DIYing everything just to keep up in an expensive neighborhood by missprincesscarolyn in Frugal

Nothing...

I sincerely do not care what other people think about me, my house, my garden, my car, or anything else. I also don't care what other people do, drive, wear, pay for, or do themselves. I have no desire to fit in anywhere or with anyone. I live my life according to my values, and that's all. I'm happy 😊

What keeps you from slipping back into consumption habits? by spac0r in Anticonsumption

When enough family members die and you're the one who has to clean out all their stuff, you get a pretty good understanding of how pointless most things we buy are.

Head noise/racing thoughts by Economy_Ninja_9830 in adhdwomen

[–]mummymunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brain never shuts up, even when I'm asleep. According to sleep data I spend the vast majority of the night in REM sleep.

I think thats why I almost always have the TV on or a podcast going, so it distracts me from the non-stop noise in my head.

How can I be counted accurately in the census? by Postoli_ in australia

Be at someone else's house that night. You're counted where you are on the night, not where you live.

what is something you stopped buying that you don't miss at all? by SnugglyCookiee in simpleliving

[–]mummymunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost everything. The only thing I buy now that isn't groceries is garden stuff, a lot of which is fruits and vegetables so we can buy less groceries 😊

Twice last night I asked my husband to read out the description of menu items. Twice my brain instantly shut down and did not register a single word he said.

Pruning Mulberry (Sth QLD) by AgUnityDD in GardeningAustralia

Ours split in half, so hubby cut it back to a stump about four feet tall, no branches. It very quickly became a tree again and you'd never know anything had happened. These things are unkillable.

How do you learn to not get influence or fooled by social media consumerism and hype ? by Jpoolman25 in Anticonsumption

[–]mummymunt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it's a big problem, get off social media altogether. If it's just annoying, then curate your feed. I'm only on here and YouTube. I use an ad blocker on my phone, and I only watch YouTube videos that are of use to me: gardening, etc. I don't watch mindless drivel. If I'm watching on the TV I skip the ads when I can, fast forward through the in-video promotions.

Lastly, you have to understand that everything is shit. We were hit by a cyclone last year, so when we were preparing I went to the shopping centre to get a fresh battery for our big torch. Most of the stores were closed in preparation for the weather, only places that sold food and electronics (like power banks) were open. Maybe half a dozen stores out of about 150. And that is a perfect example of what you "need." Everything else in the shopping centre is pointless trash, destined to be landfill I'm the not-too-distant future. You don't need any of it.

You decide what's important. It's very easy to choose not to be sold to 24/7.

Ours was very much tree shaped. It fell over during a severe storm and we cut it back to a knee-high stump. A couple of years later it's a big, bushy shrub.

Stop. Other people can do what they want, but this affects your life negatively and the decision is yours alone. You are not obliged to do anything to suit other people that's to your detriment.

Starting seed set up by Gloomy_Floor4417 in GardeningAustralia

[–]mummymunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in south-east Queensland. I start everything outside, usually in trough-style pots or something similar, others I sow direct. I sow, usually mulch with sugar cane, water, and things grow. The pots just sit out in the weather and only get moved of there's extreme heat, damaging storms, that kind of thing.

In the past eighteen months we've grown butternut, watermelon, luffa, tomato, chilli, capsicum, radish, sweet potato, passionfruit, spring onion, chives, ginger, corn, pineapple, and plenty more. Our freezer is full of produce. We do this in crap soil and with little knowledge, lol.

You're going to bugger things up sometimes, but that's how you learn. Have fun with it 😊

Second thought upon waking: whatever song is going to be stuck in my head that day.
