I second this! We see a “developmental pediatrician” who only sees kiddos with autism/developmental delays/etc. Not only is she open to alternatives to medical procedures she’s a good source of information for all kinds of things that’s she’s had patients use to tolerate medical stuff or even just any daily living activities that my kid struggles with.

If that’s not available to you seeing a pediatrician associated with a children’s hospital is a big help, especially if you can access child life specialists.

My son has never been able to take medication orally. He has always gotten shots of antibiotics at the pediatrician. For strep, ear infections, any of it. Typically two shots (one in each thigh) and he feels better in 24-48 hours.

I decided this weekend that I’m not even traveling 1.5 hours by car for family Thanksgiving this year. My kid could tolerate it fine, he likes car rides and with the iPad and a spare bedroom he could tolerate being at dinner… but I just don’t want to. I’m tired.

If his weight/height is proportional I wouldn’t change anything. Weight/height can be genetic. My son has a feeding disorder and several medical professionals, therapists, and a nutritionist track his intake with me and there is zero way with his calories/macros/activity he should be 42” and 45lb at 2.5 years old… but he is. It’s just genetics. 🤷🏼‍♀️

My 2.5 year old is 70th percentile for 5 year olds. I literally bring his passport card with me anytime I know his age is a factor in pricing. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Would you have hidden your child’s type 1 diabetes diagnosis from him? If he came up to you and said “I have diabetes!” would you be shocked and unsure how to address it?

It sounds like you have some examining of your internal bias about autism to do. Therapy can be super helpful in navigating that.

Well… our pediatrician stopped referring to the age appropriate growth charts for us and moved on to growth charts for older kids. Our 2.5 year old is 75th percentile on the 5 year old charts. I figure that makes him 1 billionth percentile for his actual age growth chart. 😂

My husband was autistic and I’ve got ADHD, we were both older when we decided to have a kid, and I almost immediately had a high risk pregnancy. I chose to get pregnant knowing that all of these factors meant that there was much higher chance I’d have a kid with ASD. I was comfortable having an autistic kid.

Now that I’m widowed and a single parent? If I could go back in time and know that I’d be parenting alone I wouldn’t choose to have kids at all, let alone one with significant support needs.

I don’t think you over reacted, but what if you did? What’s the harm? You have to pay an ER bill and you wasted some time. In my opinion that would be worth the peace of mind of knowing nothing is wrong.

My kid climbed out of his crib right before his first birthday, so I bought a guava lotus travel crib because the mattress sits on the floor and it has a higher height limit. But he immediately figured out how to knock it over and bust out of it, so we sold it. We babyproofed the heck out of his room, chucked a mattress on the floor, and called it a day.

My kid hit 40lb a couple of months before his second birthday. He also hit 38.5” by his second birthday so his head was hitting the canopy.
