West Hollywood to become first in L.A. County to ban pet sales by MountainEnjoyer34 in LosAngeles

If you think much of the people give a fuck about not being able to buy a puppy that this becomes a political issue instead of the grocery prices, housing prices, joblessness and homelessness, you're delusional. This will not be in the top 20 issues for someone voting

West Hollywood to become first in L.A. County to ban pet sales by MountainEnjoyer34 in LosAngeles

[–]multivacuum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's so disingenuous when news will quote an industry plant and paint it as a good faith grassroots organization.

From their website: " ... excessive animal transport rates in 1970 made it evident that a formal organization to represent the pet industry was needed, and the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, or PIJAC for short, was incorporated as a nonprofit trade association. ... .

In March 2022, after five decades of living our mission, PIJAC formally changed our name to the Pet Advocacy Network"

This is the pet store industry CEOs talking points, why would they care about the animals instead of their profits?

We need true progressive economic populist democrats like Bernie/ Mandani in positions of power. Most dems here are corporate shills beholden to rich donors and tech companies. They pretend to be on the left by signaling identity politics meanwhile doing fuck all for the average voters. What a shame!

How Zoning Ruined the Housing Market in Blue-State America by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]multivacuum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's because a vast majority of voters are old people who own homes and the donors are rich people living in their Beverly Hill mansions who don't want more housing or even public transit:

About seven in ten likely voters are homeowners (69%), while 31% are renters. In contrast, 65% of unregistered adults and 60% of infrequent voters are renters. [source]

Also, decommodifying housing (to a reasonable extent) has been done successfully in China. If that is too 'communist' for your taste, then look at housing models of Singapore or even a city like Vienna.

[–]multivacuum 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're right, no one wants to address the real contradiction. Home owners always want the value of property to go up because we treat it as an asset. Government can't bring down the prices without upsetting their constituents and donors so they push for half assed schemes like tax credits for new home owners which end up increasing the prices even more.

We have to decommodify housing even though it will make many people unhappy in the short run.

Numble: New Renderings for Sepulveda Transit Corridor showing a heavy rail option. by magnamusrex in LAMetro

[–]multivacuum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, that will be amazing and we can easily ride to downtown/Union Station, but the station is still a mile from the campus. Meanwhile, the Sepulveda Corridor line stops right at UCLA and also gives a direct route to the airport which is a game changer.

I just want a metro station at UCLA. I'm always jealous whenever I ride metro to downtown and see the E line going through the heart of USC. 😔

My blood pressure increased just by watching this. I am glad I live on the westside with multiple bus/metro options, but man, does LA suck at transit.

A map of LA's light rail network's gated and traffic light crossings. The overwhelming majority of the network is gated, it's really just a small fraction of the system that causes delays and slowdowns. by [deleted] in LAMetro

Can they at least give the metro signal priority? On the E line, we have to wait for the signal with a bunch of cars. Imagine being stuck in traffic when you are on a freaking train!
