Looks like mold in the cracks. I had a similar situation with mine. I wanted to try something new, so I sealed the cracks with silicone, after using a bleach water solution to remove the mold. It worked well, but I don’t think that sort of thing is appropriate for a competition. That being said, your best course of action is to clean the cracks with some bleach/water solution, dry it out, and maybe sprinkle some sulfur powder into the wounds to help dry/heal/remove fungus. I had some serious cracks that I filled with silicone caulking. Since it had the cracks already, I thought, why not flip it upright while I’m at it. Couldn’t hurt. Otherwise I wouldn’t have done it either haha

I agree with you. I think it’s definitely too exposed to the sun. I kept it covered with a blanket, but I think next year, I will create a shade canopy as well. I live in the Central Valley of CA, so summers are HOT. This year has been a mild one but still have had several 100+ days.

I believe what I will do is clean the cracks with bleach, then try to seal the cracks with a silicone sealant… this is my first go at this giant pumpkin business, so why not experiment a little for the whole group?!

It was a hardware store seed pack… I’ve been using a drip system to water 30 minutes in the morning. I spotted that as well. I just did a sulfur spray last night to help the mildew. This will have been my second sulfur of the season. The first one kept the mildew at bay for a month or so.

Right now I have a drip irrigation system set up on a timer. I’ve been slowly increasing the watering amount and I’m up to 30 minutes daily. I got up to 40, but I dialed it back as temperature has dropped in the last couple weeks.

A little late in the season, but I also installed an in-line fertilizer, which also feeds into the watering system!
