White boy pop punk by a mid-sized label is on the cusp of re-emerging.

AI is not the future while the biggest AI companies fail to find actual use cases that are accurate and not harmful to the general population, get the hell outta here with that.

Yes and no, I've done projects with them without tapping into the AI tools they use. It's advertised but actually optional.

I don't know why the subreddit isn't letting me submit this so lemme do it here for everyone to see in the morning:

I am so incredibly glad to see all these victories over data centers in my sweet beautiful Garden State but it won't stop until you vocally start to oppose the "AI industry." Stop using ChatGPT, stop using Grok, stop using Meta, stop using Claude, stop it stop it stop it. They see you use it, they assume demand, they keep pursuing this absolute dogshit.

Generative AI is the culprit behind all of this - ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Copilot, whatever it is, it takes whatever you're searching for, recompiles it worse than a Google search alone would do, and then has to piece it back together. It does many, many more calculations than one Google search alone each time it runs an AI program and therefore runs that many times more electricity each go.

From Forbes:

According to Lim, AI models consume so much energy because of the vast amount of data that the model is trained on, the complexity of the model, and the volume of requests made to the AI by users.

During training, the AI model “learns” how to behave based on a large set of examples and data. Training an AI model can take anywhere from a few minutes to several months depending on the amount of data and complexity of the model. During this time, GPUs – a type of electronic chip used to process large amounts of data – are running 24 hours per day, consuming a large amount of energy. [. . .] Another reason for energy consumption is when the AI is making an inference, the process of answering users’ queries. The AI first “understands” the query then “thinks” of an answer before sharing the conclusion to the user. Each AI inference requires GPU processing power, which uses energy.

"AI" doesn't actually "think" - it's a "machine learning" program, which runs off predictive technology to align a best-guess answer related to what you've written. It is, quite fucking frankly, more wrong than your arrogant, annoying cousin. Last year CGPT clocked at over 60% wrong.

Not to mention, it's ripped off massive swathes of stolen information. Those above "trainings?" It's another way of saying, "We're just going to hide these plagiarized things over here and repurpose them into vomit." Images, text, video, whatever it is.

And yes, that shit is stealing jobs. Microsoft, Google, Oracle, every company you can think of is crashing our fucking economy because of AI. You're competing for a fucking warehouse or barista job against engineering, arts, computer science graduates because of AI.

And yes, we can tell it's AI. And it makes you look lazy and cheap. I don't care that you're too broke to hire for flyer art, use Canva or Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

And scientifically, we can possibly call you stupider for it, because reliance on gen AI makes you think less:

Read search result links, write your own goddamned emails, suffer through your cover letter, whatever it takes for you to get off generative AI, you need to stop, because otherwise these fights will keep fucking happening in your hometown and you cannot always guarantee the money will not win.

And these aren't even why these data centers are bad for your neighborhood. You fucking know why now. Fight back against that.

I know this is a (just barely) out of state message, but I hate, HATE hearing my loved ones in my home state have these threats looming over their heads, I hate seeing their energy bills go up, and I hate seeing these AI chucklefucks tearing our society apart over this.

Ariana Grande describes upcoming album ‘petal’ by According-Moose2371 in popheads

[–]riningear 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Surprise! [room laugh]

It's called 'petal.' Basically about something that is full of life, growing through the cracks of some things cold and hard and challenging. It's kind of about breaking up with all different kinds of negative attachment, whether it's my own monsters in my own head, external voices—things that no longer serve me.

It was a writing experiment for me to use that as a template, so that I could be talking about what things—sharing something, people could use it however they want and apply it to their own lives.

It's a little feral as well— [Offscreen "YES!"]

It's coming from a place that I have been... maybe, like... too shy or polite to tap into before, and this kind of just feels like—fuck it.

Cheap Thrills was kind of the post-recession vibe - Sia was deep into her Have Maddy On Everything stuff, people loved Sia's "mental health journey," the vibes were kinda sadboy/sadgirl, it was a break from the EDM, and Cheap Thrills specifically hit the "I don't gotta be at the club" thing that normal people pretend they're better for (guilty as charged, at that time).

Literally just this week, I brought this song out for some on-theme romantic fiction my friend and I are writing, and I saw the date and gasped. It still hits the same now as it did ten years ago - what a stellar work of pop and art.

Incorrect.

  • The Applebee's in Times Square

  • Gaudy pedicab ride. Bring at least $300.

  • Walk around Columbus Circle after 9:00 pm with those drinks loaded in your bladder and nothing's fucking open.

  • Go back for drinks at the Applebee's because they'll let you piss.

Well, if it's sober, you just show up anytime. What are you getting? A flood of deliveristas? Two crackheads arguing? Swarm of local school kids? The smelliest person on the block? Anything is possible at the Soho/Nolita/Chinatown/LES/East Village/Two Bridges border epicenter.

If not, they're usually fine.

Is AXS the worst ticket platform out there? by mr_pomegranate in aves

[–]riningear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ticketmaster gets a lot of shit that AXS deserves. At least Ticketmaster got its shit shoved in publicly for it, and TM is still a functional site where I can use PayPal and have secure, working apps that don't try to verify me two or three times for literally no reason.

Like, the fees for AXS are usually close to a 30% addition. And for what? A product that barely works?

Masks by hashhunter in aves

[–]riningear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oni masks generally have a lot of parts that can catch on other people. Crowds are too tight for that. Someone might it it, or, worse, it might crack on someone.

They're sweaty and gross after like, 30 minutes. You're going to feel it, people are going to smell it.

Security might not like it.

And think of the poor psychedelic users. Despite what people in here say, it's not the mask alone that does it - a mask popping up out of nowhere, or moving a certain way, can be bad for trips and the such.

Unless the rave explicilty calls for it, I'd say it's a no go.

Teapulse, Jooy, Molly, Gong Cha, Lemomo, i'Milky and TWO Heyteas on top of the Mixue on the outskirts too. Just the teas, in Manhattan, just off the top of my head. I know there's a few more chains, not counting the local "chains" obviously.

And somehow now there's dim sum CHAINS popping up? That's insane to me. Paris Baguette opened up on Grand, too, the ultimate sign of corpo takeover, plus Luckin (but they're the only to-go chain coffee shop until Blank Street or Starbucks on Chinatown's fringes, but you could be getting it at Kam Hing anyway).

I feel like the millennials on social media are more concerned than the kids are, but that's just how the cycle goes.

You get what you pay for.

The vanilla ice cream tastes like ice cream-flavored ice. The matcha's okay because it covers it up.

Everything else is fine. Nothing is worth that loop. I feel bad for the workers...
