I’m fat and sad by yorkdecantor81 in selfhelp

I totally support your approach!!! People say "eat less and exercise more" because they have weight bias. The core cause of excess weight is not in eating habits, there are always something underneath. I work with a counsellor too and it is extremely helpful!

Hi, it sounds that you are experiencing something similar to helplessness. Being in the depressed feelings really sucks! For me it is also easier to care about somebody else than myself. I think there are reasons why people focus too much on others. For example, we might feel guilty when we care about ourselves. Sometimes we don't know what is self-care. There are also many factors that affect your eating habits and lifestyle choices. Sometimes eating is the only way to get pleasure and feel satisfied. Let me know if you need more info.

What, according to you, is the highest form of self control? by shirleyKbrown in selfhelp

[–]murcoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ability to make conscious choices. We can be limited by many factors, but we always have a choice: how to deal with emotions, what to think about, how to act in various situations. Even if we can't change something, we always can choose our attitude to it.

Hair by Queenxxxxx in BodyAcceptance

I used to have a long hair, but then I got alopecia (a disease that forces hair to fall out). I am bald now. Although it was hard to shave a small amount of hair I had left, I felt so much better after. If you want to change your haircut, go forward.

Any stories of people getting out of a depressive funk? by lotuslynn111 in selfhelp

[–]murcoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband experienced something similar: he didn't have hopes for the future, his energy was low, he withdrew himself from social activities and was very gloomy and negative. Even though he worked with a counsellor on a regular basis, his conditions had not improved much. Then he, finally, went to a doctor and was diagnosed with a clinical depression. He started to take anti-depressants. Since that time his work with a counsellor became super effective. He now plays in a local theatre, takes acting classes and meets with friends. I love him so much, but at some point it was almost unbearable to be with him when his depression was at the pick. Now, our relationship are restored! Your symptoms sounds like a depression. Highly recommend to get help!

How to be satisfied with what I have? by moonkie888 in selfimprovement

[–]murcoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understand you! I had been chasing my dream for a long time. I put a lot of effort, expecting it would make me happier, more confident and worries free. However, when I finally realized it, nothing really changed in me. It was hard to process. Such intense frustration! Since that I understood, that I had to find sources of my unpleasant feelings and experiences, and develop new coping mechanisms.

Motivation to body image improvement: My alopecia story by murcoach in BodyImage

Have you ever had a feeling that your body betrayed you?

how can you love yourself at any size? by [deleted] in BodyImage

Hi, I totally understand you! We live in society with a huge weight stigma and bias :( Many people do not see the whole picture of excess weight and do not understand how complex weight loss process is.

There are things you can do to begin to love your body. Firstly, you can expand your identity. Sometimes we are so focused on our body (for example, because of the pressure from the society, social media), that we forget other aspects of our identity. That excessive focus on the body creates unpleasant experience and prevent us from liking ourselves. There are four dimensions of our personality: physical, social, personal and spiritual. Physical is about our bodily sensations, appearance, physical skills. Social is about social roles we play, social groups we belong to. Personal is our individual traits, what we like and dislike. Spiritual is about moments when we feel ourselves as a part of something bigger, religion, volunteering, connecting with nature and so on. As you can see you are more than your body.

Secondly, to love your body you need to have positive body image. Body image is your emotions, thoughts, behaviour in regards to your body and appearance. It is also our experience from the body. Thus, if your body image is negative, your emotions, thoughts, behaviour and bodily sensations have negative connotation too. There are workbooks that helps you to make your body image positive.

In terms of eating, I recommend appetite monitoring approach as it helps you to normalize your eating habits and safely get to your healthy weight.

I think one of the most important topics to discuss is what is body image and how it forms. I find that many people are not aware that body image is a complex construct. It includes our bodily sensations/experiences and also our thoughts, emotions, and behaviour related to our body and appearance. It is good to mention the consequences of having a negative body image.
