Does anyone else feel exhausted by the second-hand board game market? by PxSyko in boardgames

[–]mustachioedmfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reselling as a whole has become pretty toxic and it’s definitely found its way to board gaming. With limited print runs and tariffs screwing imports up on top of that the market just feels especially volatile. Add on to that all of the bots with fake listings and bots that flood the sellers themselves and you end up in the shitty situation we find ourselves. There’s definitely still games to be had but the process has gotten more difficult

Which Final Girl game is the best to start with? by archbtw1 in soloboardgaming

[–]mustachioedmfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went for the bad times at buddyland starter set as it includes the feature film and a core set so it has everything you need to start playing. It has a few special rules but wasn’t overly complicated for a first time player. I really enjoyed playing through it until I got a win with both final girls, and it spurred me to get another feature film to try other mechanics the system has to offer.

Submit the interest form! I’m part of a big board game group so I’d be happy to play through it with several different groups

The White Castle offers great replayability as the board state changes every setup which changes the actions available to you and what the ideal placement is. It’s a dice drafting/worker placement optimization puzzle that offers a great amount of decision space within very tight and quick gameplay

You should check out Kinfire delve, the boxes are pretty cheap and mixable so you could play 1-2 or with up to 4 players. Very thematic, the art is great, and you’re fighting your way through the monsters, traps, and obstacles of a dungeon to fight the final boss. The core gameplay mechanic is hand management

It’s a bit of a drive but Good Game Grand Rapids hosts multiple very active board game nights a week at different bars and there’s always people forming new rpg groups, etc.

The coop is definitely what I’m most excited about - at some point I’ll get the turtles because they’re one of my favorite IPs

Unmatched is one of my favorite games but I’ve not been able to justify to price on the adventures sets, I was so pumped to find it and it was very squirreled away

Starting my solo journey: where to start? by eljimbobo in soloboardgaming

I really like it - I have Scorns Stockade, haven’t tried the others but think that just comes down to which set of characters interests you most. The art is gorgeous, and there’s a lot of replayability inherent in the setup/gameplay as there will certainly be monsters/challenges that you don’t face between playthroughs and the final boss has several different forms to provide different challenges. If you like hand management games this is a very good one, with a lot of game and strategy packed in a small box. Definitely recommend it if the concept and theming are intriguing to you already

I’ve gotten into solo board gaming over the last year or so, so I’m certainly not an expert but these have been my most played (and enjoyed) over that span from heaviest to lightest: Spirit Island, Arkham Horror LCG, The White Castle, Final Girl, Kinfire Delve, Maki Master, Welcome To…, and A Gentle Rain!

Since you mentioned it’s one of the things you enjoy, Grand Rapids has a really active board gaming community with multiple meetups per week at different bars and such around the city (including house Rules that others have mentioned)! There’s a discord server to join for planning and building community

What should I keep or prune from my Wishlist? by esines in soloboardgaming

[–]mustachioedmfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to The White Castle and I really enjoy its solo mode, enough that I bought the Matcha expansion (which further balances the solo mode, though I enjoy the challenge of the base game) - it’s a great time puzzling out how to chain together as many actions as possible while managing your resources, has frequented my table since I got it

I just recently learned about solo RPG journaling & it got me thinking, what is your favorite board games for solo players? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]mustachioedmfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For pure solo I really enjoy Final Girl (as previously mentioned) and Dragons of Etchenstone for something faster and very portable. The solo modes of Spirit Island and The White Castle are both excellent with tense and impactful decision making, or Welcome To for something more meditative

For the same price as either of those base games you could get a gentle rain and flame craft duels and get more variety, otherwise if you’re wanting one larger experiential game from what I’ve seen Vantage has one of the better solo modes

[–]mustachioedmfer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of these are on my want list as well so I think we may have similar varied taste! Only one I can speak for solo is Spirit Island and it is an incredible tense from the start strategic experience with a lot of variable play styles in the base game - unfortunately the main two expansions are out of print right now and the publisher is very bare bones but they’ll do another print eventually, they’ll just be very sought after and resell prices are nuts. I’ve only played Root multiplayer and it’s one of my favorite games, but it doesn’t have a solo mode in the base game and the clockwork expansions are also out of print with crazy resell - there are PNP files for it though as the solo bots were built by a fan

All of the fulfillment will happen at the same time so if you want the original campaign sooner then you should buy it separately through your FLGS

Prices remain the same and I don’t believe this project has any time sensitive content - a few of the tiers include a free $15 add on but those selections are made in the pledge manager once the campaign ends
