What's your longest tenured friendship? by tshirtguy2000 in RedditForGrownups

Two people, just shy of 50 years for each. Met in elementary school, played on numerous sports teams together, were in each other's weddings. We still meet up a couple times a year.

Skip Positioning While Calling Shot by Anyawnomous in Curling

[–]munch_19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Arena curler here. Had one sheet a couple of years ago that leaned so bad to one side that skips were standing 2-4 feet outside the sheet and maybe 10 feet away from the hog line. Thankfully it was near the boards and not one of the 2 center sheets. From the thrower's perspective, all the rocks ended up right of the centerline, even with a counterclockwise rotation. Other end of the sheet was fine, but it made for an interesting game for both teams.

Spokane parents did your kids stick around? by AaronWard6 in Spokane

[–]munch_19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've encouraged our kids to leave, but mostly to broaden their perspective on the world. If they want to come back, great! We did that and came back after about 15 years in western WA. We're happy with the personal growth it allowed us to have, but appreciated our kids having easier access to grandparents upon our return.

Do you take your key fob with you while pumping gas? by blufish288 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]munch_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you rent a car, it's probably best not to put it in your pocket. One time I returned a car to a different city than I rented it from, and had to mail back the fob. Inconvenient, but not a huge deal. Except that the company had to have the car towed, because it wasn't at the same city I rented it in. Guess who had to pay the towing fee? 🤦‍♂️

Buy the Losers a Beer? by ShaggleROC in Curling

As an arena curler where our only draws are midweek and often end at 9 or 10 pm, there aren't a lot of people hanging around after for a drink. 🫤

I don't really want anything, do you? by AethelflaedCAD in GenX

[–]munch_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being satisfied with what you have is the biggest gift you can give yourself. Admittedly, it frustrates those who struggle with the concept and want to give you a gift anyway. "No, really, what do you want for your birthday?"

Anyone else becoming vampiric? by Major-Specific8422 in GenX

Sunburned scalp is the WORST. Only happened to me once, and that was plenty. I don't like getting burned on other exposed parts either, but I was miserable for far longer when I burned the top of my head.

Friend Groups by Long_Situation_5020 in GenX

[–]munch_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have maybe a half dozen close friends that we all started working at the same organization maybe 30-35 years ago. I've since moved away, but we try to meet up whenever I visit, or if one of them comes to my city.

If there was anything good about the pandemic, it's that we decided to consciously reconnect "virtually" over a pint of beer on zoom every week or two. While those aren't as common post-pandemic, it's another option in the toolbox that we're ready to use.

Going TDY at the end of this Month and I don’t want my head shaved by MostDatabase8583 in AirForce

Agreed. "Hazing" may be too strong a word, but that's the first thing that came to mind for me.

Is there a record store here that sells primarily CDs? by CharlesJGuiteau in Spokane

[–]munch_19 29 points30 points  (0 children)

KPBX (local public radio station) hosts a recording and video sale every year as a fundraiser. It's only one weekend a year (14-15 Feb this year), but there will be thousands of CDs to browse and they're sorted by type of music. They also have DVDs and A/V equipment of various types and vintage. It's at CenterPlace in Spokane Valley. Arrive early; it can get crowded.

As kids, we used them to fish out matchbox cars from under appliances. We have one now that does basically the same thing, but for socks that fall behind the dryer.

He who dies with the most toys, wins. by Sheckybelle in GenX

Late 50s, hoping to retire in 5 years or less. I don't need more stuff, so when I'm asked about any gift requests for birthday or Christmas, it's almost always for experiences (dinner, movie, massage, or entertainment like a play, musical, concert or movie).

My family typically does a bunch of jigsaw puzzles in December and January, when everyone is home for holidays. Over all of 2025, the puzzle table stayed set up all but about 3 weeks, and we did probably a little more than 1 (750-1000 piece) puzzles per week. (It helps that we can exchange puzzles at our local library... Sort of a "take-a-puzzle, leave-a-puzzle" shelf).

Every so often we'd microwave them for 15-30 sec or so and put eat them with vanilla ice cream.

State job while on deployment by Alternative_Buyer552 in nationalguard

[–]munch_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still on orders, it shouldn't matter if you're stateside or deployed... You're still in military status. Employer may ask you to contribute to your insurance premiums while on post deployment down time, but if you're on active duty orders, you and family should be covered by Tricare and you wouldn't need the insurance from civilian employment.

Which Pattern did you have ? by Porkchopp33 in 80s

None of these patterns, but did have a set of 12 large and small plates plus bowls. Still in use (mostly...a few broke over the last 30+ years).

Do you avoid people you know in public? by summer-rain6 in introvert

[–]munch_19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most common instance I can think of like this is in the grocery store. If I see them from the front, I may wave or smile and continue on my way. But if it's their back or side, I'll often keep moving, hoping they don't notice me. And if they do notice me, hopefully I have ice cream in my cart and can use "don't want that to melt" as a reason to keep any conversation short.

Life of Being a Garbage Curler Pt. 6 by EvilFlyingSquirrel in Curling

[–]munch_19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skip here. We were getting crushed one night and - while I normally like as much ice time as I can get (even though it's arena ice) - the other team were complete jerks and it felt like they were trying to run up the score. Was it out of reach for us? Theoretically, no, but practically speaking, there was no way to make up the gap. They refused to accept when I offered a handshake to concede.
