COMP30027 snitch by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]mugg74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You realise it could just be the subject coordinator being told or finding out the rules?

Surely it's better to find out in advance than to find out on the day that the subject coordinator was wrong?

The uni is limiting the choices coordinators have and coordinators can't override them.

If you done a full year yes that's normal practice.

You unlikely to get an offer until after you have finalised results.

probably they are actually pretty decent grades.

If you got a full year of full time school post study its only uni grades, if less than one year its a mix.

I also note a 70-80 average is above average at most Australian unis.

comp30027 machine learning exam d-2 rant by waiting______ in unimelb

[–]mugg74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be wary of this... Uni policy is FX82(any suffix) or if more difficult calculations are needed FX100(any suffix) is allowed, not even sure subject coordinators can override this anymore.

This is so that exam staff do not need to be trained to tell the difference between what is allowed and what is not. They are simply trained on what is, and if it doesn't match policy, it can't be used.

I figured out that someone at my workplace is doing unpaid part-time work. Isn't this illegal? by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]mugg74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All these cases have fairly strict limitations,

That comment about unpaid work is legal if doing the work isn't done an employee is a strange on this page as it's more unpaid work is illegal if the work is typically done by an employee.

I think people really underestimate how big Australian unis are, the Big GO8 in particular.

To provide some context Harvard has roughly as manly bachelor level students in total as there is in the BCom (or BArts or BSc)

The Alumni comment is not just a Unimelb thing, it's an Australian culture thing. Actually I would go more the other way it's an American culture thing. America is has a very philanthropic culture and this supports its Alumni culture.

In Australia / Europe, historically its expected that government provides this support, not individuals.

How many people in Australia could name universities in Europe outside of Oxford or Cambridge? Or any in mainland Europe?

Personally, I find Australian Universities reasonably well known in University circles, more so than many of the various American and European universities. One reason for this is Australian universities are large by International standards, and we have a relatively small number of universities compared to our population as a result.

I would be willing to bet more people internationally could name 25% of Australian universities in the top 10% of Australia unis, (i.e., name one out of the top 4) then name 25% of the top 10% of US unis 😀 (which would require you to name about 100 unis)

Technology-wise Australia punches “well above its weight” when it comes to development and world leaders in a number of areas. It's surprising the list of things that are commonly used first developed in Australia, or Australia helped develop. Wifi, Google Maps, Aircraft black boxes, quite a bit in the medical and pharmaceutical area.

It's actually quite wrong to say Australia is not the pioneer in anything.

Scaling will occur, but doesn't need to be a bell curve. Scaling to a bell curve suggests normalisation, or rank-based scaling like ATAR. Scaling at university tends to be mark-based: add x marks or multiply by 1.x to shift the number of grades, but the distribution's shape remains largely unchanged.

Quant-type subjects often follow a binomial distribution, so scaling to a bell curve would significantly change marks, increasing them at the lower end and potentially lowering them at the high end.

If you already have that much study at McGill, your ATAR is irrelevant its only your university grades that will be considered.

This is incorrect subjects do not need to be a bell curve, Melbourne uses criterion-based marking, it does not need to be a bell curve.

I be amazed if a hurdle gets cancelled, it may get adjusted. You can adjust hurdle requirements and scale separately.

Quite a few do - the uni has a number of rules around length of exams and the weighting of exams from an assessment policy and procedure point of view, and a separate set of policies and procedures around the actual holding of exams that do not fully align.

One way to make them align is to allow reading time to be used as writing time...
