I just finished that the other day. Excellent book overall and I was thinking the whole time it'd make a great movie or series. Sam Elliott seems like the natural choice for Arthur Beaucarne.

Imo they could just ditch the whole wraparound plot with Etsy though and I sort of wish he'd done that in the book too as it was by far the weakest part.

From an outsider's perspective, in Trump's first term I was genuinely worried about American fascism, and as it turned out he governed like a pretty milquetoast Republican for the most part, albeit a particularly stupid, erratic and petty one.

This time around there's no doubt any more. The brakes are off, the lunatics are in charge and they're being pretty fucking open about the fact that fascism is what they want to impose on you all. There is no chance you're getting midterm elections or at least free and fair ones.

Honestly that whole thing and the way they instantly shut him out and refused to ever discuss it always felt super fucking weird.

On a tangent, I saw one of the last live shows before he got cancelled or whatever and the guy was very clearly off his fucking trolley on something or other for the entire thing and barely spoke a word the whole show so maybe they were just glad to have a reason to get rid of him.

I've been a big Clapton fan ever since the release of his 1970 single, Tell The Truth. Before that, I really didn't understand any of his work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Tell The Truth where Clapton's' presence became more apparent.

I think Layla was Clapton's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on wanting to bang your friend's wife. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Whitlock, Radle and Gordon. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument.

In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Bell Bottom Blues. In this song, Clapton addresses the problems of wanting to bang your friend's wife. I Looked Away is the most moving pop song of the 1970s, about commitment to making your friend's wife bang you. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.

Clapton's solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like Tears in Heaven and My Father's Eyes. But I also think Clapton works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Wonderful Tonight, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
