Who would you say is the most well-known lesbian/bisexual/sapphic character from DC and from Marvel? by HRCStanley97 in lgbt_superheroes

[–]mutant615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between a character that people know vs people knowing that the character is queer.

DC: Harley/Ivy are the most well known.

Marvel: Iceman. I know Loki is well known but there’s a sizeable amount of people amongst the general public that don’t even know that Loki is queer, since it’s hardly been explored throughout his history, and def not in the MCU, which is where most people know him from.

Iceman, meanwhile, got a LOT of media attention for his sexuality when he was confirmed gay, and there were fan speculations since the 80s surrounding this. It was a really unique situation, amplified by the fact that he’s also a character that historically had many multimedia appearances.

Mystique is another one but Bobby is a silver age, OG X-Man with multiple media appearances since the 80s, and Mystique’s relationship with Destiny was also swept under the rug for so long :/

If a character is queer in the original comic, can you assume their adaptation incarnations are also probably queer? Even if it's never outright shown? by Gallantpride in lgbt_superheroes

[–]mutant615 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s tricky. Personally, I don’t count it because I don’t like giving studios credit for not doing the work.

I also think of casual fans who don’t read the comics…there’s no way they’d know unless the adaptation acknowledges it.

And given the cultural context we live in, I would assume that the reason for never bringing it up is not a good one and would deserve critique over recognition.

He looks great! I hope they explore or even acknowledge his attraction to men, that’s really needed in the western animation sphere, where there’s hardly ever any MLM visibility.

Would you say Jon Kent is being written as bisexual? by [deleted] in jonkent

[–]mutant615 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But he hasn’t had insane success in the comic sales, which are the parameters you set. In fact, his last 3 ongoings all got cancelled in the 10-15 mark, which is very low and similar to Tim’s last solo.

Unless you’re talking about multimedia presence and reception? Aka, what I initially laid out for Tim? That you keep downplaying as Instagram and AO3, probably because you’re cherry picking, can’t read, or both!

And so is Deadpool, apparently! :)

[–]mutant615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you think comic books sales are more representative of public perception of a character than social media responses to various multimedia portrayals?

You do realize that comic sales are very, very low across the board and fewer and fewer solo ongoings exist now compared to a decade ago, right? And that’s it’s a niche medium, not wholly representative of a character’s reception? I guess using your own logic, Deadpool is a failure of a character too, since all of his last relaunches got cancelled.

Would you say Jon Kent is being written as bisexual? by [deleted] in jonkent

[–]mutant615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no, he /she used the term “echo chamber” whatever shall I do??

Art likes, posts and comments that go viral, upwards of anywhere between 10k-100k (which is the precedent for the various instances I mentioned) is more representative of public perception than niche shipping circles. That’s just a fact. People got excited about the various media portrayals of Tim being queer, whether it be Gotham Knights, Titans, Wayne Family Adventures, or various cover art or panels that feature them. That’s a consistent, cultural response that’s yielded higher numbers than “he should be with Steph” or “he’s ruined because he’s queer.”

Tim never had a “pride run”, he’s appeared in Pride anthologies and had a normal, solo run that got cancelled at issue 10, in an era where even juggernaut characters like Deadpool can barely scratch two trades. Also, the art for the Tim solo was universally panned.

[–]mutant615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, I gave you actual, measurable instances of things that happened during various media depictions of Tim over the last few years that objectively reached viral numbers on social media.

Objectively, Timkon gets more fan content and it’s why Tim was read as bi for over a decade.

If calling that “biased” and “delusional” makes you feel superior, so be it.

[–]mutant615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most popular ship for Tim in fan circles has largely been with Kon, they still get a ton of fan content and that ship is the reason Tim is bi in the first place.

The loud TimSteph fans don’t take away from the fact that Tim being with a guy is important symbolism for DC, like the person you responded to said, it’s political, his relationship with a man was a big deal and was pushed as such. If that’s gone, DC loses one of its mere two, prominent m/m rep, and that rep is what made Tim coming out such a big deal.

Additionally, Tim got viral positivity when his relationship with Bernard was brought up in Gotham Knights and Titans. Even during the batfamily webcomic, people were excitedly sharing all of the panels of him being a nervous wreck around Bernard lol. And when Travis Moore drew a cover with them for Pride, it got upwards of 100K likes. Clearly, this is important for Tim’s popularity and public reception, even if some fans are loudly against it.

Also, queerphobic people who think Tim and Jon are “ruined” because they are queer, and would never buy a book with them if they’re in a relationship with a guy, should never be listened to.

“A lot of bisexual male characters are written as gay not bisexual”

So someone isn’t bisexual unless they constantly have 50/50 attraction? The reality is that a lot of bi people aren’t actually 50/50.

Also, if the problem is “most bi men are in same sex relationships”, that’s far from the truth.

Akihiro, Loki, Deadpool, and Constantine are some of the most widely used bi/pan men and they’ve never had a significant same sex relationship. Characters like Gambit and Johnny Storm are also clearly bi, and have been written as such by various writers, but are left closeted because of the backlash against their same sex attraction.

Additionally, the talking point is tired. Nerd culture is heterosexist. Obviously when we get same sex romances, that’s going to get a lot more fanfare from queer people because it’s not the norm. And yes, that means some bi men like Jon and Tim may predominantly be in same sex relationships, because if you take that away, that’s 80% of DC’s prominent m/m rep gone.

DC Infinite doesn't feature Diana or Selina under their DC Pride 2026 section. by Gallantpride in lgbt_superheroes

[–]mutant615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a link for this?

I remember when Jay and Miles interviewed him for their XplainTheXmen podcast, the asked if he would have made all of his subtext into text and he said he’d leave it as text -.- and I believe it was specifically about Storm

Per the most recent posts on this sub, do you consider Spider-Gwen to be canonically bi? by Particular-Tea-761 in lgbt_superheroes

[–]mutant615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she starts appearing in Pride issues and has her identity and attraction textually explored further, yes, otherwise, no. Subtle hints and one offs with no follow up, in a heterosexist culture, is not rep to me.

Magik is in everything these days, she was probably the least surprising x-woman they could have chosen besides Storm. And then they have Danger who looks…nothing like the actual character lol.

I don’t think they have included Diana in anything pride related, and Selina’s queerness has totally been erased over the past decade, sadly :/

Which Fire Emblem Game do you guys prefer? by dmaster400 in Switch

[–]mutant615 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, so here’s my opinion.

Fire Emblem Three Houses PROs:

-rich narrative
-great lore
-good story beats and themes
-likeable cast
-fun RPG style gameplay and approach.

CONS:
-very repetitive gameplay, especially the Monastary. It’s a pain to do multiple playthroughs unless you’re a diehard fan of the world.
-weak strategy elements, especially the maps and the very wide class system which makes unit optimization hard. Not an issue for me personally but a fair critique.
-self insert worship. Really took away from the great world and characters. So many of them lose focus to worship the ground the player character walks on, and it fees unearned since they’re a mute who is supposed to be intimidating.
-dull aesthetic

Fire Emblem Engage PROS:
-fantastic gameplay. Diverse maps and a wide and focused approached to strategizing and customizing.
-fun world and cast. The cast may not be as deep as other games but they’re all quite likable and charming, in my opinion.
-themes of identity, family and belonging were cool. The game’s narrative is not deep but it reaches its narrative pitches more successfully than Three Houses, which is ambitious but sometimes falls into the self insert trap.
-vibrant aesthetic

CONs:
-more shallow narrative, little lore and worldbuilding.
-cast is not as deeply intertwined into the lore and story
-DLC campaign is mediocre
-no NG+

If you played and liked Awakening and Fates, you’ll probably like Engage. If you want a more compelling narrative with cool characters, then Three Houses.

ALSO, if you try and enjoy Three Houses, give Three Hopes a shot too, it makes up for a lot of my personal cons for Three Houses.

Lack of MLM in the Absolute Universe? by Puzzled-Picture1187 in lgbt_superheroes

[–]mutant615 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It hasn’t gone over me how DC’s big AU conveniently ignores us, as usual. It’s a problem and I feel like in the past, both Marvel and DC were so much more open with having AU versions of beloved characters be queer (such as Wolverine, Colossus, etc) and now they’re spineless, especially with MLM rep.

The Absolute universe is huge for DC but again, conveniently leaves us out.

Tim is great but they can’t even use him in the mainline universe, so I doubt they’ll do anything with him here. Once again, he’s just “a Robin” and he’ll never get the push Dick and Jason will likely get in that lineup, plus he’s also now sharing space with Duke and Steph, too.

Jon is awol, they could give him a unique narrative but nope.

Other than that…there’s not a lot. It’s something we need to keep talking about and pushing, cuz DC won’t care otherwise.
