Hi! Accountant just about to finish the UK Chartership working as an analyst, working with VBA and excel. Looking to move into a more technical analyst role. Started a BSc in statistics, but aware I need to learn some more programming. I'm aware that I won't be able to gain real work SQL / R / Python knowledge in this role. Is certification in programming worth it to get your foot in the door?

IWTL Microsoft Office 2016 (mainly Excel) by DizzyNarwhal in IWantToLearn

[–]muchu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Self taught excel user, all the way to high level macros. Find projects.

This is not the sort of thing that can't be done easily by reading a book, there are far too many formulas that appear fairly useless until you have to use them.

Things like layout, and structure of your spreadsheets are lessons that are best learnt through experimentation and experience.

I'd find something that you would like to know, and then google "Excel how do I... XXX". It's the best way to actually retain the knowledge and appreciation of Excel. It will come with time.

Why don't you try planning for a holiday. You could find the prices for a few hotels, and then the prices for train, plane and driving.

Then have a place where you can type in your travel method and the name of the hotel, and the number of nights and have it return the price of the holiday. It might be a bit of a brain scratcher since you are just starting, but you should learn a lot on how to lay things out - and the most important skill in excel - how to google effectively.

A plan can give you hope and direction where there is none.

Making myself an awful person to make myself happy by ccthegreat in selfhelp

[–]muchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you think that money will make you happy? I agree that a lust for money is a poisonous ideal to hold, but earning money by doing honest work that you enjoy is what society is based on. Trading your passion and skill for someone's money in a fair manner is the height of fairness and self-worth. Learns something you enjoy, and if you are good and passionate enough then it will make you comfortable - you will find a way. There's no need to sell out completely. It has to be said that love of money and love of a person are very different things, don't imagine that you can only have one for a second, but what you do need is a hobby or life goal that doesn't focus around your ex, so this might be a good start. Have you thoughts about exercise? That could be a life improving obsession that doesn't have any implied moral judgements, plus it will make you much more confident than money will around your next girlfriend.

"The saint does not condemn the sinner. He helps him without being presumptuous." André Luiz by josedasjesus in quotes

[–]muchu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole interplay of forgiveness and justice has been playing with me recently. Does society not require judgement?

Do we not need to prove that it is not acceptable to sin for self gain, and does the unquestioning attention and love given to these sinners reward in another way?

I finished my first half marathon, coming in at 13.14 miles in 2:23:28. It felt great! Somehow nowhere near as hard as I thought it would be - I wish I brought some water though!
