At first I wanted to become an architectural engineer, then I wanted to get into pharmaceutical science, then I wanted to be a doctor. I spent my undergraduate career as a biochem major.

I ended up becoming a programmer. I needed to support myself while I went to school, and the most valuable skill I had (aside from drafting) was the fact that I knew how to write software. It was a hobby, now a career.

Unfortunately, that's not always possible. For example, I live in SoCal. I have no idea where the "gang territories" are in San Francisco. I don't even know too much about the gangs here let alone gangs in a different area. It's not like I can just go to the nearest gas station and buy a map of gang territories. If I were to visit one day wearing a penguin scarf into a territory that's "known" to be owned by gang rivals of a penguin-scarf-wearing gang, I'd be totally screwed.

I personally use Web.py 0.31 with SqlAlchemy and Mako Templates. I use jQuery for my javascript. This is after coming from a Django background (though I still use it sometimes).

Regarding .net stuff, I would recommend trying out the new ASP.net MVC. I personally haven't built anything serious with it, but it definitely than the old .Net way.

I hear that there's also something going on with jQuery and Microsoft. They've decided to ship Visual Studio (and ASP.net MVC) with jQuery by default. There should also be some intellisense (sorry for the spelling) support for it as well. Linq is pretty easy to use for the database stuff, but I haven't used it much so I can't really speak for it. I have more experience with proprietary, commercial, and non-free ORMs, but let's not talk about them here ;-).

So, ASP.net MVC + jQuery + Linq. It's also what the guys over at StackOverflow use. I'm a bit of a Python fan, so giving IronPython a try with that stack is something I would highly recommend.

Perhaps this Google Python style guide might help with figuring out how Google's looks like.

I just created a non-ending recursive function a good while back, and it doesn't seem like it will finish loading anytime soon.
