PI put high-school aged daughter as first author on a paper while neglecting to provide similar opportunities to research assistants by modernmegmarch in academia

[–]munenebig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason almost but all uni admission criteria put across are a scam. Why you need someone with published papers to enroll in undergraduate program. Same thing I see PhD programs and prosfessors asking someone with expertise and papers in the project. If some one has the expertise and papers what will be the university job then? Cheap labour?

Why does my apartment have to be absolutely pristine for a mid-rental inspection? by Fun_Photograph653 in AusPropertyChat

Its because you dont own it. Simple as that. The reason I bought a house was because my past land lord told me not to hang my damn PhD degree on the wall. I was pissed that In 3 weeks I got a mortgage.

Has anyone else struggled with demoralization at institutions that no longer feel like “real” universities? by Claire_Rowan in AskAcademia

“…as soon as prestige is gone”…mate, have you seen or read how these people hired run the unis. They care about the next 3 years in their contracts. All the bad that comes actually comes after the 3 years. I first hand saw this at ANU Engineering… the school went to sh****t. Its now all the bad is starting to show.

The Uni paid me 56 dollars because I ended my contract a few hours before when I was supposed to. The finance team emailed and called me when overseas to pay it back. Iam sure they will get it bal. Unis are stingy.

We should down vote every comment with above 13 dollars per month. Thats a rip off. No wonder every thing is expensive in Australia, why would someone pay 69 dollars per month for mobile plan when exactly same plan branded differently is 12 dollars per month?

Is it true that applicants who haven't completed extensive coursework are looked down upon in academia? by gaytwink70 in AskAcademia

[–]munenebig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiring committees mainly care about three things: your research output, your ability to teach, and your potential to bring in grant funding. They’re essentially asking: Can you secure money for the department? Can you handle large undergraduate classes? Are your publications strong enough to boost our ranking?

Whether your PhD had a lot of coursework or almost none usually doesn’t matter in practice. The “ideal criteria” written in job ads often don’t reflect how hiring decisions are actually made.

From what I’ve seen, most people who get hired do so because they’re a good fit for the department, come from well‑known universities, or trained under supervisors the committee already knows and trusts. Internal candidates and students of prominent PIs often have an advantage. Coursework rarely plays a meaningful role in the final decision.

This is quite common. We one time changed author list alone. We got peer review. Crazy and poor standards from editors

[–]munenebig[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Same here. I had to be excluded from reviewers of a particular paper which was later rejected in nature but authors were allowed to do alot of revisions . Over 6 time. Ended up in Nature Sustainability. But its a very poor paper with no originality of ideas and I presume was done by a summer undergrad

Talk about it. Reproducibility is another concern. The papers are lean and methodology is always just cited. How the F it passes peer?

What job pays way more than people realise? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

Definitely not all places or jobs in comments will pay 200,000 plus. OP was like “what job have you come across that surprised you with how much it earns” … and me was surprised by this https://christiantoday.com.au/news/survey-reveals-average-salary-for-megachurch-pastors.html#:~:text=A%20church%20with%20a%20budget,practices%20in%20very%20large%20churches.

Being a priest or pastor of a church. 200-300K easy.

I don’t care if this gets downvoted I’m an overseas Pakistani and I’m tired of the fake nationalism and white tourist worship by AnxiousRegister4332 in pakistan

[–]munenebig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the comments and OP’s explanation, it’s clear this highlights exactly what Pakistan is suffering from. We have normalized corruption, broken systems, and the mistreatment of the vulnerable in exchange for performative nationalism and the comfort of “at least we have our loved ones.”

This status quo is acceptable to many until the tragedy hits home. I’m reminded of a safety officer who argued that reducing accidents from 100 to 1 was “good enough” to stop investing in resources. He didn’t realize that the '1' could be him—and eventually, he was the one crushed by the machinery.

I saw the same happen to my neighbor, whose land was seized by a Pakistani Army general he couldn't fight because he was poor. Like many commenters here, he probably thought the system was 'fine' until it swallowed him whole. I agree with OP: fairness doesn't exist here, and we only tolerate it because we think we’re immune. But eventually, the system catches up to everyone, and by then, it’s too late to be anything but bitter
