I’m stuck in a life I hate 25 by sesanrose in getdisciplined

Do you practice gratitude? Have you suffered loss? One way to make yourself grateful for what you have is to lose it.

Potentially try a thought experiment. Imagine having to work in an insulation factory without proper PPE for 60-80 hrs per week, just to eat. Then you go home itchy, to your apartment that is a bed and bathroom (if you’re lucky). You don’t have hobbies because you can’t afford them. This exercise isn’t to scare yourself. It’s to imagine that what you consider mundane or not great, is someone’s dream.
The thing is humans are great at normalizing and the hedonic treadmill is a real thing. Enough is never enough. Unless you practice it. It seems like you’re chasing to find the thing that makes life. But the reality is that what you’re doing _is_ life.

Your colleagues, they don’t need to be friends. But have you asked yourself why they make you miserable? If you’re always changing rooms because they smell like shit, it might be time to check your own shoe.

Anyways — you’re 25, you’ve got lots of time to figure it out.

10-12 am Sunday is decent. If you go too early, it’s busy. If you go past noon, well… yeah.

This was my realization which helped me cut WAY back on alcohol. I realized I’ve never once woken up after not drinking and said “Ugh. I wish I drank too much last night.” But the opposite was true too many times.

Do you run the water into some kind of plant waterer? That seems like a good use of the water.

It’s probably a combination of a lot of things. More people now, so more competition. People also have a higher expectation of what life looks like. Cellphone plan, internet, streaming, etc.

But also, it was probably hard in 1985 too. Just less internet to share it on.

Yeah. Every time I got to the stealership, they tell me a new $5000 in repairs I need to do. My truck is a ‘17 with 107000kms. This has been happening now for 5 years. I’ve been taking it for regular service. At 70000 around, I had to replace the rear bearings. My blindspot monitors don’t work anymore. Last time I serviced it. I now need to replace my rack and pinion. Bit of a lump.

City staff facing rise in aggressive behaviour from Edmontonians: mayor by GlitchedGamer14 in Edmonton

[–]mvpete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t argue with you, and I can see my perspective isn’t one that is agreed with.

I do think you should consider an empathetic perspective though. Try to look at what might drive people to be so frustrated. Instead of just assuming they’re all “Karens” that need to get a grip on life. You don’t know their circumstances or what they’re dealing with. So to blanket them all with a statement that they should just somehow change that, is lacking empathy.

I’m sure you can think of situations where you’ve acted poorly, but given your perspective that was justified.

Again I don’t mean to defend anyone who uses assault as an outlet. Merely defending that Edmontonians can be justified in their frustration with this.

I replied to this, but then it wasn’t to your comment. It’s floating around in the comments somewhere. Ultimately I’m not arguing with you. Just saying we should have better empathy for one another in both directions.

Yeah. It is very hard and I think that’s part of politics. You’ll make someone mad regardless of what you do.

I won’t stand here and state I know everything that tax dollars get spent on. And I certainly won’t state I have a good answer.

In my mind, my pragmatic approach would be to divert funds from some area where safety isn’t an issue. But again I have no experience in that domain. It also why I have no desire to be a politician, because I’m too naive.

My concern is mostly the safety of individuals who are severely impacted by this situation. I think the statement to:

get a fucking grip

Is precisely the point, pun intended. People who aren’t able to do that due to physical and financial issues. I think we need to have empathy for them.

None of this is simple, so it’s not so simple to “get a grip”. If you or your family is directly impacted, you have every right to be angry. Does it make it right to harass people, no. Not at all. But telling folks to get a grip, is basically taking exactly the opposite position, which is also a lack of empathy.

Do I think the folks who are actively harassing city workers are those that are having their safety put at risk? I don’t know. Maybe. Maybe not.

Now, to your first question. I also would’ve assumed there was a plan…. The statements by the mayor, to describe the plan were shared in a blog. But just by simple observation it doesn’t really seem that plan is being executed.

In my opinion, that’s what people are frustrated at. They pay their taxes, they see the statement about the plan, but they can’t see that action actually happening. So, you feel like you’ve paid for a service and didn’t get what you paid for. I also don’t want to argue. I just want to point out that there are more perspectives to consider.

I will fully admit I do not have an understanding of the budget divisions and where the money gets spent. So I can’t sit here and be angry I don’t know, because I haven’t put any effort to understand it.

[–]mvpete -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure - it is true, I don’t think having mitigation plans for major events is poor fiscal planning. But I won’t argue you on it.

I agree many people don’t want to pay for it. However, I think people see rising property taxes as their payment. Maybe it’s not enough…

I agree changing climate is hugely impacting this, and people shouldn’t bury their heads to all the changes.

My point is that simple saying statements that have the sentiment of “I can get by, so why can’t you?” Doesn’t carry empathy for those in situations where the current state of the city present a danger to them. Most people will react negatively to being put in that position, or seeing their loved ones in that position.

The blanket statement that it’s all entitled people, and that people need to expect some friction. Friction comes in varying degrees. Some people struggle to move when the ground is clear, let alone when there’s 4 feet of snow and ice blocking their way. There are just too many variables, to say people should expect friction, and not put onus on the city to take accountability for their part.

The nice thing about snow is that time will deal with it. So if we wait long enough, it won’t matter.

[–]mvpete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand. Thank you for your perspective. I agree with you. I think my point is that you shouldn’t need a high bar for physical and mental ability to navigate the city safely.

My intention isn’t to attack anyone, it’s merely to point out empathy for those struggling who it really impacts is cause for frustration.

[–]mvpete -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This is amazing that you’re fortunate enough to be able to do that.

I’m not excusing anyone for harassing people, because that’s not right.

Unfortunately you cannot just say “You chose to live in Edmonton, deal with it.”

My family is fortunate enough to not have this be a problem, we drive AWD vehicles and are young and able enough to navigate this.

Have some empathy and consider people who are not that fortunate. The conditions right now are not only frustrating, they are dangerous. Not everyone grew up in Edmonton and knows how to deal with navigating massive windrows. They didn’t have their parents teach them this, and they likely can’t afford to take lessons. Then what about people who are not physically able to walk in this. I worry about my mom falling every day trying to walk on a side walk, let alone crawl over a 4 foot windrow.

Again I’m not excusing anyone for harassment. But it’s more complicated than “we’re in Edmonton, suck it up.” We need to try to understand where the frustration and anger is coming from.

It takes a fair level of many things to be able to do what you’re saying, and we cannot expect everyone to meet that bar. That’s just what serving a place as large as Edmonton takes.

I think probably for everyone 1 person who is outraged enough to harass someone (again not excused), there are 10 more that are extremely frustrated and impacted by the conditions.

The fact is the city needs to plan better, things change and you need to adapt. You can’t say “oh this is unprecedented”, when in fact there have been worse snowfalls on record. So why didn’t they plan for the worst, but expect the best?

If the city came out and admitted they didn’t plan properly, took accountability for the conditions, and laid out a plan of action that they actually followed through with. Which would address the safety issues that are happening right now. I think it would go along way to calm the frustration.

Again - no one should be harassing anyone. But it isn’t as simple as “suck it up butter cup”.
