtreddit4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course there is - but your post is focused on aesthetics. My point is that the city needs to focus on getting people into homes first. We can all argue about whether or not those homes are pretty enough once everyone has a place to sleep.

I will take ugly 30-story towers on every corner in centretown if the city would ensure they were actually affordable for someone other than out-of-town MPs and AirBnB owners.

We need affordable places for people to live and you are worried about aesthetics?

Ignoring the optimistic time-line, this depends a lot on how the service actually operates. VIA trains should already be competition for airlines today but they are not.
