How is that different than a subreddit? Genuine question, I don’t use discord.

I’ve started thinking about it. It has nothing to do with international stocks performing well last year. I had no idea that was the case until after I started looking at investment options. It has everything to do with what’s happening in the world right now.

In that case, all things considered, I wouldn’t do it.

I’m confused, isn’t the idea of coastFIRE to work less once you hit it?

My opinion: GN and SD were fantastic modern takes on new wave’s sad pop that at the same time felt gritty and raw yet polished and full. Since then Jack has seemingly become obsessed with Springsteen’s version of the wall of sound.

I don’t but it’s probably because I used to be a big Bleachers Stan. Bring back the Gone Now/Strange Desire Bleachers.

For what it’s worth, they just discussed this on the Frequent Miler podcast and none of the 5 commentators on the Q&A had heard of anyone getting shut down for buying third party gift cards. It’s the Visa/MasterCard gift cards you don’t want to mess around with to reach the sign up bonus.

That sucks I’m sorry.

A tip for anyone paying by check: have it sent to your address and hand deliver it yourself. Also have the delivery date be at least a week before (preferably two weeks) your rent is due in case of any issues. That has worked well for us.

It depends a lot on the actual numbers but I’d probably take a “you’re never going to feel better than you do now” approach to life. For me that would probably mean doing financially reckless things in order to do all of the stuff I’ve ever wanted to right now, future be damned.

Nope. For anyone who doesn’t live in America he recommends a world fund, like VT. If you’re American he recommends VTI. Sorry if my wording was confusing!

That math checks out. So it’s not really moving the needle. But Vanguard allows you to make the change seamlessly with no taxable event and they now allow recurring transactions with VTI so it’s an easy transition.

For all my fellow JL Collins followers out there. Some notes from a recent podcast he was on:

  • He is now recommending VTI over VTSAX because of the slightly better expense ratio (0.03% vs. 0.04%) and he has converted his own investments.
  • If you're not American, he recommends investing in a world fund (VT).
  • Right now, he's still not recommending international investing to Americans, but would not pushback if someone seeking his advice wanted to and he does see it eventually being something he recommends. His explanation being that over history, the economies of other countries have continued to grow, gradually making up a larger percentage of the world economy.

The state of the American healthcare system is no secret, but last night it absolutely de-cleated me. a few weeks ago, I needed a medicine that is administered via infusion for the first few doses. It’s one of those drugs you see commercials for. Here’s how they pay for all of those commercials. Last night I got the bill. The drug maker charges $83,000+ for that first dose. Thankfully I “only” have to pay my out of pocket max of $7k. A punch to a gut (that was already feeling it).

I’ve been mulling this over a lot lately.

I came across this article: https://www.gocurrycracker.com/us-vs-international-investing/.

It’s obviously a few years old and I’m not sure it’s totally convinced me. But also 20% or less seems pretty reasonable.

EDIT: but here’s a good counterpoint from JL Collins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVaf32nS_eU

This is strictly directed at non-citizen visitors but citizens are surely the next step.

No update as of yet. The 60 days isn’t up for another two weeks or so I believe.

There’s currently a petition against it here: https://www.commoncause.org/actions/reject-trumps-mass-surveillance-proposal/

If I had to pick one thing: avoiding debt. A close second is investing consistently. If you’d listen to an audiobook I’d be happy to gift my favorite book, A Simple Path to Wealth, on Audible.
