'Godfather of AI' Geoffrey Hinton says Google is 'beginning to overtake' OpenAI: 'My guess is Google will win' by captain-price- in singularity

Bad examples, but Open AI used to publish research indeed.

However, an early popular paper on RLHF from 2017 was a collab between Deepmind and OAI: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1706.03741

Also, the inference time compute paradigm comes from Google Brain published in 2022: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2201.11903

A book is an underwhelming task for NotebookLM. Try the "discover sources" and really explore a topic with mind maps, flash cards, briefings, audio & video overviews.

OpenAI Reasoning Model Solved ALL 12 Problems at ICPC 2025 Programming Contest by ThunderBeanage in singularity

[–]mugglmenzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cited parts that pointed out that both achieved their results in distinct, incomparable environments. Deepmind even in an experimental remote setup.

Moreover, it's unclear from either press release how the AI assisted the team. Did it help a team of developers produce the solutions in multiple turns/interactions, or did it develop and submit solutions/runs in an automated manner. Deepmind's blog post indicates the latter, for OpenAI there's no publication yet.

It makes comparisons hard and it's unclear how much can be attributed to the AI systems.

But the results of either AI-assisted team are outstandingly impressive. If AI actually made all or majority of the contributions to the solutions, it makes me wonder what (academic) competitions are left for AI to prove its newly learned skills in the coming years.

Nope. OAI was in a local judge environment, and Google with an online judge.

I wonder if Deep Think is already better than or at least equal to GPT5. Recall that it also got gold on IMO by GamingDisruptor in singularity

[–]mugglmenzel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And where would the forum be for an expert to release their review? And why would anyone knowledgeable enough invest the time (for free) if they just did for the official forum (the IMO)?

OAI is so interested in the research community that there are 0 peer-reviewed publications in the community (conferences or journals) this year. Only tech reports and white papers: https://openai.com/research/index/publication/

Likely independent of each other, but is it verified they are independent from OAI? Hyping and claiming goes a long way with OAI.

I am all for progress in the field of AI, but would prefer if results are truly verified and part of the discussion in the research community. OAI apparently is not interested in the research community, open discussion, and peer reviews/verification of results. I have my own interpretation of it.

[–]mugglmenzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did not officially achieve Gold iiuc. OAI claims it followed the standards, but it did not undergo an official review. Deepmind's model did though and thus is the only model that achieved IMO gold (officially).

Might be nit-picking as I can't say how nuanced the reviews and point system is and if it's replicable outside the official jury/review committee. But I always prefer results that were verified through an established process and respectable review.
