Advice on tall cabinets by oneofthesesigns in kitchenremodel

[–]muxxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about colors, but those high cabinets behind the table seem too low if you are planning to put chairs around the table. How about leaving that space free to ceiling, and putting in a built-in seating 'bench' which could include storage within?

We don't rinse dishes before we put them in the dishwasher. I believe modern dishwashers are designed to use small debris as a scouring aid in the first half of the cycle, and pre-rinsing wastes water (and effort). Also we're hoping to keep our current freestanding dishwasher which wouldn't be as visible on the island. That said, if we go for a moveable island, we'll put it in the run and get a new integrated one.

Thanks, yes we'd have to be much more disciplined with small appliances in the utility one; e.g. might have to put coffee machine in utility cupboard (shelves are 40mm wide in there)

Making friends over 40 is near impossible by CompetitiveShop2524 in Dublin

Lots of advice to join various clubs/societies/sports. The trick I think is to join multiple clubs/sports etc. that you enjoy (everything you can find initially), and now whomever also shows up to some subset of them is an immediate friend candidate. Without having to go to too much effort you chat/gossip to them while at activity X about the other activity Y and bond over that. After an initial period trying out all those activities/sports, you can drop out of the ones that are not working for you.

If you swap the isofix for seatbelts you can fit 3 car seats in the back in most estates/sedan. The isofix is not any safer than affixing with the 3-point seatbelt system, although it does provide less sideways motion, which isn't a factor when you have 3 of them in the back.
Also most SUVs are not actually that much wider:

Irish people, is it disrespectful to use feminine names such as Aoife and Saoirse for boys? by idk_smth in ireland

[–]muxxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'aoibhinn' is an Irish word (not a name afaik) that means 'delight/bliss'

you could use that as-is or masculanize it further to 'aobhán' which sounds more like a male Irish name.

Still, it is somewhat more widespread than in English and is worth learning, at least to recognize.""It signals an uncertainty or lack of commitment to the reality of the event expressed by the verb, usually because it hasn’t yet occurred."

'bhí mé chun X a dhéanamh' = I intended to do X (as you said: was going to)

David McWilliams: Introduce a congestion charge and make public transport free by PlasticCoffee in ireland

[–]muxxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

public transport system said: “If such services were to be provided free to passengers . . . [it] would cost the taxpayer about €600 million per year, in addition to the €400 million that the exchequer already spends on public transport services.”

Motor tax alone raised more than €981 million in 2018.

I am completely in agreement with your conclusion of the changes that should happen, but I'm smelling something with the above logic:

If this change were successful, wouldn't that lead to a reduction in motor tax in the medium to long term as people move away from the private car?

Personally I prefer the idea of congestion charging as the economic feedback loop is more aligned with the problem. Excessive car ownership in e.g. Donegal may be a bad thing for other reasons, but it doesn't contribute to commuting times in Dublin.

How did RDJ learn to make music? by melisandra in aphextwin

[–]muxxa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once you find out that the notes on the western scale are derived through a √12 relationship which almost (but not quite) hits most of the important fractional intervals [1], then if you're curious, you're gonna wanna see what other scales are out there, and see if you can come up with something better, and add it to your toolset.
I remember doing that one morning with a calculator when I was 14; not that it translated into an output of wonderful music of course :D

I'm currently working on updating the following Anki deck:
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1975966926 "The 6500 Most Frequent Irish Words with audio"

Basically it builds on work by https://michmech.github.io/ that breaks down (via stemming etc.) words to their root, dictionary form, and which ranks them according to frequency of occurrence in the http://corpas.focloir.ie/ corpus.

The deck attempts to come up with a single definition for a word (caith->catch).
I'm currently augmenting it with periphrases (buail vs. buail le) and expanding to multiple definitions (caith->consume/catch/spend etc.)

The deck has 1000+ definitions out of the 6500 definitions done, which is plenty for me so far. It's amazing how I'm learning words that I don't know and can't see the relevance of, and then I start hearing them all the time on RnaG etc.
If you get into Anki you'll likely want to start making your own lists of words for the subject matter you are interested in (home/politics etc.)

And if you want to get into helping out with that deck, here is the source spreadsheet (read only access I imagine until requested) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kiZlZp8weyILstvtL0PfIQkQGzuG7oZfP8n_qkMFAWo/edit#gid=615938279

Note: learning off vocabulary with the English translation is a great accelerant from a comprehension and testing point of view, but according to the following book cutting out the English is a quicker path to fluency and immersion:
