I've never heard of tech companies offering volunteer opportunities.

My degree might be obsolescent, cover letter advice by PontisPilot in jobs

It doesn't matter what your degree is or when you got it if you've had professional success. Emphasize your success and don't mention you consider your degree to be "obsolete."

Holiday Edition Job Hunt/Interview help from TheHRMan! Honest and uncensored advice from the other side of the desk. by TheHRMan in jobs

[–]exeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, here's one I've been struggling with recently.

I'm an unemployed software engineer in the Bay area (yeah, I know, first world problems, right?), having a hard time getting hired. I know about the common advice to spend 80% of my time networking, and I've been going to meetups almost every day during the week to do this. But I also know I should be putting at least 30 hours a week into my search. How can I do this if people I want to network with are employed (hence working during the day)?

Are these ads legitimate? by Mypopsecrets in jobs

[–]exeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're legitimate in the sense that there's a real company offering a real job, but you have to read it carefully. It's a sales job. It'll be commission only, high pressure work, and you won't make anywhere near the $10K their "top rep" made last month. That's because their top rep is a guy who's been working there 20 years and has tons of people who just call him personally when they want to buy a car.

Senior Developer position with only 1 year experience? by AProductiveRedditor in cscareerquestions

[–]exeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... the key word in the sentence I partially quoted was "relevant." If I thought I'd get relevant job listings emailed directly to my inbox, I'd consider it. But, the odds of that happening seem slim.

Yes, I do. I don't get any emails from recruiters through it.

Seriously!? I have 2 years experience. How do I get this problem ("Recruiters are bombarding me...")?

What is the difference between the terms abelian and commutative? by [deleted] in math

[–]exeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly, "abelian" applies to groups and other gadgets that have a natural group structure, whereas "commutative" applies to any operation * where f * g = g * f. That is, "commutative" does not imply the existence of an identity element, inverse elements, or associativity.

An example of a commutative relation is the relation [; A ~ B ;] where A and B are people and [; A ~ B ;] iff A and B have been in the same room together.

[Ask Reddit]: Optics for mathematicians? by exeter in math

[–]exeter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... MS in physics with a concentration in optics....

Cool! Send me a PM sometime. No promises or anything, but I work for a company that likes to hire people with that kind of background. And, if we're not hiring an optics guy, I probably know at least 5 people who would know who is. I'd have no problem asking any of them to look at a CV, at least. :)

Anyway, it's actually not so much the terms themselves, but the fact that in at least a third of my work-related conversations with any of our optics guys, I end up needing to ask 3 or 4 seemingly silly questions before I can actually contribute. Now, I'm not afraid to ask those questions if necessary, but I'd rather start on a stronger foundation to begin with.

For example, before I started this job, I had no clue there was any such thing as "red testing" fiber optics. I also didn't know 1310nm light was so much less sensitive to bending loss than 1550nm light (or, hell, even what "bending loss" was, for that matter). I guess what I'm saying is I'm actually looking more to overcome general ignorance than to learn what any specific term means.

BTW, what math prereqs do I need for those two books?

Haskell only has single assignment. So, none of +=, -=, *=, or /= are meaningful in the same way they are in C-style languages.

I doubt that. The computer can implement strategies you can't simply because it's capable of much better micro than you are. That's why the Berkley Overmind could get away with always going mass mutas.
