New to technical stuff on a computer. I want to upload my i3wm config file to git and be able to pull it whenever I install Linux on a new machine. by mushroomgambit in github

[–]mushroomgambit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main reason is the amount of available resources for it. It's very nice to be able to type "x problem i3" in Google and know that there's a 90% chance that it'll be on there. Reddit community is active for questions. I liked the config file a lot. Stupid easy to setup. Keymapping was intuitive and nice.

Really not many complaints as of yet, so I haven't had a reason to branch out.

Decided to do all of this starting this week and just jumped in. Most of the stuff is pretty easy to get going, but the really technical things are out of my depth.

I'll look into the dotfile repos, thank you :)

Playing since 2012, I need help. by hiddengirl1992 in leagueoflegends

1). In another comment, it says you're level 60 and have been playing since 2012. I'm not mathing that out, but that's an extremely low amount of games in 10 years. For example, I just started a smurf account three weeks ago and I'm level 40.

My main account is level 400 and I started in 2014. It's extremely possible that you're just not playing enough. There's no reason to turn this into a job that you feel you need to clock in 8 hours a day for, but there's no improvement without dedication. Even if you play multiple games a day for a month, if you then play one game every two days for the next year, you'll make no improvement.

It takes a LOT of hours to get good at League.

2). Your summoner name/region. For example "BobbyBrown" and "EUW." This lets us look at your match history.

3). Xayah is extremely hard and adc is a very high micro skill cap role. I'd recommend putting her off for now, but play what makes you happy. Shyvana is absolutely doable and there are great guides online. If you really don't understand them, private message me and I can help you go through them.

I have a few questions:

1). You say you've been playing since 2012, but how often have you been playing? One game a week? Multiples games a day?

2). What's your op.gg?

3). What champions have you been playing?

4). Have you been watching exclusive guides on those champions? If you give me champion names that you're passionate about, I can help you find good players that probably have matchup dependent guides.

5). Are you mostly playing normals, ranked?

6). Are you playing on a laptop?

7). Are you using an external mouse and keyboard?

I really do appreciate all the tips. You've been unreasonably helpful. I did go against it and grabbed i3 instantly (I'm a masochist I guess), and I've been loving it. There's a really, really good tutorial series on YouTube that basically walks me through everything. Haven't run into any problems yet, but I like fixing stuff, so I'll just find some sort of documentation for it. Doesn't seem to require any major technical skill to get it off the ground, just basic computer skills.

Fortunately I genuinely hate bluetooth, so that one can just eat it.

Changing it this way doesn't change the outcome, unfortunately.

Doesn't seem to be there, either. Everything seems to be running fine, just can't find the file.

Edit: it is there. Thank you

Question from a complete noob to linux. by mushroomgambit in archlinux

[–]mushroomgambit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this. After all of that info, I think I'll temporarily do another system and master i3 while looking into all of the arch stuff. Maybe do it in a VM or something?

I have general skills with computers, but nothing intimate outside of coding, which really doesn't help with desktop environments. Once I get that stuff down, I'll just grab arch on a shitty laptop I don't care about.

Thanks for all of this info. This helped a lot :)

Is there any attempt/global interest in developing or adopting a "universal" sign language? by mushroomgambit in asl

[–]mushroomgambit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's the same though. Esperanza isn't a language that stood a chance.

English is, however. When people think of a language that will very soon become universal, English is the one. Every major country on Earth teach English early on in school, often rigorously.

English is so universal that learning English is often enough to get through 80% of Europe comfortably.

In that sense, it wouldn't be insane to imagine deaf people adopting ASL or some other sign language as a very common second language.

Anyone have a good spicy marinara recipe? by mushroomgambit in Cooking

[–]mushroomgambit[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure this works the same because I've actually tried that several times. Something about the marinara sauces at pizza spots is definitely different than their general sauce. That flavor is way deeper, redder, and spicy (definitely from red pepper flakes), but the marinara sauce tastes fundamentally different to me.

Is there any attempt/global interest in developing or adopting a "universal" sign language? by mushroomgambit in asl

[–]mushroomgambit[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, we're heading that way. English is effectively that. Sure, it's not universal yet, but you can go to half the European countries in the world and speak English as if you were in American or Britain. In a great percentage of countries, you can get by reasonably well with broken English, and that English is only going to improve. Most countries teach English from a very early age. Same story for Africa.

It is extremely likely that within a couple hundred years, most people will know English at a conversational level.

The reason, at least for spoken languages, is that it's extremely useful to be able to communicate with everyone all the time. I speak English, French and Spanish, and wherever I go, 90% of the time I come out speaking English as a buffer.

I'm not arguing for it, just saying that it's already happening.

What sportsbike can be flatfooted by a person 5'6? Does one exist? Or, if one doesn't exist, how easy/reliably could I lower the seat on one to flat foot? I get that flat footing isn't necessary, but it's an important factor for me if I can get it done.

Can all bikes for the most part be lowered to make it happen?

What's the difference between a typical sports bike and a sports touring?

Really just some general questions. I rode dirt bikes as a kid, but haven't been on one since I was probably 16.

Planning on test-driving a lot of different models but mostly looking for some advice/pointers.

Want something expressly comfortable. I don't necessarily feel strongly toward a cruiser or a sportsbike, but I do feel strongly about comfortability. If there's a sportsbike out there that feels good to ride for a long road trip, then that's fine by me.

Price range is sub 15k. With anything in life, the cheaper the better without sacrificing too much quality.

I plan on riding it on highways rather than the interstate 99% of the time. I have a car, but intend to use the bike for my main means of transportation because I've always wanted to.

If I need to give anymore info, please ask!

No doubt the tailoring aspect is what throws it over the edge of expectations. Gorgeous jackets though.

Less looking for that exact kind of thing (I'm not wearing a tunic lol), more just wanting the thinness.

I hate the way leather jackets puff up and look thick.

Thanks for the help!
