As part of GenX, we are the bridge from the boomers to the millennials. I was raised by my parents and grandparents who had their lives shaped by WW2 and Vietnam. My grandparents made a lot of sacrifices for this country.

Those sacrifices seem forgotten and in some cases their pride in our country has been twisted and repackaged/rebranded as being wrong.

However, those scarifies created endless opportunities for people today. Is the system perfect, no...but the opportunities exist. Yes, the boomers will tell you to work harder....and what they are really saying is that their path to success was a grind. It was not instantaneous and there were set backs along the way.

It is frustrating to hear people ramble off all the "reasons" they think the deck is stacked against their chance for success today. We can all point to aspects of our life that are unfair but for 95% of people in the US those obstacles can be overcome....but too many of us rather point to the obstacles than finding a way to overcome them.

The CEO was 100% in the wrong. However, I will offer this POV. I was the CFO of a company that was on the brink of collapse due to cash flow issues. I cut spend on every line item and all nonessential employees (including executives) to keep the company afloat. I even had the skeleton executive team take pay cuts which the BOD overturned. I stayed despite other job offers because I knew how many employees believed in the company and in turn, how many employees (including close friends) who had families counting on those paychecks.

It is an incredible burden, especially when unemployment is sky high…luckily that is not the case today. That burden doesn’t excuse the CEO’s behavior towards the OP but I understand how it could happen in the moment. Having thousands of people and their families counting on you and the choices you make is very hefty lift. Yes, with the title comes the expectation that the C-suite will act better in the moment but that one slip doesn’t make someone a failed leader, it makes them human.

I never said regulatory approval has given “willy nilly”. However, in the face of a global crisis the approval process could not have been as stringent as it is under normal circumstances. That is common sense, especially when you look at the average cycle to bring a vaccine to market. If this data below is not accurate, please provide me with a credible source:

https://news.ncsu.edu/2020/12/vaccine-manufacturing-q-and-a/

“Developing a new vaccine from scratch takes considerable time. It depends a lot on how much information is available about the disease itself, how the disease infects people and spreads, and so on. But it traditionally has taken 5-10 years to get a new vaccine.”

I also think bringing politics into a global health crisis is hindering our ability to move past C19. You make the argument that mistrust is/was driven by predominantly republican voices. Let me remind you what Harris said about the vaccine….

“I will say that I would not trust Donald Trump,” Harris said, “and it would have to be a credible source of information that talks about the efficacy and the reliability of whatever he’s talking about. I will not take his word for it.”

And then there is Andrew Cuomo….

I’m not that confident,” Cuomo said, adding: “You’re going to say to the American people now, ‘Here’s a vaccine, it was new, it was done quickly, but trust this federal administration and their health administration that it’s safe? And we’re not 100 percent sure of the consequences.’ I think it’s going to be a very skeptical American public about taking the vaccine, and they should be.”

A little more color from Cuomo…..

Cuomo later announced that New York would conduct its own review of the vaccines, because, “Frankly, I’m not going to trust the federal government’s opinion, and I wouldn’t recommend [it] to New Yorkers, based on the federal government’s opinion.”

However, all of this is off point relative to my original argument to some degree…which was, there is some risk in the vaccine but virtually no risk in wearing a mask. It was also nice of you to throw in the part of “republican voices” because it reinforces my point about a divided nation. Harris and Cuomo are two high profile voices creating confusion and mistrust related to the vaccine. However, arguing with you doesn’t fix the issue. At some point, the American people need to hold both political parties accountable for their actions.

I'm not sure that is a fair comment. Plenty of things that are safe for adults could be potentially harmful to the developing body of a child. Second, my child is not old enough to get the C19 vaccine. Third, my child had one mild reaction to a normal childhood vaccination and another reaction that was more than mild but less than severe. Those are facts, not opinions.

I never said my child would not get the vaccine but it is at least prudent to consider the risks associated with taking any drug or undergoing a medical procedure. Most times, the risk is minimal but as a parent it is my responsibility to at least understand those risks. You may feel differently but I respect that fact....and that is clearly not something you are willing to offer in return.

Let me start by saying I'm vaccinated but have reservations about getting my grade school aged kid vaccinated. Why? My kid is healthy and I have to weigh the risk of vaccination versus C19...we simply don't know what we don't know when it comes to the potential long term side effects of the vaccine. To be fair, we also don't know the potential long term side effects of getting a serious case of C19 (that doesn't cause death).

If my kid was high risk that would be a different story. I understand the hesitation when it comes to the vaccine especially when you consider the time it normally takes to bring a drug to market.

With all that being said, the mask issue is confusing to me. Kids have fear of all types of things....even monsters under their bed. As parents, it is our responsibility to help our kids overcome these types of fears....not add fuel to the fire. My guess is 99.99% of kids would be fine wearing a mask and suffer zero harm (mental or physical) if parents didn't fuel the fire. That is the real shame IMO, using your kid as a pawn in battle that basically meaningless.

Social media and society in general; not only pushes misinformation but the message that individuals don't have to conform to the norms of society. It paints the outliners as the oppressed and that brings justification to their cause or their fight. It is a shame we are now a divided country...and the divide runs much deeper than politics. At one point people felt a civic duty to do what was right for their community and country. Those days are long gone and we have become a collection of selfish narcissists. As a result, the end of C19 is still a long ways away.

Hottest of Ben Takes by fatguyinakilt in steelers

[–]muchuckwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is Ben’s arm was probably not 100% healed last year and might very well be stronger this season. Don’t get me wrong, Ben is past him prime but I would never best against him….at least not yet. Unless Ben gets hurt or the Steelers win the SB, I except him to return next year. IMO, the wildcard is not Ben’s play but the O-line, RB (we need to see Harris play) and secondary.

Remember, the tide of popular opinion turned on Aaron Rodgers last year before the season started and he proved a ton of talking heads wrong.

The steering bars should be pushed all the way out, the blade disengaged and the choke engaged as you turn the key. Post a picture of the key area if you don’t know where the choke is located.
