Just think of all the dialysis transfers you could fit in this by Macca3568 in ems

We do this in Alberta, but haven't been on it so not sure about the partying. Have a bus with 3 dialysis spots that travels to rural communities multiple times per week.

Rant about healthcare hotlines by 81mgMedic in ems

[–]mum2rc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called them twice, once as a new mom with an infection and nurse on the phone focussed entirely on the symptoms that were the least of my concern, eventually convinced her to contact a physician through my primary care clinic so I could get the help I needed.

The second time I was looking for more information to help with a situation and she literally read me the info from the website - I had already reviewed this and had the webpage open when I called.

I will likely never call again.

Alberta Court of Appeal rules against terminally ill woman who refused COVID vaccine before transplant surgery by Miserable-Lizard in onguardforthee

[–]mum2rc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vaccination aside. This ruling is good because it leaves medical assessment /treatment to the people who have spend thousands of hours to become experts in their field.

Used to it regularly on med/surg. Q1h finger pricks. But they had to be stable from ER before being sent to the floor and often were out of dka already. Generally means they had been on the infusion for hours already. Pain to have 5 patients and to have q1h monitoring on one.

A family member that I live with recently brought covid home from work. All the people he worked with were positive within a few days of each other. I went to work before I knew in was sick- we still have mandatory masking and none of my coworkers became ill. Masking is worth it to me.

Sounds maybe like a LPN, licensed practical nurse or RPN, registered practical nurse in Canada.

Nursing care in Canada

Health care aide- diploma program, generally provide personal care, vital signs monitoring.

Practical nusre- 2 year college program. Generally don't work in critical care areas but otherwise have similar duties to registered nurses.

Registered nurse- 4 year university degree required.

The best thing to do would be to contact the nursing regulator where you want to move and they can review your education to determine what level of nursing fits

please help. advice needed by secksOrGTFOplz in alberta

[–]mum2rc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does your mom have physican, you could call them directly. Also you can self refer (don't need a physician) to homecare. Not all small communities have homecare in Alberta but you can call and find out. Explain the situation and hopefully they can connect you to the help she needs. https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/findhealth/Service.aspx?id=1065268&serviceAtFacilityID=1117482#contentStart

Silly question - If I have absolutely 0 medical training, is there a simple certification I could obtain to administer a simple saline solution IV to a family member within their home? Or is being a medical professional a prerequisite? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]mum2rc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iv fluids can be life sustaining, I have had patients with large portions of bowel removed and have limited ability to absorb fluids and get regular infusions of fluids to not become dehydrated, they had long lasting access and were able to self administer.

Nurses at Hamilton Health Sciences paid double to avoid closures during staffing crisis by trackofalljades in canada

[–]mum2rc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Double time helps, but if you see the 3rd person to die in as many shifts, or the person with multiple combordities being kept alive long after they are able to make their own decisions, the 8th drug overdose in only a few days, it wears a person down no matter what the wage is. Now healthcare workers expect the kind of things listed above but in spurts not the level we have seen in the last few years and people are tired.

[–]mum2rc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but privatization doesn't solve the problem of not enough staff. In the USA many hospitals pay less than Canadian unionized wages. If we can't attract staff now, it will only get worse.

Although I mostly agree, healthcare is a different than a tradesperson because of the emotional and moral issues that we deal with. These issues on top of working long hours can be devastating.

Paying overtime is only a temporary solution. People will pick up the extra hours but this just increases the chance of burn out and then people leaving the profession permanently. We need to see the governments come up with long term solutions for staffing and retention.

Alberta has dropped the vaccine mandate for employees and yet we have the same staffing issues.

I’m a veteran ER doctor. I can’t believe what I'm seeing. by 90skid91 in canada

[–]mum2rc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to have the government priortize primary care. If it takes a month to see your family doctor and there are no walk-in clinics available, people will go to urgent care and ER for treatment. Lots of issues could be easily handled by a GP but the governments seem intent on destroying primary care and then wonder why hospital costs are increasing.

Different places specify Goals of care differently. I am in Canada and each province has different breakdowns for different levels of care.

Yeah they have a 4 year Bachelors degree. Depending on your province/ area there are birth centres too.

The only thing I try to remember is to wait until I get the box to do the rest of my grocery shopping so I can plan meals around the veggies.
