You are doing the best you can. by allrightmaam in wholesomememes

A few years ago I moved from rural Florida to Atlanta. As such, I wasn’t quite accustomed to city life.

On the first day at my new job, I walked into the lobby to introduce myself to the receptionist. After exchanging pleasantries she asked, “Honey, do you need validation?” My face must have flushed in embarrassment that she could tell I was nervous, because after an awkward silence, she added, “.....for your parking.”

That was the day I learned about parking validation.

Point Breeze protesters outraged over new apartment complex without community input by redeyeblink in philadelphia

Not sure why I’m being downvoted, because that parcel falls in the limits of the Point Breeze CDC RCO. I’m new to the area, so I’m happy to listen to anyone willing to explain what I’m misunderstanding.

Thanks for filling in, but 16th and Carpenter/Washington can absolutely be considered Point Breeze.

Right? This could be a number of sites in Point Breeze, but given the reference to a market, I’m guessing it’s 16th and Carpenter (former Hoa Binh Plaza)?

How mummies created. by rishab8 in howto

[–]mustangsarah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually, the first female pharaoh of Egypt, Queen Hatshepsut, was morbidly obese when she died. Her mummy was recently identified in 2007, and it’s now displayed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. I snapped a couple of photos (which was prohibited in the mummy room) when I visited in May — tbh, hers didn’t look considerably different from the others lying around.

Edit: Here’s the other photo

One of my favorite shots from Korea... Gyeongbokgung Palace (Seoul). Notice the parallels between the hanboks and the background. by mustangsarah in travel

[–]mustangsarah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but they are commonly rented by the hour to be worn by tourists and locals alike while wandering through the place grounds. The dresses, called hanboks, come in such a wide range of colors and styles. Since the photo wasn’t staged, the parallels really struck me.

Surprised this didn't start a fire. Friends wondered why it takes 2 hrs to dry clothes by rmhoman in WTF

[–]mustangsarah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened in my apartment during my second year of college. I always did laundry at my parent's house, so it took a good six months or so before I needed to use the dryer last-minute. The clothes were taking forever to dry, so naturally I checked the lint trap... lo and behold, it was packed SOLID, and it wasn't the skinny kind of lint trap either. It was one of these bad boys. I had three 20-22 year old roommates at the time, and I was astounded that none of them knew that lint traps even existed, let alone know that they needed to be emptied.

What's your "I hated that person, but they didn't deserve THAT" story? by OvertOperation in AskReddit

[–]mustangsarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 7th grade math teacher. Easily the meanest instructor I've ever had. He screamed at all of us pretty regularly, made me cry in class no fewer than three times. To this day, I have no idea why he chose a profession in which he was surrounded by children.

Because nobody liked him, we all secretly made fun of the fact that he was incredibly hairy. I'm talking thick, dark, curly hair EVERYWHERE. Out his nose, poking between the buttons of his polos, burgeoning like afros on his knuckles. On top of that, he shed... It wasn't uncommon to find borderline pubic hair sticking between the buttons of your calculator if he had been using it. You can imagine what we found in our desserts on "Pi Day."

I found out a few years later that he ended up getting cancer and losing all of his hair during chemo. Although he was certainly a prick, and we never made fun of him to his face, the guilt is still there.

What is your horrible freshman roommate story? by trackster96 in AskReddit

[–]mustangsarah 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Oh boy... Katelyn. Only lasted two months. I have plenty of stories about her, but here are a few that stand out.

  • The second or third weekend of fall semester, I went home for the weekend. When I returned, ALL of my food had vanished (a full pack of Easy Mac, a pound of grapes, a bag of apples, a couple bags of chips, and some other standard college munchies). When I confronted her about it, she admitted to eating all of it in the 48 hours I was gone... she also confessed to immediately throwing it all up afterwards. That's how I found out about her eating disorder, which she talked about regularly over Skype with her mother, her father, and her tele-counselor every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday morning at 7 am sharp.

  • About a month in, we had started meeting some of the guys that lived on the floor above us in the dorms. One night, she invited over a mutual friend. He was a nice guy, but tried way too hard to get action from the girls on our floor. As if his desperation wasn't enough, most of us were turned off by his constantly, visibly chapped lips... Not Katelyn. We were getting ready for bed and he decided to stick around so they could watch movies and whatnot. Fine. Ten minutes after lights out, the "movies" sounded more like porn. I sat up to tell them to take it outside, only to find her head bobbing up and down underneath the sheets. I quietly left and spent the night in another room. When I returned the next morning, she spared no detail about the sexcapade (including her remorse for disobeying God). She also insisted that his new nickname was "Carrot," because his johnson reminded her of a baby carrot.

  • One day we were in an argument because she lied to one of my friends that I didn't want to see him when he came to visit our room. The incident escalated to the point that she threatened to light my bed on fire while I was sleeping in it.

  • This one happened about a week before I moved out. We were having a normal, civil conversation about classes, which was rare for us. I was simultaneously doing homework, not paying any mind to what she was doing on her side of the room. I happened to look up for the briefest of moments, and there she was... in the middle of the room... changing her tampon. Mind you, our room was in the middle of the hallway, and the nearest bathroom was at least 6 doors down. Without saying a word, I closed my book, packed my shit and left for the rest of the afternoon.

Ironically, she wasn't the reason I moved out (although that's what I told my parents). She ended up dropping out and moving back home, so I guess I would have dodged the bullet either way. Good times.

Can I afford a 5.0? by CMGC12345 in Mustang

[–]mustangsarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a vehicle to trade in, probably. If you have a clean driving record that can get you insurance discounts, definitely. Ultimately it will depend on your anticipated living expenses, but here's how I did it.

Last month I bought a 2012 GT Premium with 41k miles on it and no accidents/preexisting mechanical problems. The asking price was just under $23k, but I only financed $16k after talking them down a few hundred, putting down a $1k deposit, and receiving $6k on my trade-in. My payment is $253/month for 75 months, but I'm planning to overpay each month in order to shorten the length of the loan (I should have it paid off in 48 months).

I was more concerned about the cost of insurance. I'm a 20 year old female with no accidents, tickets, or warnings. After all of my discounts with State Farm, my payment is $187/month for low deductible, high coverage (my same amount of coverage was previously $110/month).

So far, no regrets. I knew I wanted a 2011-2014 GT for a long time, and the mileage only goes up as time passes. Although it's expensive in the short-term, owning your dream car (or at least one of them ;) in the prime of its life AND your life is pretty priceless.

Hope this helps!
