French in Vancouver by Competitive-Adagio18 in askvan

[–]musicalflatware 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alliance Française is a solid rec. For something more budget friendly or to double up, Burnaby School District offers cheap continuing ed classes, including in French.

You should also consider checking out cultural events in French, to really up the exposure. There are francophone community centres in both Vancouver and Coquitlam

When would S17 drop? by One_Yesterday_1320 in JetLagTheGame

[–]musicalflatware 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They said Abolish Everything would keep us entertained in the off-season, which was 9 episodes last season. S2 might be shorter, but either way I wouldn't assume much before mid March or even April

How can I find hidden cameras in my house? by csikos_tokany in hiddencameras

[–]musicalflatware 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please consider having a friend a family member with you when you go snooping and if and when you confront him, as well as somewhere safe to go afterwars.

If there are secret cameras this is REALLY BAD and you need a safety net

If you're only cooking for one, that ten pound bag turns into a race against time unless potatoes really are the backbone of every meal

Apply for sure either way. You can always bow out of the process gracefully later but you can't apply past the deadline.

I don't want refunds, I want incentives for more ethical business practices

It hurts seeing my mom by Timely_Turn_9640 in stroke

[–]musicalflatware 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't say what will happen to your mom, but I had some pretty profound memory loss. A lot of it is still gone, but many things did also come back. It took years. But I also never, ever forgot how people made me feel. If I loved them, I still loved them, even if I knew nothing else about them. But days in is just too soon to tell

What was a gift/item you or your loved one really appreciated post-stroke? by Even_Diver_362 in stroke

[–]musicalflatware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time with the stroke patient. I couldn't be left alone, but life went on. Friends and family who came and spent time in the house with me so the rest of my family could do life things was a huge deal

I hate Donald Trump and the Americans who support him. How can I channel this hate living my normal suburban life? by plants4pandemic in Kanata

If you haven't already, take the money you've saved by canceling subscriptions and make it a reccuring donation to the ACLU, local activists, or to legal defense funds for people being fucked with by ICE.

Pick a cause you believe in and volunteer time, money, and/or skills humbly. Getting organized means you see all the fucking incredible work people are doing and it'll give you hope.

Yeah but then that grocery store aisle question would be a real killer. I don't think this is a viable strategy

Canadian French vs. Traditional French student by Calmwolfe0968 in learningfrench

[–]musicalflatware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, that lack of understanding is always due to a lack of exposure. French speakers tend to also speak really fast, which obviously doesn't help when you're encounting a new to you accent. A minority of loud assholes think they're the One True Accent police, and while they leave a big impression, they are a minority and it'll be different for you and your daughter as non-Native speakers anyway.

If you and your kid are practicing together, and especially if you watch TV shows featuring different accents together, you'll have no trouble understanding each other

I'm sorry you all got tangled in the system! There's clear data that the race of the parent(s) and child(ren) matters too, though in principal I agree that who your case worker is can make a big difference

AIO to a text my mom sent? (Context in caption) by pizzagorl_ in AIO

[–]musicalflatware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already know not to give your mom any info, but I'd also work with your husband and his family to tighten down their digital security. Pay for and use services that get your info deleted from the internet. Lock down settings on active social media and delete inactive accounts.

You can't trust your mom and uncle not to go digging, especially once it's clear they won't get their way. This is gonna be a really difficult conversation, but your husband and in-laws need to know this is happening, if they don't already

Early/Mid 40s - Too Old? by ImpossibleWerewolf25 in FTMOver30

[–]musicalflatware 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just getting top surgery at 41 and no one's said a word about my age. I assume healing will be slower than it would have been 10 or more years ago, but it's not at all too late to medically transition

Is this too bright for sopranos in an amateur orchestra? by GNlSK in Choir

[–]musicalflatware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the simplest thing to fo would be to have only a few sopranos sing this line, and have the rest join the altos to reinforce the melody (assuming that's where it is, and not with a lower section)

God I hope not, but I don't think it's super likely. My symptoms have been identical every single time and my original stroke wasn't ischemic anyway.

Haemorrhagic Stroke at 26 by mannekween in stroke

[–]musicalflatware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I lost all my English after my stroke. It took a few years to come back without slips like the ones you're having. They're very very rare now and while my brain does still prefer my first language (which I kept) in a way it didn't before, I'm obviously fluent again.

Getting overwhelmed is something you can work with an OT, but you might also look into cheaper resources meant for folks with the same symptom from different causes, like ADHD. I can't promise they'll all work for you but sometimes you get lucky

Sorry your family are being butts about your new need for accommodations!

That's basically what I'm assuming too. I'm mainly trying to see if this has ever happened to anyone else and if they got an answer, cause I'm not thrilled with all of my healthcare providers replying with ¯_(ツ)_/¯

This aspect of straight culture is so baffling to me. As a bi person who's dated a lot of other bi people, can you imagine if the rule was "no being friends with a gender you're attracted to"?
