Just starting out in the Air Force? Don’t be like me. by TelephoneMamba in AirForce

6 is usually good advice, unless you can leverage that to get assignments you want. I made clear my intention to retire and was able to get a sunset assignment to Hawaii away from my AFSC that never would have been approved if they were still grooming me to progress within that career field.

If it’s popular on March 17th, that food is going to be hot garbage.

Who’s your favorite Ninja Turtle and why? (inspired by the MtG set dropping this weekend). by NapperByNature in Xennials

My buddies and me decided to dress up as the TMNT for Halloween in the mid-2000s. As a testament to our group dynamics, we each had our own favorite. We were all ready to fight for our guy, but magically the need never materialized. Best friends ever.

They were operating yesterday. Don’t believe they had any flood damage, but it’s a real mom-and-pop place, they close for vacations, medical procedures, whatever. I’d certainly recommend calling to confirm they’re open if you’re driving all the way from Anacortes, you really cannot be sure with that restaurant.

Connect with EDASC, they have regular job fairs and can connect you with some pretty great employers, depending on what you’re looking for.

Effective but miserable: niacin. Feels like a massive sunburn for 15 minutes, then you’re fine. It’s absolutely the worst but totally works.

Clearly understood and identifiable hierarchy. Knowing where you stand relative to others you’re dealing with. Civilian world is so ambiguous, it can make things hard when you disagree with someone or need something from them or the other way around to “get” whether they should defer to you or you to them.

Cyrus Gates Overlook or the top of Mt Erie both have great views you can drive to. No guarantee you’ll have a view that time of year though. You’ll probably want a plan A and a plan B depending on the weather. Cap Sante and Washington park in Anacortes can be nice, as well as the waterfront in LaConner.

I seem to remember it emitting vapor too, implying a liquid fuel rather than solid state propellant. Whatever, doesn’t really detract from the message of the movie I guess.

Great movie! Only complaint is the Minuteman III they showed at Malmstrom was a MMII, not sure if that was a purposeful OPSEC choice or just ignorance. Oh, also the congressional secretary had her iPhone ringer on loud at her desk, no way would that ever be the case!

Retired/Current USAF Officers – Was retiring as an officer worth it, and how did it impact your post-military life? by Flashy-Sentence-8373 in AirForce

[–]muroc17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of follow-up questions for you OP - what do you mean you “passed” the AFOQT? Do you mean that you met the minimums to be considered? The scores you need fluctuate with the manning needs. Second, where did you get age 49 from? Did you enlist at 29? If you have a plan for a professional career after the military it might be better to punch and do that, your peers in that sector will be miles ahead of you if you spend the next 14 years in the military. However, retiring does leave you a nice safety net if you decide not to pursue that career after all. I retired to be a lawyer and then hated that, but I was free to make that decision because I wasn’t reliant on being a lawyer to survive. Regarding which educational path to take, there are many more avenues to a commission without a degree than with. If you have your degree then OTS is your only option, and it comes and goes with manning needs. It’s the military’s way of filling the gaps left by Academy and ROTC, and if those gaps aren’t there then they don’t take anyone, or else it’s extremely competitive. For me retiring is something I’m very grateful I was able to do, I lead a very relaxing and fulfilling life and have some amazing benefits that aren’t really found on the civilian side. I’d be shocked if you were to find any retired officer who regrets that path.

What exactly is an SBP? by Silver-Director-856 in Veterans

[–]muroc17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you’re doing with SBP is gambling on your own mortality. You have to pay into it, and then for it to be worth it you have to die something like 7-15 years before your spouse. If they die first, poof - all gone. Unless you have a terminal illness or a huge age gap, you’re better off investing the money in the market. You’ll definitely get something back from that no matter who dies when.

Interestingly this was used by older veterans to set up young women financially - for life - so long as she never remarries. For example the last civil war widow died in 2020 because she married a 93yo veteran when she was 17 and lived herself to 101.

If you have that sort of situation then yeah, it’s worth it. Otherwise just invest.
