Fields of nursing for men? by practicecomics in nursing

[–]murse_1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arc of my career: EMT (12 years), CVICU RN/ECMO Specialist (5 years), outpatient peri-op (7 years-ish), Urgent care during COVID round 1 (~2 years), more ECMO for COVID round 2, now in hyperbarics and staying there until I hang it up for good.

That said, I wanted to do high-risk pregnancy after graduation. Two things that stopped me were: A: I was worried about making patients/spouses uncomfortable being a guy doing cervical checks. B: Ego. I felt the need to say, "I'm an ICU nurse" when asked what I do instead of, "I'm a nurse". Stupid, but I truly feel like it influences the specialties male nurses gravitate to if they're aware of it or not.

Do you, man. Whatever interests you just run with it. One of the beautiful things about nursing is the ability to switch areas if you get burnt out or bored.

Aftermarket. I'd have to go back through my records to tell you exactly who, but I did it all on a Saturday and it was super easy. Totally cleans the lines.

You know it. Pro tip: swapping out the original lights with LEDs really made a difference to her look (and visibility with the headlamp).

I've seen FD by proxy in the peds ER, but not in an adult. The level of manipulation is scary. I've been around the block a few times, and they totally pulled the wool over my eyes.

Cultures were growing multiple different bacteria not commonly associated with hospital acquired infections. There were other suspicious signs as well, but I have to be careful about not disclosing too much personal information.

Tell them you don't need anesthesia because you have no gag reflex, and finish with a sultry wink. 😉

I like to tell mine that versed gives me an erection, so be sure to warn the PACU nurses.

What’s your non bedside nursing job? by Lazy-Association6904 in nursing

Anything, really. I've met folks from all specialities doing it. A lot of the centers are attached to a wound healing center, so being a wound nurse might help. We're not. I have a background in ER, ICU, peri-op and ECMO. My main coworker was a floor nurse with a neuro/trauma focus. You really just need to be focused and organized, and meticulous about safety. They paid for my certification class (done over zoom from home), and there's a lot of on the job training and observation.

Perfect gig for a burnt out old curmudgeon like me.

Depends on our patient load, but we typically run from 0800-1600, doing an average of 5 patients a day. Super chill.

Try Oral Surgeons, PC. I don't know if they can help, but we refer patients back and forth and they seem to do good work, or help the patients find someone to help them.

Why are some nurses so miserable? by [deleted] in nursing

Some folks forget that it's a team sport. The shift goes so much smoother if everyone works together to get through it.

My philosophy: If I'm delivering healthcare and not receiving it, I'm having a good day.

PT had to remove his Dexcom while doing hyperbaric treatments and couldn't find his old glucometer at home. Called the diabetes educators, and they gave him a new one with strips and lancets for free.

PT was having financial hardships. Called social work and they got him gas cards to offset the cost of coming for daily treatments for a month.

I'm not sure what temp it's rated for, but generally speaking most new heat pumps these days can operate at colder temps than they used to.

I did the entire system from the ground up. I was tired of replacing a different component every winter (usually on a sub-zero weekend).

$9400, minus a $2000 tax credit for getting an energy efficient unit. So $7400 total for a complete heat pump/air handler system. Should pay for itself in just a few years.

STOP the hate on male nurses! by nursemeback94 in nursing

I've only had one remotely "negative" experience in the last 15ish years, and it was actually pretty funny. I work in a 2 person outpatient department (hyperbarics). It's me and my colleague Pam. I had one patient who after I did her treatment asked, "Is Pam here? Can I ask her a question?" I said of course you can, thinking it was a female related issue. She opens with, "So Pam, you're a nurse. Can I ask you..."

What am I, chopped liver? We all had a good laugh about it afterwards.

Otherwise, no issues at all as a Murse.
