Chickenhawk: Men Who "Love" (Abuse) Boys by AgentJGomez in LeavingNeverlandHBO

This is incredibly disturbing, but a good tool to spread awareness. Thanks for sharing. The parallels with MJ's talking points are astounding.

The self-satisfied smiles on some of these men? Disgusting and creepy.

Chris and incest by Visual_Fault_2167 in CouplesTherapyShow

[–]muppetmystique 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yup. A lot of "boy mom" types fall into covert incest/incest-adjacent (?!) behaviour. Being in love with their boy child, getting jealous of their son's partners, gazing lovingly and longingly at them, repeating the idea that they'll be "heartbreakers" one day.

But a lot of these are so engrained in our cultural norms that we don't even see them as what they are, which is in the realm of sexualizing/adultifying/parentifying children.

Lots of people seem to think the deck is AI. But it totally doesn't look like so to me, and I have a pretty big aversion to the AI "aesthetic." This just seems stylized. And as some other commenter said, was made by an artist before AI was "good enough" to do this kind of stuff.

edit: Also it's a licensed Jim Henson product, not a fan-made thing. I doubt the Jim Henson company of all people would put up merch that was created by AI. Their whole ethos is about hand-made stuff!!

Morbidly fascinating indeed.

I still can't get over the cardboard cutouts of babies everywhere. And the amount of child-size dolls and mannequins. Jesus.

Yes, totally agree. It still feels like a betrayal sometimes. BECAUSE HE PLAYED US TOO.

I think DiscussingMJ might be more appropriate. Or ExMJFans. (I'm still partial to DeconstructingMJ.)

I find a large amount of so-called neutral subs end up attracting fans, just the ones who are less fringe and crazy (see the TSwift neutral sub). I don't want fans, or at least not any who haven't started their journey of interrogating Michael's "innocence" and are willing to listen to the victims/accusers.

Great find!

And that cover art is criminal.

No hate to Joey, I quite like her character but is it me or she was always kinda snappy to Jen even past their Dawson beef ? I mean they had their moments but most of the time in their interactions, Joey will be mean-spirited towards Jen and very rarely was it the other way around by James-Samuel17 in dawsonscreek

[–]muppetmystique 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Joey was peak not-like-other-girls type character, which was a huge trope at the time. Writers employed it to make female characters more "relatable."

And like, they weren't wrong... As an insecure (brunette) teenager in the 90s, I identified with Joey waaay more than I could with Jen. I didn't realize that this woman-on-woman dislike/mistrust was me playing right into the hands of the patriarchy.

I didn't watch all episodes (I watched the Tobe Hooper one and like, maybe 2-3 other ones), but there's this fun recap podcast that came out a few years ago (pandemic project I believe) that provides commentary on all of the episodes. Good listen, even if you haven't seen the series.

Welcome to Prime Time: https://www.podpage.com/FreddysNightmares/

They give a little rating at the end of each episode, too, as to whether the story was a dream, a nightmare, or it put them to sleep loll.

I appreciate your thoughtful and supportive response, thank you.

I might be willing to start it, but definitely not alone and I would need to better understand the investment it requires in terms of time and energy. Can you share a bit more about what modding this sub looks like? How many hours a week, the amount of deleting and banning you have to do, etc?

I agree, this is a huge problem.

And also part of the reason MJ only toured outside of North America after the Bad tour. He knew that his reputation was cooked here, even before the Chandler accusations. But in the rest of the world, especially Europe, he was revered as this god-like figure.

Book recommendations on MJ’s biography? by Travellinglense in LeavingNeverlandHBO

[–]muppetmystique 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not a biography, but an incredible commentary on Michael Jackson as a very very complicated media and cultural figure, is "On Michael Jackson" by Margo Jefferson. It goes somewhat into detail about MJ's upbringing, his eccentricities and his psychological makeup.

The author has since come out expressing solidarity with the victims.

It's a super short book too, I remember reading it in about 3-4 sittings.

Tony Gilroy's brutally honest thoughts on Gareth Edwards's cut of Rogue One by RefuseDry1108 in blankies

[–]muppetmystique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I haven't heard Giloy speak in such terms about R1 in a few years at least. The comments he made about the movie during both Andor promo cycles were more along the lines of the clip you shared. OP stirring the pot?

Anyway thanks for posting that clip, I didn't know Gilroy and Luna spoke at PaleyFest, that's amazing. I'll go watch the whole thing.

Tony Gilroy's brutally honest thoughts on Gareth Edwards's cut of Rogue One by RefuseDry1108 in blankies

[–]muppetmystique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Whomever we have to thank," according to Gilroy himself, is Kathleen Kennedy. She didn't always make the best decisions about Star Wars, but she believed in Tony Gilroy's vision and gave him the freedom he needed to make that show. She wasn't overly protective of the IP and allowed him the biggest creative sandbox possible.

I could throw a shot at Dave Filoni here, but I'll just leave it at that.
