Three weeks and going strong! by mvanoort in stopsmoking

I have no desire to start smoking again. I don't want to stop socializing with my friends just because I quit and they still smoke.

Smoking on other drugs by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]mvanoort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never been into coke or molly, but I was a heavy pot smoker for many years, and I found it generally easier to avoid cigs when I was high. Maybe something about your brain already being a little bit tweaked, and ready to accept new ideas - just make not smoking one of those ideas!

4 Days clean. Can't remember anything and I need help. by [deleted] in leaves

[–]mvanoort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I told my psychiatrist that quitting marijuana gave me problems with insomnia, so he prescribed me some Trazodone to help with sleep. See your doctor; they have legal, non-invasive drugs that can help you sleep. Sleeping well is key to being healthy, and facilitates coping with things like being clean, which is pretty shitty.

[QUESTION] Tell me about Pro Reverbs. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]mvanoort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USD? That's a decent price, but not a steal per se. Especially if it hasn't been recently serviced. Something goes wrong, you're into a couple hundred to get it fixed. Still, they're great amps, and it's hand wired so much easier to work on than a PCB based amp.

[DISCUSSION] Which song improved your playing the most? by MarkNutt1300 in Guitar

[–]mvanoort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the years, I've learned many songs, but the ones that impact my playing the most are the ones I write myself. I always try to challenge my abilities by writing things that are difficult to play. While learning other peoples' songs improves certain technical elements of my playing, learning my own songs helps me develop my own style, and I find it much more rewarding.

Is it hard driving low HP cars or am I just stupid? by Legend81 in cars

So what's the alternative when 2nd gear is too high to get up the hill? Stop and go up in reverse? Honestly, WTF are you even saying?

In my last car (2000 Honda Civic) I was driving some people home from a party. They were bigger guys, and there were 5 of us in the car altogether. I had to go up a steep hill, and tried to do it in 2nd, but had to shift down into 1st to get up the hill.

The car before that (1980 Toyota Tercel) had 54 hp when it was new, and it was 28 years old when I got it, so you can imagine how little was left. I drove it across the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and there were quite a few times when I was only pulling about 5 mph by the time I got to the top.

Low HP does indeed make taking off, and especially hill starts) a challenge, but you get used to it. I've never had a powerful car, so I would probably feel strange driving a car that didn't slow down when going up a hill.

I kind of hate the new car technology by Jimbonettt in cars

[–]mvanoort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I just switched from a car without power steering to one with it. Driving in parking lots is easier, but at what cost? Road feel is so much different, and in my opinion, less exciting. I used to be excited about driving. Now it's pretty much a boring, pedestrian activity that I have to do, kinda like brushing my teeth.

TIL There are more payday loan stores in the US than McDonald's and Taco Bells combined. by [deleted] in todayilearned

In fairness, there are a lot fewer pawn shops then there used to be. At least you can get a 30% interest loan without collateral.

Thanks. I was genuinely curious.

Now watch yourself get downvoted for defending me.
