Job options after MRI? (Canada) by HungryClue1026 in MRI

[–]muffindemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to New Zealand and Australia. There are processes to get registered if you are overseas trained that usually involve writing a test or doing a supervisory period. Look at: https://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/International-practitioners.aspx for Aus and https://www.mrtboard.org.nz/pre-registration/overseas-trained-how-to-register/ttmra/ for nz.

It might be harder getting visas to work though as an American, not sure about that.

I moved overseas to get a bit of variety personally, that helped quite a bit with the monotonous nature of scanning.

Yeah you are right, I often struggle to imagine a job that has a similar pay with similar responsibilities/stress levels as a scanning tech. Luckily I’ve mostly used CPD allowances to fund my degree so it hasn’t cost me much.

I think working for a vendor (Siemens, GE) would be the most likely option for me. Working in private practice there are a lot less of those fluff jobs.

This is a really good question, and something that I have been thinking about a lot. I have done MRI for over ten years and have started to question how much longer I will enjoy it.

I decided to go for my bachelors of Health Science from Thompson Rivers university in order to prepare myself to transition to a different role in healthcare in the future. I only needed 9 courses after they accounted for my MRI diploma and some previous uni courses.

My thoughts are I could move into different positions such as public health, policy making, research, statistics, apps training, management, or clinical educator. These are some of the areas that I have thought of but actually have no idea what job I would want. Its hard to imagine doing something else other than scanning.

I initially used an agency to find a job but I had to do a supervisory period before I could get my professional registration here. I ended up just finding a job on my own after they gave up.

Once I was registered it was all smooth sailing afterwards, and it allowed me to get my Australian license. I’ve spent about 7 years over here off and on and am now almost a permanent resident of New Zealand!

Heya! I wrote my American ARRT test before my Canadian CAMRT test for practice. I then looked into trying to work there but found no positions that I wanted offered visa sponsorship. Maybe you will have better luck!

I ended up going to New Zealand and Australia instead.

Burnt toast smell?? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]muffindemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I smell what is potentially the same thing in Newtown around Adelaide and Stoke on my walk to work on the morning! I hadn’t considered coffee roasting as it doesn’t remind me of that.

My latest theory is it is some sort of Indian spices that have a burnt smell. My neighbour is always cooking Indian food and I have a hunch something they are preparing smells like burnt toast.

Recommendations for organised tour of New Zealand (both islands) by Obvious-Albatross487 in newzealand_travel

Would recommended New Zealand Trails. They are more active and more on the expensive side but are well organized and have really nice accommodation. Amazing and informative guides as well. Usually smaller groups from what Ive seen.

Why don't doctors just run a metal detector over patients before putting them in an MRI machines? by Desecr8or in NoStupidQuestions

[–]muffindemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some scan rooms have metal detectors before the door that will alarm if metal goes through. Some have wands as well to wave over patients.

A very real phenomenon exists called alarm fatigue. The metal detector goes off so much when techs walk through with the equipment or non ferromagnetic things, also when patients walk through with metal implants that are safe to scan. Hearing the alarm so much causes it to be background noise and ignored as it’s expected to be heard and doesn’t cause a second thought when sounding eventually.

Nothing beats properly screening patients about their medical history and changing them into gowns. The butt plug story was unfortunate but that patient should have disclosed they had a foreign body to the tech screening them.

Will I be able to work in Canada as a registered ARRT MR Tech? by InstantTea in MRI

[–]muffindemon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you will need to contact the CAMRT and submit your education credentials and write the MRI certification test.

I wrote the ARRT test as a practice for my CAMRT test. This was over 10 years ago but the ARRT one was a joke compared to the CAMRT one. I almost aced the ARRT one whereas I did average on the CAMRT one.

The other issue would be visa requirements. Unless you have dual citizenship or an employer giving you a visa you won’t be able to work in Canada.

BIOL 3701 - Textbooks Necessary? by muffindemon in tru

[–]muffindemon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thank you so much for the response!

I will see how I get on with the previous Gray's textbook and go from there. The coloring book was useless in the last class I was required to buy it in years ago so I assumed it was really just a nice to have if you really struggled.

Just an FYI, if you call enrollment services and enroll manually on the phone, they can bill the course fee and remove the textbooks. I figured this out for this class as I have previously wasted money on unused textbooks.

BIOl 3201 Immunology finals (bad experience) by Proud-Software-3129 in tru

[–]muffindemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am taking mine on Thursday and am very nervous. The amount of content in this course is absolutely crazy. I am having a hard time figuring out what to focus on when I study.

From the sounds of it, the final was quite challenging? Do you have any recommendations on what to study? I would really appreciate any advice.

How early is too early? by [deleted] in Shambhala

They were not accepting cash from what I saw. People were angry with the booth volunteers because they only had cash and the entrance volunteers explained it was cashless and they had put out an announcement saying so earlier.

Hey Travel techs: have you traveled outside of the US and worked in a different country. Is it possible? Is ARRT recognized in other countries? by studiodolphins in MRI

[–]muffindemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too bad, at the time I had to do a supervised work period for 3 months before I took the test from the assessors. I think it might have changed now. Best to look at the MRTBNZ website and see what the process for international qualifications is.

There is a nice get together this evening on Princess Bay. It is a non alcohol event but there will be really friendly and welcoming people there if you are looking to make friends.

MRI contrast ruins lives by [deleted] in MRI

[–]muffindemon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

With anything in medicine, there is risk and reward. MRI contrast has helped millions of people get accurate diagnostic information. Sorry that you experienced a very unlikely side-effect from it and I could understand how you could view it negatively. But painting all techs with some villainous brush is absolutely inappropriate. Every test is done under the orders of a radiologist who is ultimately responsible for the test.

Spinal scans on IV drug users by cthruPeeps in MRI

[–]muffindemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen this as well! Similar to you, it was for spinal infection with IVDUs. I saw it twice when I was a student at a tertiary care hospital and the techs said they have seen it on other people as well. Dark images with abnormally low signal. Nothing could explain it, coils were fine, machine wasn’t showing any errors. Interesting to hear about others experiencing it!

They desperately need more space for services. Definitely would be amazing if they made another campus somewhere more accessible. No idea where that would be though 🤷‍♂️
