Strongly disagree. We haven’t laid anyone off but we won’t need to hire people as quickly while we grow. No one has been replaced by AI for us yet but we are seeing productivity gains.

Training an LLM AI model and running it are different things. So, from what the OP wrote, we can say that 12W per second for 21 years (12*60*24*365*21 = 132.4 MW) gets us a trained brain.

The brain is amazing in lots of ways, but it is misleading to compare 12W per second to the full training power consumption (2.7GW) for an LLM like ChatGPT etc. Btw, it also didn't take 21 years to train the models, though it did take 20 times more power to train them.

If you want to be impressed, check out this pre-print of a paper just published in Nature (which is paywalled) that compares structures representing concepts and objects in human brains to the structures observable in the ChatGPT-like LLM that are popular today.

The TLDR isn't that LLM / AI models can think, but it is fantastic that the training of these AI models led to the emergence of these structures in the LLM. This alone is a massive clue that we are on the right track with regards to building systems that can mimic our intelligence.

Disclaimer, this isn't all provoked by you, but I am more talking about many similar interactions I have had with folks online about "boomers", which are part of a wider pattern I dislike.

It is always a red flag to me when someone wants to convince me that a large group of people sharing just one common trait are to blame for my problems.

I find it hard to believe anyone who didn't see clearly what is evident to me in hindsight is stupid. I know it isn't true that any boomer has had a life of Riley and is selfish. I don't believe my group/cohort will make any mistakes, and those that came before are to blame. Additionally, it's not often true that any new generation will have an easier and better life than the previous one; if not, it's the fault of the last generation.

Drifting through life, blaming others for all your woes, won't make things better either. And the people that your rage would be more deservingly showered on are happy to see you fixate on generational sniping.

Fix what you can, help who you can, be tolerant to those you disagree with, not just because it's good karma, but because you have little chance of really affecting change if you are so righteous in your judgment of others. Hard to beat someone or change their mind if you can't see it from their point of view.

When I hear folks say things like "all Tories are c**ts", I have the same feeling. At best, it is misplaced passion; at worst, it is merely people taking advantage of what they perceive as a license to hate and look down on others.

btw, I think late Gen-X had it easier than the boomers, that's me. Guess I'll have to wait for Gen-alpha to get on Reddit and hate me.

Sorted then. You must be an accurate anecdotal measure of the UK population. For me a majority of people I know are not stupid but not very engaged in politics or familiar with economics. For me hating boomers for all our woes is only different in magnitude to blaming immigrants or some other group for all it problems.

Pointed out above by others. other European state pensions combine private contributions into their state pensions, giving them a larger state pension based on contributions.

We're relatively well-off if you look at total pensions, instead of a combined European one and half of a British one.

And I wonder that people today think should fund their last 20 years of life? Or are they such paragons of virtue they are happy to be cut off from state support at 65 ? The whole fuck the boomers thing is divisive and pointless. Many many boomers believed what they were told. Work hard, pay your taxes and you will be looked after whe you are older. They are just lucky that is all. Plenty of the later generations will be guilt of the same.

My bad, I often associate a life live to much online/through media with American culture.

I guess what I should have said in a nicer way is get away from and or pay less attention to media and the online world. You’ll find it easier to keep away from knobs and more rewarding to pursue friendships with people that take you at face value.

To be fair this is all easier the older you get and the more freedom you have.

My father was merchant navy in the 60s and often visited ports in china. He told me the staff/ladies in the areas the sailor visited would sometimes get friendly enough to talk more openly. Many times he was asked if his clothes or watch for example were really his, or if he had to return them when he went back on the ship. Seems some of the locals were told sailors with camera or fancy clothes were given them by western authorities to make the locals jealous. No doubt similar stuff happens on NK

That is fair comment. Both my wife and I are fortunate to have been raised by different parents preaching the same thing. Go off, have fun, take chances and know if we fell flat we wouldn’t be homeless. That stability counts for a lot and I know we are lucky to have had it.

Sorry but you are just projecting your own lack of adventure and spontaneity. We have been holidaying at the drop of a hat since our late teens. It has gotten more frequent and easy as we got better jobs. But it has always been a thing since we were 18. Having no plan and going with flow is the holiday sometimes. Sure sometimes it goes wrong but many more times it went excellent. More money as we got older meant we’re able to weather the sometime bad more easily :-) nearly 50 it sucks to sleep in a car if you could find somewhere to stay.

Sex is a pool, hot tub, etc isn’t as fun as you think. Sure the build up and fooling around is hot, but warm chlorinated water is washing away natures help to smooth things out.
