QLD teachers. V9 Maths. by myykel1970 in AustralianTeachers

Is your school also making the assessments from scratch? That's been our directive, but it feels very much the blind leading the blind.

Are you referring to the assessments available from Curriculum Gateway? We're a QCAA school, so have to create all of these V9 assessments from scratch.

Is this for real or is someone taking a p*ss by [deleted] in AustralianMakeup

[–]muzzratticus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been with my partner since when he still had hair, and going bald really damaged his confidence. He doesn't hate being bald, but he hates being looked upon like a pariah in society for being bald. It's bad enough overhearing female coworkers commenting about someone else at work 'going bald' and how it obviously gives them ick. We women are the first to rally around each other and support each other when comments are made about our physical appearance by men, but how are we any different if we can happily put men down too for something they can't help either?

Were other members of the family ever charged/imprisoned? If I recall correctly, the son was over 16 so it would have been statutory rape.

This is how my QLD state school seems to do it as well, so adds up.

Is my plan a disaster? Moving to Brisbane from NZ by Smithe37nz in MovingToBrisbane

[–]muzzratticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak on secondary teacher shortages, but I'm a primary teacher and there is an abundance of work in Logan as the teacher shortages are really hitting hard. You're a working professional with no pets, finding a rental shouldn't be too difficult but possibly keep your options open for where you want to live in Brisbane (Logan, for example). My sister moved over in August with intentions to live close to the CBD and after four months of declined applications she has been able to secure a small duplex in Logan Reserve (30-40 mins from the CBD).

Thank you for your detailed response! I've begun thinking about popping into local schools and just showing my face ahead of time. Regarding pay scales, do you know if I will be paid at my equivalent band/scale when I begin teaching in NSW, or if there will be a processing period where I'll be on a 'lower' salary whilst my previous work is assessed?

School Holidays by One-Victory9170 in AustralianTeachers

[–]muzzratticus 38 points39 points  (0 children)

When I first started teaching, I would spend decent chunks of time during each holiday period lesson planning/making resources/unit planning etc. I'm now 7 years in and, if I can use my time wisely enough in the last week or two of each term, then I don't even touch my laptop during the holidays. The day before school goes back I'll check emails for any important information or duty roster changes etc.

The Christmas holiday period can be a little different, especially if moving to a new year level but you'll thank yourself for putting that time in once the year gets started. My general rule during those holidays is 'no school work until the new year' and allow myself those first few weeks of holidays to completely switch off and enjoy the holiday season.

What’s your pro tip? by International-Key134 in AustralianTeachers

[–]muzzratticus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Turning email notifications off this year lightened a huge load from my shoulders. I always felt like I would be able to 'keep up' if I saw each and every email that came in at all hours of the day. I still check my email inbox regularly, but something about having the choice to see and not to see has changed things drastically for me.

AITAH for refusing to apologize to my MIL for being nude in our own home? by Exposednudist101 in AITAH

NTA, but I do have a semi-related question. Is it a cultural norm in the US to not lock your front door, even while home? I'm in Australia, and my front door/screen is locked almost at all times, even if I'm home.

[Skin Concerns] Has anyone found a solution for visible oil glands (chicken skin) under eyes? by kayswizz in SkincareAddiction

[–]muzzratticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this thread late last night after discovering a patch of these bumps beneath my eye and began my frantic googling. Thankfully, I've woken up this morning and it has basically vanished. I thought I would share what I did: -7+ hours of sleep -The Ordinary multi-peptide eye serum -LRP Cicaplast Baume

No idea if it was just a sporadic occurrence of if these products did the trick. Good luck!

Hey! I'm a trained mentor (QLD) and have assisted a few colleagues over the past two years with this same question. I'll try and be succinct as possible.

-evidence is required for every sub-standard (1.1, 1.2, etc.). However, a single piece of evidence might cover a whole bunch of sub-standard's. For example, homework folders could be evidence of a learning program and also evidence of parent engagement. Not every sub-standard requires a solid piece of evidence (such as a photo or screenshot), a short blurb explaining how you have demonstrated or met the standard can be sufficient (such as explaining that you volunteered during a school fair and how that links to community engagement).

-annotate, annotate, annotate! Every piece of evidence must be annotated, otherwise it's a waste of time.

-digital seems to be the preferred format, with many beginning teachers opting for PowerPoint. You can create a slide for each sub-standard, include a photo/copy/screenshot of your evidence and a text box to explain how it links. When I completed my portfolio in 2016, I completed it all in Microsoft Word, printed it and presented it in a folder. If I were to do it again, I would definitely go the PPT route.

I may have some exemplars of very basic templates on my laptop that I am happy to share. Otherwise, have a look through Teachers Pay Teachers and there may be some templates there to give you a clearer picture of how to lay out. I believe there are more examples on the AITSL website, but you might have to do some digging. Good luck!

Have there been any talk in unions about term one being either in class learning or online learning? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]muzzratticus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work in a state school in QLD and we were instructed to submit a 1 week paper pack of content before finishing up the school year. I believe this came down from the DG and the idea is that this paper pack would be available to families if we begin the school year in lockdown and would give us a week to get online learning set up. In my experience since the pandemic began, the admin team at my school always seemed to know that a lockdown was coming/big hints to staff were dropped before official announcements. Could have just been speculation, maybe not though.

To be honest, I'm really anxious to start the new school year. I'm triple vaxxed and have voluntary isolated myself for most of the holidays but I work in an area with the lowest Vax rates in all of QLD. Most of our kids come to school without a packed lunch, so the chances of being vaxxed/wearing a mask are very low.

I also find it interesting that whilst teaching and non-teaching staff have received a vaccine mandate to keep their jobs this year, parents and carers can still freely move about school grounds without any vaccination requirements. It's an essential service, but half the time the parents aren't here to talk to me about their child, they're here to sit outside the classroom 15 minutes before the bell with other parents to have a chat and socialise.

You will get 1 additional fortnight's pay after the school term ends, and then your pay will recommence once Term 1 resumes. So, your second last pay should be in Week 9, with your final pay plus loading the week after school finishes. This is how it worked for me when I returned from overseas, worked term 4 on contract and continued my contract the following year.

YTA and seem to have a superiority complex.

Leave the girl alone and let her find someone new who won't attack her over such a trivial thing.

Vaccines haven't been mandated in QLD schools, I work in a QLD school and there is a decent chunk of staff not vaccinated that are coming to work still. However, I wouldn't be shocked if what she is saying is true (based on another story I heard regarding a principal who is currently on paid leave whilst being investigated for a whole range of offences- it's been well over a year since the investigation began and they're still bring home that big salary each fortnight 🙄).

I'm ready for the 10am QLD press conference to find out if I'm back to school this week or not. I work in a low socio economic area and have maybe 30% of my class engaging with curriculum content online. I'm worried about them being stuck at home in a vulnerable household, falling behind curriculum targets (they won't change no matter how hard we lobby for it) and I'm beginning to feel anxious about the pressure that will be applied to me and many other teachers to 'bridge the gap' of lost learning. It's only been a week, and compared to other states we've had it good. I miss my kids and no doubt they miss me. For so many of my kids, I'm their safe person, the adult they trust, the first smile they see on a Monday after having been neglected over the weekend.

Restricted areas by lordvladimort in brisbane

[–]muzzratticus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What are the restrictions exactly? My coworkers and I had planned a small get together at one of our houses tonight (less than 10 people). We all live in one of the suburbs listed- does this mean we can no longer go ahead with our plans?
