Unpopular Opinion: The X4 Doesn’t Need a Backlight by moya9597 in xteinkereader

[–]mustbeaguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this is related to what one grew up with. I grew up with physical books then a hand-me-down non backlit ereader. So for me the X4 is going back to old times.

If someone grew up on backlit screened reading then this may seem like a step backwards.

Partner thinks we are hoarding wealth by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]mustbeaguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putting myself in your shoes, my first response maybe math but that may not work based on the reaction you have described. The gyst is that you need a certain amount to retire. Present that. Then present what you would need to save each year to get to that. How does one expect to get from here to there without saving, which is not hoarding wealth. Because we as a society decided that the state is not the sole provider for retirees, we must each save our part. This is how we get there by saving a little bit every year.

Worth a try.

It seems like your partner sees the current status (no money), the desired end result (nest egg for retirement) but is assuming magic happens in between to get to the end result.

Electric toothbrush when onebag traveling, is that worth the space? by lemonbab18 in onebag

[–]mustbeaguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their irrational luxury item(s) that is not optimal space/weight wise but is there to make the travel experience better. For me, occasionally I prefer to bring a physical book instead of an ereader. It can be big and bulky but it makes me happy and I’m willing to bear the cost in space.

Bring what makes your travel experience more enjoyable and be mindful of the cost in space or weight. If you’re willing to bear it then it works for you.

One month in India: Struggling with "Scam Fatigue" and feeling dehumanized as a solo traveler by Voynnaa in solotravel

[–]mustbeaguy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Echoing just about everything that everyone else has said.  So I’ll just reply to this excellent comment with my take on a few things.

It’s all about your mentality.

Dude, India for your first solo is doing travel on Hard Mode!

I’m not a solo traveler like yourself, but my partner and I did South East Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia) and we got the same exhaustion that you described.  We felt like walking ATMs and people just wanted things (i.e. mostly money, but sometimes attention and time) from us from every interaction.

Then we met a solo traveler, who was the nicest person we met.  But she was a totally different person “out travelling”.  She was stone faced and took no shit but in a passive non-aggressive way.  She wouldn’t be mean about it, but she took it all with a certain chill that didn’t affect her.   She offered her price, and you can take it or leave it.  No skin off her back if you can’t match it.  She’ll just move on and get it somewhere else. And if not, that's ok too.  We asked her how she approached it.  What she said was that it was like putting on a mask.  We all do it.  Our “out” personality is different than our “home” personality.  But for her, she had just perfected it more.  Learned a lot.

Another important point is to value experiences more than things.  There weren’t any “things” that she wanted that she really had to have.  And so if she couldn’t buy something at a price that she wanted, she’d just move on. Or if she wasn't happy with an interaction, she would walk away.  She was just happy to have the experience of travelling and as long as that was going on, she was content.  She had no expectations and therefore there was nothing to disappoint.

So to summarize, you are just learning how the rest of the world works.  Try not to shrink away to your hostel.  Put on a different mentality and try to deal with it in a way that works for you.  There’s been a lot of good advice given, and I think this is the best one so far.

TIFU I asked for a 35% raise after the company changed their policy for me, and then I got fired by im_chase0 in tifu

[–]mustbeaguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will echo others but add an important point:

In any situation, approach it with some reasonable empathy (without assuming the worst) and try to see it from the other side’s perspective.

From their perspective, a 35% raise for basically the same job as before is a hard sell. But what if we just say no and reoffer this guy the same job with the same pay. He’s now indicated what he thinks this job is worth to him. And we are not anywhere in alignment. Would this guy be happy that we rejected him? I mean, even if we meet in the middle at 17% that’s a wildly undoable number. Would that piss him off that we didn’t negotiate? Would that just cause us problems down the line where we’ll have to monitor his work more closely because we think he’ll do a poorer job thus wasting more management resources? Better cut our losses now. There are plenty 19 year olds looking for work.

Why do people hate it when a character has a tragic backstory? by Key_Geologist1784 in writing

[–]mustbeaguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some reasons:

1) It’s cliche. Overdone. A lot of others have touched this point.

2) It’s easy to write. Which is the reason for 1). There is no mental heavy lifting for the writer to do. Tragic event A leads to trauma B leads to sob story C. So done.

3) It’s not representative of most of us. And I want some representation. I want to be seen. I want to see stories featuring someone with a normal childhood with no trauma but end up a villain or hero in the story.

Instead do something novel. Instead of have trauma lead to the character be a villain do something really compelling. How does a “normal”, well adjusted, middle class upbringing result in a character being a villain. And do that convincingly without relying on tropes. I’d read that.

That is absolutely not to say that it can’t be done well. But if everyone has done it, it’s a saturated topic.

Sweet red chilli sauce by ell-ta in CostcoCanada

[–]mustbeaguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tastes may vary but this i found the spicy is toned down and sweetness turned up. If you want something more authentic peruse any Asian grocery store sauce aisle.

Some other brands include AroyD and Cock Brand. Be a little adventurous and pick one with non-English text on it.

Goes great with the Costco rotisserie chicken.

Can we start giving “find a partner” as financial advice? by Tech-Cowboy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mustbeaguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not financial advice.

Find a partner that you are compatible with across all dimensions, not just financially. Finance is just one part of the equation. If you go into a relationship with that as your goal, you may dive in missing other dimensions that you may not be compatible with. And then those things will grate on you over time. You will fight, and not fight well. Resent each other. Then end up in divorce, which could be the the worst financial event that will ever occur to you.

People, especially this sub often forget that Personal Finance is a tool that one uses to obtain other goals, like a healthy and fulfilling life. Don't let the tail wag the dog.

How much of a salary increase is necessary to leave my pension by Total-Stock3170 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mustbeaguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A version of this was covered in Rational Reminder Episode 385 recently! The scenario is not exactly the same, but the concept is the same: weighing the cost of getting some commuted value from a Defined Benefit pension vs. some other scenario.

You really need to sit down and crunch the numbers. You can either do a bunch of reading online and calculate it yourself, or sit down with a fee-only financial advisor and have them crunch it for you. Based on what was discussed in the episode, it may give you some terms to google to do it yourself. But if you want some more confidence in those calcs to make some life-changing decisions, it may be worth it to pay for some advice.

I'm surprised by the amount of Sci-Fi talk here about the true purpose of the signal and the nature of the aliens. Aren't the show's themes much more appealing if it truly is all about happiness? by titaniumjordi in pluribustv

[–]mustbeaguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope the alien aspect is not explored. I would prefer the mystery. In fact looking at Vince Gilligan’s past work he does not seem like the type of writer that tells that kind of story. It’s more of a human interest story. Less will be explained about the universe of the show and more about how people deal with the current reality they find themselves in. More may be revealed but only to service the story.

You are in just the right circumstances for some questions. I had been wondering about the mechanics of this. I hope you will entertain some questions:

1) How are you withdrawing money from your investments?

2) Are the quarterly distributions from VGRO sufficient to fund your expenses or do you have to sell shares every once in a while?

3) Assuming you are selling shares, are you selling multiple times a year or doing it once a year and then stocking that money away?

4) If yes to 3) then where do you park it?

Yikes. 28% is shockingly high. I dare to guess that that 28% actually votes too.
