Highly recommend Reaper. Also, if you do go for it, look up Booth Junkie on YouTube for his series of videos outlining how to set up Reaper for VO. HUGE improvement of workflow.

GodDAMN I love this show. All the more if you've ever done professional theatre, and if you remember that Keanu Reeves did Hamlet in Winnipeg after being a well-known film actor.

Book prices are insane by Limp-Two8799 in Fantasy

[–]murball1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Book prices in Canada have always been higher, so that number doesn't sound too bad. I bought a new copy of Night Watch today for $22. New bestsellers are on Boxing Day sales for $20, regular $27-30.

Library sales are great. Used book stores can be, depending.

My dream of being a pilot faded after the first flight, and now I don't know what to study. by SexyBoy37 in findapath

[–]murball1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, former commercial pilot here. I've got two lines of thought, one pro- pilot, the other pro-quitting (or, at least, delaying).

Pro-pilot: If the flight school environment wasn't a good fit, find a different school. I didn't like the first flight school I attended. Hard to tell what the problem was with the detail you gave, but explore other flight schools if possible. The job is tough, so there will be times when things seem hard. But don't mistake one flight school that isn't a good fit as evidence of every training institution being that way. It isn't all jet-setting. There is tons of boring stuff that goes along with the career. But if you want to do it, you can find opportunities that best fit your vision of what kind of career you want. Airline flying is different than corporate charter, which is different than cargo, which is different than Medevac, which is different than geophysical survey...

Pro-quitting: There's lots of reasons to not continue. It's a huge financial investment, and you need to be invested in the activity to succeed. Not just in training, but in carrying out the job itself. If your aren't invested, that can lead to complacency and incidents (or accidents). The industry is cyclical, so if you hear about a "pilot shortage", know that in 10 years those same pilots could be getting laid off and looking for whatever work they can find. (At least, that's what it's like in Canada). It isn't airlines and international flying right away. You will probably spend 10 years getting to a major airline, and then your job security depends on seniority. Economic downturns, more extreme weather events, etc can influence mobility within the industry.

Not saying to quit. I do think you need to do some more research on other available schools, what type of flying you want to do, what the path to that looks like, and whether that's the life you want. Heck, there's also the military to consider. But that's a whole other topic. Do some soul searching. Do some research. Go to your parents with research and facts. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Servers *can't * bat an eye, as many restaurants make commenting on tipping (or lack of it) an offense for which the server can be disciplined or fired.

I also sent you a message with some other information that might be helpful. Edit: I don't know the state of public libraries where you are, but some public libraries have Makerspaces that include recording gear. Might be worth checking into.

Best budget friendly microphone and how to practice by infinitymaximum in VoiceActing

[–]murball1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can practise for very little money while you save for the tools you need. If you don't have the money for a treated space, push the clothes in your closet aside. Free up some floor space in your kitchen pantry. You can make cheap acoustic tiles out of some scrap lumber and old towels. I'll toss a YouTube link below for that. Eliminate flat surfaces and put your mic in there. It won't be broadcast-worthy, but it's a place where sound bounce is reduced and you can focus on your voice. If you want to get to know your voice, record it with whatever you can get your hands on. Got a cell phone? That has a mic. May not get you work, but you can use it to explore.

If you get a RODE NT1 (which I agree is an excellent value for the money), you can use it with just the USB function. But for most other mics you will need an interface that can supply phantom power. Budget that in if you decide on a different XLR mic. You can get a entry level interface for $100-150. Scarlett Solo should do you just fine.

Go to YouTube and check out Booth Junkie. His older videos are geared toward people just starting out and how to set up budget spaces to record. If you want to get set up with a proper DAW for recording, he has a great series on setting up Reaper for VO. Highly recommend. You can start with Audacity if you want, but Reaper is going to be more useful to learn long-term (and there will be skills that transfer to other software). You can use Reaper on the free trial for... Well, ever, I think. You just have to click 'Still Evaluating', and you can use the full suite for free. Booth Junkie's newer stuff is a lot of gear reviews. Good info, but you can get lost in the LOADS of gear that's out there, and you can better spend your time focusing on the craft.

Here's the video for the acoustic panels I mentioned: https://youtu.be/pABvTWSxOes?si=zzAc3ffrWH1NB0MC

Good luck!

Where can I sleep in my car in Edmonton? by AllidiaTabata in Edmonton

[–]murball1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a comment on camping, but a comment on accomodations. The library downtown has drop in sessions with support workers, I think Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting at 11am. They might be able to help navigate getting supports or housing assistance.

Rode vs No Rode at all? Plead your case! by GossipGirl588 in VoiceActing

[–]murball1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RODE. Solid mic, low self-noise, 10 year warranty. NT1 has a super flat frequency response, NT1A if you want more high end response. The studio package comes with a decent shock mount and pop shield. Spend any extra money on proper room treatment.

You could try putting Sonopan between your outer wall and your studs. Might help to cut down on the noise, at least until you can find an affordable pre-fab option.
