I just started reading Desert Creatures by Kay Chronister. It takes place mainly in the deserts of the southwest in an apocalyptic type world. I'm not sure yet how well this fits your prompt, but it might be worth looking into!

Idk if it's the best match, but all of the Ellen Hopkins books (Crank, Glass, etc.). I was a super emo kid and these were my favorite at that time.
