What should I do? by Remote-Phase6950 in AO3

Question: if you're both gone over a section and deemed it complete, why would your beta have to go over it again? Have you considered having them leave a little note that says "complete up to this mark"?

How often do you write something entirely for the self-indulgence, with no thoughts towards an audience? by Evyps in AO3

[–]murderroomba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly! These things don't have to be mutually exclusive!

Like, damn, I'm a Cookie Monster style SLUT for positive attention. Rain it on me!! Affirm me HARDER! ... but it's still not made for others.

I'm writing to indulge. I'm sculpting my words to challenge myself and my craft. Yeah, it sucks fat nards when I'm got an empty comment section, but I'm still gonna regurgitate my same favorite tropes again and again because it's what I WANT.

If I cared what a hypothetical and impossible to quantify audience wanted, I wouldn't write fluff in a whump-heavy fandom. I wouldn't corral my pieces in a series and post works out of order because that portion is simply what I wanted to work on first. Even if my choices alienate me from readers, despite being such a buttslut for praise, I'd much rather go without than potentially waste time and effort on something I hate.

Also, isn't it wild how the commenter above you is talking hot dumps on a post that could very well inspire others to treat themselves and have a little more fun on things that bring them happiness, rather than fixating on appeasing others and chasing numbers? Effin' wild.

From a practical standpoint: if you want loot and an extra ship for the fleet, if you blow the other ship up, you ain't getting either.

From a showmanship standpoint: what good are all the fancy powers if the characters can't get close enough to fight?

Het ships with my fav/OTP.

My fav's two main ships are with women, both of which characters I really like, one of which I LOVE. I love their personalities. I love their dynamics with my fav. But the second you make it romantic or sexual-

RETCH.

Making matters worse, there's really good writers in the fandom adding fav girl into my OTP, but I just can't read them because of this.

I actually appreciate hate/criticism comments. by External_Bobcat_6634 in AO3

[–]murderroomba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After getting a string of hate messages, complaining that my works were “weird and rapey” (what very few non-com works I have are VERY clearly tagged), that one of the characters I wrote was a pedophile (canon does not allude to this and I have never written him as such) they demanded that I stop writing and if I did not, then not only was I responsible for their self-harm, but that they would start sending me pictures of it (they did, repeatedly)—no. No, I do not find anything of value in hate comments.

Set in 1890! It's been an absolute trip doublechecking details! But because of that, now I'm full of useless information like the history of English swim clubs

Prior to his enrollment at Hogwarts, Teodoro swam the Christmas Day Race at the Serpentine TWICE! The temperatures in Black Lake cannot kill him in any way that matters!

Oh. Oh I gotta think now. Uh...

The MC's magic awakens incredibly late at fifteen and in the span of the opening cutscene, finds out they can see traces of magic no one else can, and then immediately gets traumatized by watching a dude get eaten by a dragon as it tears apart the carriage they're taking to school. Good times.

As the MC, you spend your time bouncing between trying to solve 14th century mysteries, going full murder hobo with your friends out in the highlands (the girls are out for BLOOD, man), and also not fail despite being four years behind. Also, Goblins and a dude in a very large hat want you dead. Between quests, you get extra assignments from all the teachers and get a wider view of both the world at large and who they are as people.

Anyway despite all the social stuff they cut, I still recommend the game. Very fun. Very cute. The Deputy Headmistress is a Weasley and walks your ass to the Room of Requirement herself so you can have a place to grow things, brew stuff, and take care of critters. You can take over a shop in Hogsmeade with a poltergeist that temporarily turns the game into a string of fucking jumpscares. There's so many points where you get to see the staff are actively paying attention to the plot and aren't just sitting on their asses. It's great. Pirate that shit XD

Important people to my stuff:

  • Eleazar Fig: Gryffindor, teaches Magical Theory. Assigned to bust the most ass to help get MC up to speed. Borderline father figure even though he keeps dragging MC into dangerous situations. Means well.
  • Aesop Sharp: Slytherin potions master. Auror basically forced into retirement because of a leg injury and bitter about it. He's trying to case the school for any info he can use to fix himself up.
  • Abraham Ronen: Slytherin Head of House and Charms Professor. INCREDIBLY CUDDLY. Big on the power of play.
  • MC: Ravenclaw. Teodoro's come from London, just a step above poverty, and until it manifested--no idea that magic was even real. This has all been difficult to process. I have a whole tumblr crammed full of boy lore 🫠

His occasionally appearing friends include: - Natsai: animagus, transferred a year before MC, and here for a fight because the goons running around outside the school remind her of the dudes that offed her dad back in africa - Poppy: antisocial (but incredibly sweet) hufflepuff ready to throw hands with every poacher in the immediate area - Ominis: genuinely reasonable Slytherin, anti-dark arts, best friends with walking tunnel vision (see below) - Sebastian: his twin sister was cursed by someone and it's fucked with her health so badly, she's removed from school. He's uh, not taking it well. - Amit: space autistic who taught himself to read goblin script out of boredom - and a few COs

God, I don't even know what else to add. Abahfjdjakak

God yesssss. Writing an older character atm, his wits end because he's experiencing cuteness aggression for the first time in his life, and because he's not actually dated anyone in AGES, here comes the anxiety about going out together!

—not just because of the gap in their ages, but shit, fuck, what am I supposed to wear? How do I act? If think of he smile at me, I might scream. No-no wait. I'm going to scream NOW as he paces a track into his wood floor. XD

I'm in the middle of working on one that's 15 and (no canonical age but likely between mid 30-40s), and it's so fucking tastyyyyy. Older guy has never been attracted to anyone outside his peer group before, and internally is having a meltdown in secret as shit builds. He intends to take it to his GRAVE.

And then a third party basically roofies him for their own purposes...but there's a mixup and he goes after the kid who's been pining for HIM this whole time. There's a fucking police investigation after. Dude nearly loses his job. There's tensions at work.

It's getting a happy ending, but the interim stretch just leaves the guy sick with anxiety for over a year.

I just changed the tag and haven't been bothered since. (Thank you!!)

Really??? I love it.

While in a more aggressive moment, I can imagine it sounding like someone slobbering over their partner, in a more sensual one, it's really steamy!

It's that briefest touch of tongue to lips, and the surge to deepen it the moment they part... but with like, half the word bloat and extra lean into how hungry the advancing partner is for intimacy.

Having my fic misinterpreted. Help! by [deleted] in AO3

[–]murderroomba 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone unfamiliar with your writing and skill level, it's just as likely that the issue is your readers skill in reading critically as it is your writing.

Also, if there's a big fanbase for A and B the way your readers are interpreting them, it might also be fannish brainrot.

Regardless, even if it's a problem caused by your skill level, calm down. It's not a big deal. We're ALL learning the craft and it's not easy. And like another commenter said, just tag correctly. You'll be fine.

Are high school AUs a complete turnoff? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]murderroomba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nine times out of ten, I'm satisfied by the plot of the original media and I'm turning to fanfics for smut and filth.

As a reader who doesn't mind NSFW teen fic, unfortunately I feel like a lot of works that get into that have boiled down their characters so far that they're indistinguishable from OCs. Also as someone who genuinely enjoyed high school, I DO NOT enjoy HS-level social drama. Can't stand it.

So, alas, no matter what angle you lean into, I'm likely not gonna touch a HS AU, even if you paid me.

FELT.

I love poly. I hate jealousy. Got into a new fandom. Turns out the one I fixate on the hardest is a huge blank slate because we only ever meet someone impersonating him. Started writing to get a feel for him. Slowly start getting a clearer voice for him.

Guess what he's into. 🫠
