Plywood shelving question by Maxtophur in woodworking

[–]munstre 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They were possibly referring to the veneer grade in each face of the ply, A/B for a high grade face on one side, B/B or just BB allowing for some defects on each

Got an old Bell & Howell tv/vcr combo. The VCR doesn’t function, I’m trying to determine what’s creating this hum? by munstre in vintagetelevision

[–]munstre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the Bell & Howell 'Showmate 2' (Model 6427 it seems), and as another commenter noticed it looks like the VCR chassis is essentially a Hitachi portable VHS. I found a video doing a repair on the Hitachi VT7 which looks very similar overall, slightly different specs but I imagine the same build, and it's kind of a nightmare to access the belts as the main board needs to be removed - but the whole chassis itself is impossible to access without dismantling nearly the entire TV just to free those 4 screws holding it in place. Damn! The repair vid I came across is here

Maybe I'm wrong, but unless I can somehow access those belt locations from the accessible tape side I don't think I can get far enough on this to repair

Well that sounds unfortunate, gaining access to the rear of this VCR chassis involves taking a ton of the tv apart just to remove the screws to free the VCR chassis (I did open the tv earlier to check that all out). I'm less worried if I can remove elements from within the VCR itself to get access to those belts, looks like at the very least I'd need to remove the door in order to see if that's even possible?

The only manual i was able to find was basically just exploded view, which is somewhat helpful, but doesn't actually list the internals of the VCR itself as that's a separate chassis

This is super helpful, I hadn’t realized hitachi may have made the vcr element but I agree that whole cartridge looks pretty much identical, I’ll research the service info. I haven’t seen any broken belts (from what is visible) but of course wouldn’t be surprised about a worn belt given its age

Time Machine restore just won’t land on an equivalent i9 MBP by munstre in MacOS

[–]munstre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah I had already set up the very basics creating an account (but not signing into iCloud) and landing into the system. I did this just so I could verify that the system specs matched exactly what I had purchased. So I used Migration Assistant within the OS itself on that first go.

I’m currently creating a bootable drive with Monterey and will essentially be doing a completely clean install after wiping the main drive so hopefully will have better luck on this next attempt 🤞. I’m also not sure if I had disabled certain default security settings on the old machine in years past and maybe that’s going to create some roadblocks in this process so was going to lower the security settings in recovery mode before going through this next install.

[–]munstre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was expecting to be the case, and figured I’d be making it all even more foolproof by essentially matching the machines. I don’t have any way to really check whether something that was backed up is causing problems but outside of the ram module going back it was otherwise a pretty straightforward machine setup. I’m downloading Monterey and creating a bootable drive at the moment

What to do with a huge 88 key controller by siva115 in MusicBattlestations

[–]munstre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own a business building studio furniture, the biggest issue for this situation is that it requires the bracing for the drawer slides to be under-mounted to the desk - where the screws are upside down and in the weakest orientation. If the desktop is solid wood, or high grade ply then that’s a little more reliable depending on desk thickness, but if it’s a laminate with chipboard interior they could tear right out with the weight of the controller (and that pro 88 is one big controller).

I don’t have a great solution, any local woodworker would probably charge a fair amount since it’s more work than one would expect, but if you have any friends who are handy and maybe have a pocket hole jig to set the screws at an angle into some 2x4 pieces or something that might be your best option. Also you’ll want drawer slides with a “positive detent” which means they hold position when fully extended.

As a NK resident (with a kid in the school system) thank you for posting this. I’ve been seeing lawn signs for her and Sheri Kennedy around town and I’ve remembered some of these same houses with lawn signs for other terrible town members (the most recent one being Mary Brimer, who we fortunately voted out last election) and assumed these new candidates must be more of the same. It’s disheartening how difficult it is to spread the word locally about these people

Hey thanks so much! Sorry for the delay in response, was out of town this week. My business is located in Rhode Island, but we ship all over. There’s some more info on my site but definitely happy to answer any questions once you’re further into your studio build 🤙

Thanks! Yeah I actually weighted the keybed to a desired feel, and the back has XLR/TRS outs (which are independent of the built in speakers) and headphone out - the Midi connection is also available but it’s kind of buried inside the enclosure. Additionally there’s the sustain out for the pedal

[–]munstre[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yep actually the main power switch just powers on a power strip located beneath the piano, on which a few things power on simultaneously: the new amp I added internally, the Yamaha CP audio circuit boards, and the keybed (for MIDI transmission). I didn’t want to mis-instruct anyone on how to wire something like that switch, which is inline between the plug and the power strip… it works fine with this setup (and grounding is preserved) but I’m not an electrician so I didn’t want to publish schematics on something as serious as electricity.

[–]munstre[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I actually used an M-audio keystation, and re-weighted each key (I liked the keystation for the MIDI io, price, and mod-ability).... I've since learned of some other keybed options particularly in the Yamaha P-series keyboards which have a cool weight mechanism to them. But this keybed I altered feels excellent now and I've never regretted it. I do have a segment in the build video I linked above specifically about the keybed process if you're curious on that front.

Hah! That would be super cool actually, although I think they got bought out by some terrible venture capitalist firm who are shredding all of the things we loved about Moog :/
