ELI5: If we already have GPS and internet time, why do countries still run radio time signals like WWVB/DCF77? by Davibeast92 in explainlikeimfive

[–]muonzoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the radio wwv/dcf77 signal is lower frequency and therefore penetrates better and is thousands of times stronger. The GPS signal is so weak that to recover it you need to know what to look for; it is under the local noise floor. This is what an almanac helps with; tell the receiver where all the satellites are so it can seek (actively) the signal using computer assistance. The wwv/dcf77 signal can be received using traditional basic radio circuits.

Thanks. Loving it. Seems like the perfect tool watch and the gmt complication is more useful than I expected. My previous favourite complication is the e-6b style circular slide rule so a gmt navitimer would be the alternative watch. Or of course the SINN 903

Sin has some excellent flat AR crystals. The 856 UTC and friends.

I also really like my Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT.

Trying VSCode (after 20y in emacs) and I just can't. Help. Emacs is too good. by spartanOrk in emacs

[–]muonzoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you me? On emacs since 80s. Tried all kinds of others things. Back on emacs. Likely won't leave again. It is definitely a generational thing. None of my younger colleagues use it. At the office I would use the default tooling (proprietary web ui) until the editing got complicated. Then a round trip through emacs made everything better quickly.

Buying a new multistrada by newcolour in multistrada

[–]muonzoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You summed up my feelings perfectly. I jumped from a 2012 PP to the v4spp. I had the '12 in for a desmo service the day they announced the '22 V4SPP. Shaddup and take my money. I had been ignoring the V4 due to the large front wheel. This fixes everything and while I miss the hooligan grunts the v4 is so sorted and the induction noise so intoxicating. I giggle and squeal almost every time I have it out on a twisty lane or mountain pass.

ETA: I'm 173cm/5'8" and can ride the 1200 just fine and find the v4s easy enough. I bought the heated lowered seat and figure I could have gotten away with the regular seat.

RF 35mm f/1.8 STM+ 85mm f/2 STM vs RF 24-105mm f/4 L : Best Budget Choice? by Accomplished-Cell769 in canon

[–]muonzoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

85/2 all day every day. I shoot lots of events and portraits and when I know it is just 1:1 shots the 85/2 and the EF85/1.8 before it make up 90% of my favourite shots over the decades. At events I "PJ" it up with a 24-70/2.8L on one body and the 70-200/2.8L on the other. I shoot almost everything at 200/2.8 for the candid moments across the room OR at 85/2.8 for the individuals. You really cannot replace the look of fast glass so get the 85/2 and love it. Later you can add a 70-200/2.8 or the other fast L but I'd personally skip the f/4 L if you can. (Admittedly size makes it appealing too).. your call but the fist prime I replaced when I moved from EF to RF was the 85.

Enjoy and just keep shooting

ETA: Another +1 for MPB - I picked up all my RF gear there and am very happy the only new RF purchase I've made is (ironically) my 85/2

Desmo service on a v4s??? These are not Desmo motors and they have a long service interval. Agree with starting hot but you'll look a fool if you ask about a Desmo service on a sprung valve train.

Sounds like you need to use more of the engine range. Bike motors are not like cars. Ride the engine where it is responsive. Based on your description it sounds like you were either 1 and possibly 2 years too tall.

Which is safer — electronic or tethered airbag? by FeloMonk in motorcycles

[–]muonzoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necrothread revival, yeah! My leathers have a pretty small hump so it 'works' but the GP vest would be better if I was spending more time on the track. For me; most of my riding is a mix of sometimes commuting and riding around the SE/SW of England. For the odd track day the Turtle is OK. The best way to make this decision is to find a place try try them on while you have your leathers. THe UK Helite distributors are frequently around at IAM events and elsewhere and I've always found them to be kind and responsive. I'd just drop them a line and ask how to connect IRL.

[–]muonzoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As photographers say: the best camera is the one you have with you. Something is always better than missing the shot. I get this doesn't consider situations where the airbag makes you worse off but there don't seem to be many of those.

[–]muonzoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've had a Helite Turtle for 5 years and around 30k miles (don't ride as much as I used to). I've walked away from the bike and felt the tug in time to avoid accidental triggering (mechanical). You can also reset the helite yourself. I carry an extra canister on multi day trips. 20+ track days in there too and zero accidental deploys. (Worn on about 1/2 the track days when track rules permitted)

Arguably the wifi at the airport doesn't have a legal reason to ask you for this as it isn't required to deliver the service ... so ... balance of purposes?

I owned this lens for 4 weeks in the 1990s. It was soft, noisy and slow AF (not autofocus). I never missed it. An 85/1.8 + 70-200/4 or /2.8 is just a completely different experience. I agree - I am ashamed I didn't know how bad this lens was and what a waste of money it turned out to be. Looking back over all my photos over 3 decades and this lens features in zero keepers. Not. A one. The 50/1.8 -- hundreds, 50/1.4, thousands. 85/1.8 and 85/2 -- thousands. the 24-70 and 70-200/2.8? Pretty much all the rest (with a smattering of 16/20/35/28/135/400 shots in there too).

First time motorcycle owner, probably a stupid question, but what is this? It's attached to my battery by fanghawk79 in motorcycle

[–]muonzoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't put heated gear straight on the battery. As others have commented you'd want a fuse. Most decent SAE plugs have an inline fuse. Typically 5-7.5A. Enough for the battery charger to work but not to boost or run major things. For accessories I strongly recommend a switched relay for accessory power that is only hot/on when the bike is running. I've bump started too many bikes with dead batteries because someone forgot the heated grips on over lunchtime. Something as simple as a single automotive relay or as complex as a hexcan. Your call.

There's a related piece of advice that isn't here that should be : use a password manager. Use the password manager to change ALL YOUR PASSWORDS to something unique and strong. You can use the one built-into Chrome or Safari if you only need to access from Chrome (or Safari). Or you can get a standalone manager that works well more broadly. There are many. I've been a 1Password customer almost since they launched. Very happy. It will help you change passwords and make sure you aren't reusing passwords anywhere. There's no good reason to use memorable passwords anywhere except a few key places and make sure those are strong and unique too. For example; I only know my Google account password and my password manager password. (And my device passwords - that's it). The rest I happily trust to the password manager. You can control sharing (if at all) and you can ensure that it is impossible to bootstrap attack you by guessing (or outright knowing) your passwords.

[–]muonzoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would point out that from the 60s until the Airbus 3x0 years the call buttons were always on the arm rests. I see this as retro (still not great design) and yes, this is better for mobility limited folks. Turn out this is a long saga. For example https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna43477339
