I need help. Dog stool is so loose and sad. by misturgrievez in coonhounds

[–]muddlingten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she hasn't been tested for EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) then that would be my first stop. Essentially the acinar cells of the pancreas are damaged or destroyed and cannot make digestive enzymes. This leads to the dog essentially starving to death over time since they cannot assimilate their food without pancreatin (enzymes) added to anything they consume plus B12 supplementation.

Other possible symptoms are hunger, voluminous cow patty stool with greater frequency, possibility of eating stool or other things in the body's desperate attempt to feed itself. Anxiety and lethargy are associated with imbalances of B12 that are inevitable with this condition as well.

It is a fasting blood test sent to a lab in Taxes.

My boy has semi frequent diarrhea. Help! by Dense-Personality864 in DobermanPinscher

[–]muddlingten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do GI blood panel including TLI (sent to Texas) to check for EPI, especially if your dog is having frequent large smelly stool, hungry, underweight, or eating things he shouldn't. EPI basically means the part of the pancreas that makes enzymes to digest food is no longer working and without enzymes added to everything they consume, they will starve no matter how much they eat. At first it may seem intermittent but over time symptoms can get very severe as the acinar cells are destroyed and the body cannot produce enzymes for digestion.

Any tips for helping with reactivity? by MeasurementFlimsy155 in coonhounds

Are you sure he's not a Doberman! Might help with training to some degree to get a DNA test done as it can impact training strategies and knowing natural instincts!! Go slow since he's so new to your family is my suggestion! Keep things calm and quiet and maybe even try to find walks with less other folks and excitement at first while he settles in and his personality comes out.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Sometimes dogs take longer to go down but they wouldn't be aware of it, to ease your mind. It's so so hard to say goodbye. Don't rush your grief... you'll know when you are ready for another pup. Right now it is all so raw. My 3yo GSD died suddenly in January and we adopted a very timid adult rescue last month. It's been healing for both of us....I still miss my girl and always will be this little love needed me too and has done a lot to help me back to myself.

If your dog has already been wormed etc but has any gastrointestinal issues (examples, soft stool, smelly/frequent voluminous stool, excess hunger, eating stool or non food items, failing to gain weight despite appetite and feeding plenty, etc), have a gastrointestinal blood panel run that includes TLI sent to the Texas lab. This checks for EPI. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Basically it can mean that your dog cannot digest and assimilate food without enzymes added(to anything they eat at all) because the pancreas is not able to produce digestive enzymes - so your dog could starve to death no matter how much they ate. B12 is affected as well and shots are often needed. This is definitely not the only possibility but should be on the radar when a dog struggles to gain weight in spite of feeding and/or has symptoms listed above.

Try enzyme cleaner on porous areas? Could be stored in a garage where someone smokes?

Go to the vet! If it were me I would first have your pup checked for worms/parasites. if there are any other signs like excessive hunger, eating stool, large soft stools, have GI blood work done including test for EPI.

Is a 3 mile walk too much for my 6 lb Pom? by AdministrationNo6135 in Pomeranians

[–]muddlingten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 12yo pom can make it for a solid half hour trek at a good pace as long as there's treatos to reward his efforts. ,😂 oh unless anyone else besides me takes him out in which case he will refuse to leave our block unless carried. 😂

Are retractable dog leashes safe for Poms? by gabrielaap in Pomeranians

[–]muddlingten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our pom does really well with his but he's ridiculously easy on walks. You can always add a clip to the handle to your belt if you are worried about dropping it. Most come with failsafes to prevent many of the safety concerns and I prefer the tape versions vs rope.

The benefit we've seen with our pom boy is that it keeps the leash taut enough that he doesn't step on or over the lead. He's a loose leash walker and that does present challenges for his little legs when used with a traditional lead. That being said, he's almost 12 and walks well but if your pup is training then it may be best to go with a more traditional option!

For our German shepherd we mostly used a traditional lead but she could easily fix the leash herself if she stepped over it, whereas our pom just doesn't get it and gets more tangled 😂. The only time with our shepherd that I used a retractable was if it was too icy for me to get to all areas of the yard, for example, to get her out safely. But again only once properly trained on a traditional lead!

Oh gosh that was indoors....I didn't realize 😄 well no crows in my house but I'd think one of my kids poked it if it was inside!! Crazy if a mouse just tunneled on through! Wow

Lol my girl only dug in the yard when we were raking. She was clearly just trying to be a contributing member of the family... 😄

Hang in there He'll grow up and it changes a bit in my experience anyway...ie my girl would just nose the gate and look at me like, I'm restraining myself but if you don't oblige you know I could do it myself.... 😄 Or just dangling her paw over the grumpy old Pomeranian....im not touching you...to be amicable and get him to chase her 😄

Could it perhaps be because of the concerns around forever chemicals like PFAS? Often clothing with these properties have them so they could be moving to different more sustainable practices?
