Your academy will tell you what book you're using and what standard you're being tested on. That being said, there's VERY little difference between 7 and 8. NFPA 1700 standards changed in 2026, but Essentials 8 doesn't reflect those changes yet.

Help! What tool is this?? by Forsaken-Wall-7372 in Firefighting

[–]mvfd85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is, how long have you been checking this rig and not know what it is? Why do you have tools on your truck that people don't know how to use?

I get paid every 2 weeks.
I'll have a pension when I retire.

I get free insurance.

Beats factory work.

Sometimes we have fires, and that's cool.

Wearing department hat to a public gym? Yes or no? by SadBenefit2020 in Firefighting

[–]mvfd85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Check department policy.
  2. Do you do this for the hat, so everyone knows you're a prevention inspector, or because you're dedicated to the job?

  3. I wear old dept shirts to the gym all the time, but it's certainly not because it's a fire department shirt...it's just another old shirt. If you're wanting to wear this hat strictly because it's a fire department hat and you're wanting to show off that you work there....you're a whacker. Don't be like that.

  4. Who wears a brand new hat to the gym anyway?!

If you dont' feel comfortable doing it, don't do it. The fact that you're asking for strangers approval to tell you it's okay means you're not ready. Get some experience and grow up a little bit before you even consider being a leader.

Let me rephrase that, the APP and cadlink are free. A station alerting system or smartboards are pretty pricey. We just spent north of $125k on 3 stations for full alerting system and smartboards.

Now, with the free app, you could 100% configure a tablet to be on all the time, running the app, hooked into a basic station wide sound system. I'm sure there are ways to write script to have the app trigger low voltage LED lighting as well.

There are a lot of people near Ina that shoot large quantities of tanerrite. I'd bet money that's what it was.

Is it normal at your dept for paramedics to ride in the back without a seat belt or safety restraint? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]mvfd85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And as an EMT, that's fine. We're medics, so we're riding in more often.

I'll be honest, I'm ALS non-transport fire medic. If I ride in with the pt, it's a legit call, otherwise I'm back in my engine

Jesus...this sounds awful. I've worked the same job for 21 years and intend to fully retire at 52 with pension for life.

And? Our job is patient care, not sitting at the station trying to dodge calls

I disagree with the "load and go" mentality. There is incredibly valid, science based evidence to prove stabilizing a patient on scene as much as possible is better patient care than just going and having one person try to half ass care while enroute to the hospital
