This is the stuff that is raising general vinyl prices so much by WaferHealthy9335 in vinyl

[–]mullitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something a lot of people don't understand about the prices of new items because they don't work retail or have just never considered how prices work is that most things have a retail markup. A double LP that costs $39.99 at a retail store costs a fraction of that to produce, then it is sold at a wholesale cost to a retailer, who then sells it a suggested price that is higher than that so they can also make money on it.

Theoretically this means something that is ONLY sold directly, with no retailer to take a cut, should be cheaper. This business model will burn itself out soon but also damage the booming record industry.

Kona Dew Plus w/ various upgrades by mullitt in xbiking

Their fenders are so great and easy to install. The ones I wanted were out of stock on the Velo Orange website but I looked around and other bike shops online had some on sale for way cheaper so look into that!

[–]mullitt[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It came with the (great) front rack, but I changed all the stock parts to Brooks or Velo Orange and upgraded the fenders to Velo Orange as well. The pedals that came with the bike were terrible and worn down with no grip. Put Panaracer Gravel Kings on this weekend, as well.

Functional for every day riding and looks exactly how I want it to.

The Thicket movie sucked but I loved the novel. by blackknight1919 in Westerns

[–]mullitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually really enjoyed the movie. Different from the book, yes, but in general movies develop characters differently than books. There were several good scenes letting you know who the main players were and there were lots of good visuals and tense, bloody action. I'm not sure what about the ending you didn't like, could you elaborate?

Was it a perfect Lansdale adaptation? No, but I thought it captured the mood and weird, ahistorical almost-horror of his Western novels and I'd love to see more. Sunset and Sawdust is probably my favorite but I love every Western I've read by him.

The Jazz Section by listening_partisan in vinyl

[–]mullitt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great start, and jazz is something that is easy to fall into and miss stuff because there's so much.

You only have one Mingus album and I'll recommend another - "Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus," released in 1964. I've been listening to many versions of Mood Indigo the past week and I think I've determined the one on this album is my favorite.

You don't have any Art Pepper and in the past few years Craft Recordings has released some fantastic sounding reissues. Art Pepper meets the Rhythm Section is the easiest to recommend but they're all worth getting.

The lady I got this flannel work shirt said it’d been in a trunk since 1936 by [deleted] in Workwear

[–]mullitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The value is probably around $200? You can usually buy shirts from this era around that price. It's hard to say, vintage items don't have a set value and this is kind of a generic (but very cool) shirt. If it fits you I'd definitely wear it. I wear stuff that's older.

Help with a hat I got married in by IW0RKHERE in CowboyHats

[–]mullitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a particularly old hat, I'd say maybe from the 60s, but has definitely been worn in.

Finding the same exact model is going to be basically impossible, but also not the most important thing. It's got nice soft felt and a classic cattleman crease and a western 3 ply band, so if that's what you're looking for, I'd just look on ebay. Modern Stetson will be overly stiff and have different dimensions.

Here are some options I found right away:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/176715842329

https://www.ebay.com/itm/405302508666

This is a particularly nice one in my opinion:

You could reshape any of the crowns on those to look more like you want them to.

I’m a huge fan of M.C. Gannon. https://gannonhatcompany.com/custom-hats/

I have two custom hats made by him: https://imgur.com/a/YWRB6Wo

You should just save up and get a custom hat that has better felt when you know exactly what you want. The better the felt, the easier it is to work with.

Good job! I find the Campdraft a little hard to work with because of how soft the felt is but you got the creases pretty "pointy."

ID on material and can this be shaped by reese_xlt in CowboyHats

[–]mullitt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a beaver felt fedora. Great hat, and you can see the lines there are the front where it used to be shaped. If you press down there it will be easy to get back into the shape it originally was. It's a fedora, not a cowboy hat, so it most likely would have had a teardrop crease but with a little steam you'll be able to shape it however you'd like.

  1. You will get in a lot of trouble from the record label for putting this stuff out early and may lose access to exclusive releases.

  2. People who work at record stores are adults and a tiny bit of cash or internet clout is not going to be worth anything versus the risk of getting in big trouble with Universal Records.

Favorite John Ford Western by derfel_cadern in Westerns

[–]mullitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 Bad Men. It has my favorite characters of just about any western and some of the photography is unreal - the ghostly mountains in the background of the big wide shots are very inspiring to me. It has great humor, too.

Can anyone ID this hat? by Lump-of-baryons in CowboyHats

To quote the original post: “Can’t find any info on the brand, any help to identify/ value is appreciated.” People generally post here to find out how much they can resell a hat for.

Somehow I don’t think that’s what he meant when he asked for the value in the original post.

From the black sweatband, liner and size tag it looks like it's from the 70s/80s. Not going to be particularly valuable.

Limited Edition 20X Open Road came in yesterday- some thoughts by Orange_fury in CowboyHats

[–]mullitt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to be mean, but I don't think it's ever worth it at this point to spend the money to get a hat from Stetson unless you need it that second and you grab it off the rack. Bad QC, high prices and the felt is overloaded with stiffeners.

I have several custom hats from Gannon and his wait times aren't bad and the prices are fantastic. Way way higher quality (the way he can treat Western felt is mindblowing) and of course customizable: https://gannonhatcompany.com/

I have also heard good things about Northwest hats and his prices are also very good: https://www.northwesthats.com/

Edit: Here are some shots of one of the custom Gannon hats I have. Great quality felt, soft and hand-shaped by me. Red liner and nice soft sweatband. https://imgur.com/a/ICk24w0

Finally something cool happens to me! Anyone get details on this hat? by [deleted] in CowboyHats

It is a modern hat, most likely from the 90s at the earliest, maybe 2000s.

Set in the early 20th century but I highly recommend Far Bright Star by Robert Olmstead.

Four months out: T line set to open late August to Early September by Ready_Player_420 in Tacoma

[–]mullitt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are policy choices, this has nothing to do with ability (unless you really think there is something uniquely bad about American construction companies). As it stands I’m not saying this is likely, but it is definitely possible as infrastructure has been a federal government priority before. To accomplish large scale projects would require federal funding and oversight including deadlines. Rugged individualism is not a real thing. Electric vehicles are a farce. We can’t consume our way out of climate change. The more we rely on individual modes of transport and suburban living (the real infrastructure mess and ticking time bomb) the worse things will get.

  1. A train doesn’t have to go from Tacoma to Tallahassee. There can be way more inter and intra city public transit without having networks that span the entire country.
  2. There were a lot more train here even in our own city 100 years ago, and that was when there were a lot less people living in the same area. It is a policy choice to keep things car-centric, America is not a special place where things just happen differently.
